Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store. You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery. 4 SUNSHINE & DAISIES What You Will Need 2.2m (2 3/8 yards) of yellow small floral print fabric for the borders and the binding 1.4m (1 1/2 yards) of plain light cream fabric for the Rail Fence blocks, appliqué blocks, borders and appliqué 60cm (3/4 yard) of plain blue fabric for the Nine Patch blocks, border and appliqué 55cm (3/4 yard) of plain yellow fabric for the Rail Fence blocks and applique 50cm (5/8 yard) of light cream small floral print fabric for the Nine Patch blocks 40cm (1/2 yard) of plain red fabric for the Nine Patch blocks, border and appliqué One fat eighth of red small floral print fabric for the applique 10in square of plain dark yellow fabric for the applique Eight small blue buttons for the eyes of the birds Lightweight fusible webbing Tip Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method Supplement the fabrics in A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 70 1/2in square the requirements list with 3.6m (4 yards) of coordinating backing fabric fabrics from your stash Applique mat or Teflon sheet (optional, but highly recommended) to add visual General sewing supplies interest to your quilt. Cutting Instructions 1. From the yellow small floral print fabric, cut: (7) strips, 7 1/2in x WOF for the final border. (12) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. (5) strips are for the first border and (7) strips are for the binding. 2. From the plain light cream fabric, cut: (9) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (68) 2 1/2in squares for the Nine Patch blocks and second border; and (24) 2 1/2in x 6 1/2in rectangles for the Rail Fence blocks. (2) strips, 6 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (12) 6 1/2in squares for the applique blocks. 3. From the plain blue fabric, cut: (7) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (112) 2 1/2in squares for the Nine Patch blocks and second border. 4. From the plain yellow fabric, cut: (2) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (12) 2 1/2in x 6 1/2in rectangles for the Rail Fence blocks. 5. From the light cream small floral print fabric, cut: (6) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (92) 2 1/2in squares for the Nine Patch blocks. 6. From the plain red fabric, cut: (4) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (49) 2 1/2in squares for the Nine Patch blocks and second border. 7. From the backing fabric cut two pieces approximately 70 1/2in long. Remove the selvedges. How to Make the Blue Nine Patch Blocks 1. You will need (4) 2 1/2in plain blue squares, (4) 2 1/2in light cream floral print squares and (1) 2 1/2in plain red square for each block. 2. Sew a blue square to either side of a cream floral square. Press the seams towards the blue squares. Repeat to make two. 3. Sew a cream floral square to either side of a red square. Press the seams towards the red square. This is the centre row. 4. Pin and then sew the three rows together, carefully matching the seams, to complete the block. Press well. Repeat to make a total of (21) Blue Nine Patch blocks. Diagram 1

5 How to Make the Corner Nine Patch Blocks 5. You will need (5) 2 1/2in plain light cream squares, (2) 2 1/2in light cream floral squares, (1) 2 1/2in plain blue square, and (1) 2 1/2in plain red square. 6. Use the colour photograph and Diagram 2 as a guide to assemble each Corner Nine Patch block. Sew a plain light cream square to either side of a cream floral square. Press the seam inwards. This is the top row of the Nine Patch block. 7. Sew a cream floral square to one side of the red square, then sew a plain cream square to the opposite side of the red square. Press the seams outwards. This is the middle row of the Nine Patch block. 8. Sew two plain cream squares together, then sew a blue square to the right-hand side. Press the seams inwards. This is the bottom row of the Nine Patch block. 9. Pin and then sew the three rows together, carefully matching the seams, to complete the block. Press well. Repeat to make a total of (4) corner blocks. Diagram 2 How to Make the Rail Fence Blocks 10. You will need (2) 2 1/2in x 6 1/2in plain light cream rectangles and (1) 2 1/2in x 6 1/2in plain yellow rectangle for each block. 11. Pin and then sew a cream rectangle to either side of the yellow rectangle, sewing them together along the long edges. Press the seams towards the yellow fabric. Repeat to make a total of (12) Rail Fence blocks. Diagram 3 How to Make the Flower Blocks 12. Trace the applique shapes from the template sheets onto the paper side of the fusible webbing using a sharp pencil. Leave approximately 1/2in between each shape. You will need to trace (12) large flowers and their centres, (8) bird shapes, and (4) small flowers and their centres. Cut the shapes out roughly 1/4in outside the traced lines. Set the birds and small flower shapes aside. 13. Fuse the large flower shapes, and their centres, to the fabrics you have chosen for the applique following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut them out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. 14. Remove the backing paper from the flowers, and centre them on the 6 1/2in plain light cream squares. When you are happy with the position of the flowers, fuse them to the background blocks. 15. Blanket stitch by machine, or by hand, around the raw edges of the applique shapes using matching thread. How to Put the Quilt Together 16. The quilt is made up of seven rows, each with seven blocks. Use the colour photograph and Diagram 4 as a guide to layout out all of the blocks on a flat surface. When you are happy with the colour placement of the blocks, pin and then sew the blocks into rows making sure that the seams in each adjoining row are pressed in opposite directions. This will allow the seams in each row to butt together.

17. Pin and then sew the rows together carefully matching the seams. Press well. The quilt will measure approximately 42 1/2in x 42 1/2in before borders. Diagram 4 18.

Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut two strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the top and bottom edges of the quilt. Press the seams outwards towards the border.

6 17. Pin and then sew the rows together carefully matching the seams. Press well. The quilt will measure approximately 42 1/2in x 42 1/2in before borders. Diagram Sew (5) 2 1/2in yellow floral strips together at the short ends using 45-degree seams. Trim the seams and press them open. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut two strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the top and bottom edges of the quilt. Press the seams outwards towards the border. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut two strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the left and right-hand edges of the quilt. Press the seams outwards towards the border. 19. Sew (6) blue, (6) red and (11) plain cream 2 1/2in squares together to make one long strip. Start the border with a blue square and alternate the colours blue, cream, red, cream across the strip; end with a red square. Press the seams towards the blue and red squares. Repeat to make a second border strip. 20. Pin and then sew one of the border strips to the top edge of the quilt. Ensure the border begins with a blue square, use the photograph as a guide. Press the seams outwards towards the border. Pin and then sew the remaining border strip to the bottom edge of the quilt. Ensure the border begins, at the left-hand side of the quilt, with a red square. Press the seams outwards towards the border. Adjust the length of the borders to fit the quilt by stitching random seams wider or narrower. 21. Sew (6) blue, (6) red and (13) plain cream 2 1/2in squares together in the same way to make two side borders. Start with a cream square and alternate the colours cream, blue, cream red across the strip; end with a cream square. 22. Pin and then sew one of the border strips to the left-hand edge of the quilt. Ensure the border is placed so the colour pattern continues around the quilt top. Press the seams outwards towards the border. Pin and then sew the remaining border strip to the right-hand edge of the quilt in the same way. 23. Sew the (7) 7 1/2in yellow floral strips together at the short ends using 45-degree seams. Trim the seams and press them open. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut two strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the top and bottom edges of the quilt. Press the seams outwards towards the border. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut two strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the left and right-hand edges of the quilt. Press the seams outwards towards the border. 24. Fuse the birds and small flower shapes to the fabrics you have chosen, then remove the backing paper. Use the colour photograph as a guide to centre and fuse the appliqué shapes to the borders. Remember not to position the birds too close to the outside raw edge of the border, otherwise the legs of the birds will get caught up in the binding. I would recommend placing them approximately 3/4in from the raw edge of the quilt Blanket stitch by machine, or by hand, around the raw edges of the applique shapes using matching thread. Sew the small blue buttons to the birds for eyes. 25. Sew the two 70 1/2in lengths of backing fabric together along the long edges. Press the seam open. Layer the backing, wadding (batting) and quilt top, then baste them together using your favourite method. Start quilting from the centre and work your way out to the edges until finished. 26. Sew the (7) 2 1/2in yellow floral binding strips together using diagonal seams. Trim the seams and press them open. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing. Press well. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt using a 1/4in seam, then hand-stitch the binding to the back of the quilt. Label and date your quilt to finish.

Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or cropping. Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.
