2 Planning The Bixby Bridge Block uses a combination of Foundation Paper Piecing and traditional piecing. Paper piecing was selected for this block to help achieve repeated, crisp, thin piecing and nonstandard angles. Paper piecing is done in numerical order from the printed side of the foundation, and the fabric is placed on the unprinted side of the foundation. For beginners, detailed paper piecing instructions may be found online on many blogs and YouTube. Each quilter has a different preference on the size of fabric piece relative to the size of the paper pieced section. This pattern calls for slightly generous fabric sizes to accommodate all skill levels. The Bixby Bridge Block pattern contains the templates and instructions to create a 12" finished (12 ½" unfinished) block. The templates include a ¼" seam allowance. Paper Piecing Tips 1. Reduce stitch length to Leave paper on until the block is sewn together as this will help stabilize any bias edges created during piecing. 3. When printing the templates, make sure to select actual size or 100% scaling in the printing options. After the templates are printed, check the inch scale is correct. 3 General Pattern Notes 1. Sew all traditionally pieced seams with a scant ¼" seam allowance. 2. Press seams open to reduce bulk unless otherwise specified. I suggest using a stitch length of 2.0 when pressing seams open. 3. Paper Piecing Tips are on Page The coloration used in the pattern is as follows: a. Bridge = White b. Background = Black c. 4 Piecing Instructions Step 1 Print out templates on Pages 5 and 6, and check that the inch scale is correct after printing. Step 2 Paper piece sections A through G using the Bridge and Background fabric pieces labeled with the corresponding letter and numbers. Step 3 Trim sections A through G to the outer dotted lines. Step 4 Arrange and sew together the Base of the Bridge by combining sections A, B, C, D, and E in alphabetical order. Press seams open. The assembled unit should measure 5 ½" x 12 ½". Step 5 Arrange and sew together the Bridge Rails by combining sections F and G in alphabetical order. Press seams open. The assembled unit should measure 1 ½" x 12 ½". Step 6 Assemble the Bixby Bridge Block by sewing (top to bottom) the Sky 2 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle, Bridge 1" x 12 ½" rectangle, Bridge Rails 1 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle, Bridge 1 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle, Base of Bridge 5 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle, Sand 1 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle, and Water 2" x 12 ½" rectangle. Press seams open or away from paper pieced units. The Bixby Bridge Block should measure 12 ½" x 12 ½". Remove foundation paper and enjoy! Congratulations! You have completed a Bixby Bridge Block!
