1 Fair Isles Winter Block 12 Specter Star 12 x 12 (12-1/2 unfinished) Foundation Pieced Pattern by Morning Glory Designs Cutting List: This block is foundation pieced. The patches in the cutting list have larger than normal seam allowance added around all pieces to allow for foundation piecing. Label all pieces with the letter shown. From white on white print: Cut 4 squares 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 (A) Cut 4 rectangles 1-1/2 x 6-1/2 (B) Cut 4 rectangles 1-1/2 x 6 (D) Cut 4 rectangles 1-1/2 x 4-1/2 (J) Cut 4 rectangles 1-1/2 x 4 (L) Cut 1 square 4-1/4 4-1/4 (O) From medium blue batik: J Cut 2 squares 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 ; cut on both diagonals to make 8 medium blue triangles (C) Cut 8 rectangles 2 x 4 (G, I) Cut 1 applique template B star From dark blue batik: Cut 2 squares 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 ; cut on both diagonals to make 6 dark blue triangles (E, F, N) Cut 4 squares 2 x 2 (H) Cut 1 square 4 x 4 ; cut once on the diagonal to make 2 triangles (K) Cut 4 squares 3 x 3 (P) Cut 4 applique template A stars, and 1 applique template C star Instructions: Print 1 copy of the 4-page foundation pattern on light-weight paper, velum, or newsprint. Remember that foundation patterns are reversed! So the printed side of the pattern will be the back of the block. Piece all similar foundations at one time, chain piecing using the pre-cut patches. When all sections are pieced, trim the foundation on the outer (light) cutting lines. You should have a full 1/4 seam allowance on all sides from the inner (dark) sewing lines. Begin by piecing the four large outer triangle sections, A, B, C, and D. Press each section and trim on the outer lines. (Fig. 1) Next, piece the two corner units made up of three sections each. Corner Unit 1: G, H, Q and Corner Unit 2: F, K, P. (Fig. 2) Fig. 2 Section A Fig. 1 Section H Join sections G and H matching seams. Press the seam open and remove the paper from the seam allowance. Leave the remaining paper in the block. Sew section Q to sections GH matching corners. Press the seam open and remove paper from the seam allowance. Section Q Section G Repeat steps 10 and 11 with the Corner Unit 2 sections (F, K, and P). Piece the two corner units made up of four sections each. Sew Section N to IJ matching corners. Press the seam toward N and remove paper from the seam allowance. Sew section R to IJN matching corners. 3 Finally piece center section E. Press and trim. (Fig. 4) Arrange the completed corner units 3 and 4, and side triangles A, B, C and D as in the illustration below. (Fig. 5) Sew pieced triangle section A to the side of corner unit 1. Sew pieced triangle section B to the other side of corner unit 1. Press seams open and remove paper from the seam allowances. Repeat step 17 with pieced triangle sections C and D, and corner unit 2. Fig. 4 Section E With section E oriented as shown in Fig 5, sew corner unit 3 to the top of section E. Sew corner unit 4 to the bottom of section E. Press seams open and remove the paper from the seam allowances. Join the A1B corner to the center unit. Join C2D corner to the opposite side of the center section. Press seams open and remove all the paper from the back of the block. 4 Trace each of the star applique templates onto the paper side of your fusible web. Cut out around each star. Fuse traced stars onto the wrong side of the selected fabrics. Cut out stars on the traced lines. Remove the paper from the back of each star. Fuse the large light blue star onto the white center patch of the block. Fuse the small dark blue star in the center of the light blue star. Fuse the four remaining stars in each of the white corner squares. Pin stabilizer to the back of the block. Machine stitch the edges of each star with a blanket stitch or satin stitch and matching thread. Remove the stabilizer and press the finished block. Block should measure 12-1/2 square.
