Lay out, fuse and appliqué owl pieces, on each of the nine white 6½" squares, using the following block images as a reference. 8 Block eight Cow: 1 white 6½" square, 1 -white owl body, 2 white 1⅜" circles (eyes), 4 very dark brown 1⅜" circles (cow spots), 2 very dark brown ½" circles (eyes), 2 dark pink ½" circles (udders). Block nine Squirrel: 1 white 6½" square, 1 light brown owl body, 11 golden brown wings (ears, arms, tail), 6 dark brown beaks (nose, feet, acorn cap), 3 medium brown beaks (acorn nut). 9 2. Using the baby quilt diagram for color placement, pin and sew a 2" x 6½" strip to both the left and right side of the appliquéd block. Press seams toward the fabric strips. 3. Repeat for remaining eight blocks. 4. Using the baby quilt diagram for color placement, pin and sew a 2" square on both the left and right side of a 2" x 6½" strip. Press seams toward the fabric strip. Make a total of 18 units. 5. Using the baby quilt diagram for color placement, pin and sew a strip/square unit to both the top and bottom of the appliquéd block. Press seams toward the fabric strips. 6. Repeat for remaining eight blocks. 7. Using the baby quilt diagram as a reference, lay out four 2½" x 9½" strips and three appliqué blocks in a row. 8. Pin and sew row. Press seams toward the added fabric strips. 9. Repeat for two additional appliqué block rows. 10. Using the baby quilt diagram for color placement, lay out four 2½" squares and three 2½" x 9½" strips in a row. 11. Pin and sew row. Press seams toward the fabric strips. 12. 10 13. Using the baby quilt diagram as a reference, lay out four sashing row units and three appliqué block row units. 14. Pin and sew seven rows. Press seams toward added rows. 15. Pin and sew bright green 3½" x 36½" border strips to the left and the right side of the baby quilt unit. Press seams toward border strips. 16. Pin and sew one white 3½" square to each end of the top and bottom bright green 3½" x 36½" border strips. Press seams toward the border strip. 17. Fan-fold 81/2" wide and die-cut 8 C/D/E strips using the 11/2" strip cutter. From green 1930s reproduction print: Cut 3 (7" by fabric width) strips. Fan-fold 81/2" wide and die-cut 12 strips using the 11/2" strip cutter. Subcut 2 each 11/2" x 401/2" H and 11/2" x 361/2" I borders, from 4 of the strips. Set aside remaining strips for C/D/E strip sets. Additional Cutting Instructions TIP: Use GO! Strip Cutter die 21/4" to cut binding. From remaining green 1930s reproduction print yardage: Cut 5 (21/4" by fabric width) strips for binding. Completing the Blocks 1. To make one block background, sew four A and two B strips together with B strips on the top and bottom (Figure 1); press seams in same direction. Trim background to 81/2" wide, making overall measurement 81/2" x 8 1 /2" B A Figure /2" 101/2" referring again to Figure 1. Repeat to make nine block backgrounds. 2. Refer to block drawings to arrange Sunbonnet Sue appliqué pieces as shown, placing the appliqué between the B strips. Note: Green Sunbonnet Sue faces to the right and pink Sunbonnet Sue faces to the left. 3. Remove paper backing and fuse appliqué pieces in place following manufacturer s instructions. Hand- or machine blanket-stitch around each appliqué piece using black thread. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make five pink and four green Sunbonnet Sue blocks. Set blocks aside. Completing the Quilt 1. Stitch one each pink and green C/D/E strip together lengthwise to make one strip set. Repeat to make eight strip sets. 2. Subcut the strip sets into 12 each 21/2" x 101/2" C and 21/2" x 81/2" D sashing strips and 32 (21/2" x 11/2") E rectangles referring to Figure 2. Figure 2 C Cut /2" D Cut 12 E Cut /2" 1 1 /2" 3. Stitch two E rectangles together, with opposite fabrics matching, to make a cornerstone (Figure 3). Make a total of 16 (21/2") cornerstones. 15 4. Stitch four cornerstones and three D sashing strips 8. Stitch H to opposite sides and I to top and bottom of quilt referring again to the Assembly Diagram; press seams toward borders. Sashing Row Make 4 9. Stitch two sets of 21 J squares randomly together to make two pieced side borders; press seams in one direction. Stitch borders to opposite sides of quilt; press seams toward H. together referring to Figure 4 for color orientation. Repeat to make four sashing rows. D Figure 4 5. Stitch blocks between C sashing strips to make block rows as shown in Figure Stitch two sets of 20 J squares randomly together to make two pieced top and bottom borders; press seams in one direction. 17 2. Pin and sew two tumbler shapes right sides together aligning the notched corners. The sewn shapes should form straight even edges. Adjust your seam allowance if needed. 3. Pin and sew 11 more tumbler shapes to complete first row. Press seams in one direction. Label Row Pin, sew and label 12 more rows of 13 tumbler shapes following diagram. Press seams in alternating directions for each row. 5. Pin and sew rows together. 6. Press seams toward bottom of quilt. Quilting & Finishing 1. Layer batting between quilt top and backing. 2. Pin or baste layers together. 3. Quilt as desired. 4. Mark a line along the sides of the quilt using quilt diagram as a guide (dotted line). Trim on marked line. 5. Add binding, mitering corners.
