2 Bunny Doodle Pad great for journaling or child s drawing tablet!! Materials Needed: 1/2 yd print inside fabric of cover and binding of inner pockets 1/3 yd. coordinating print outer fabric of cover 1/4 yd. print binding & hat appliqué 6 X 6 print dress, hatband and nose 3 x 3 print flower 3 X 5 print collar 1/2 yd. fusible bonding 1/2 yd batting will be used for bunny appliqué as well as batting for the cover 2 ¼ buttons dress 1 1 button flower 2 piece of Velcro Instant Coffee coffee stain the batting for bunny appliqué Powder blush cheeks Black fine tip permanent marker eyes Thread to match fabrics Black thread whiskers, hair & mouth 6 X 9 ½ notebook Cutting Instructions: From your ½ yd. print cut a 2 ¼ strip (inner pocket binding) and a 11 ½ X 30 piece (inner cover) From your 1/3 yd. coordinating print cut an 11 ½ X 30 piece (outer cover) From your ¼ yd. print cut 2 2 ½ X wof strips binding (will also be used for appliqué) Use ¼ seams throughout Wof = width of fabric 1. Doodle Pad Cover: Cut a piece of batting 12 X 31. Sandwich the batting inside the two 11 ½ X 30 pieces you previously cut, making sure that the right sides are out. You can either hand or machine-quilt these pieces, I have chosen to machine stipple the 3 layers together. This is so much fun as it allows you to be as creative as you like. Once you have this done, cut a 2 ½ X 10 ½ strip, a 4 ½ X 10 ½ strip (these will be used as the inside pocket and band to hold the notebook) and the cover piece 10 1/2 X 21 1/2. 2. Appliqué pieces: Cut a piece from your batting 5 X 20. This will be used for the bunny appliqué. In order to make the batting for the bunny look older, I have coffee stained the piece before cutting the appropriate pieces out. In a small glass or spray bottle, mix 1 or 2 tablespoon of instant coffee with a small amount of water until dissolved. Paint or spray this mixture onto the batting and let dry. Draw your appliqué pieces onto the smooth side of your fusible bonding. Iron to the appropriate fabrics and cut out. Preassemble appliqué by using a Teflon sheet. Lay your finished drawing on your ironing surface and lay the Teflon sheet over the top of your drawing. Start laying your pieces down, using the drawing as your guide. Your dashed lines will indicate where something overlaps. Iron your pieces together. Using a disappearing quilter s pen, mark your inner stitching lines on the appliqué using your drawings as your guide. Peel the appliqué off of the Teflon sheet and position onto one of the ends of the cover iron in place. Since you are appliquéing through the three thicknesses of the cover, you will not need to use a

3 stabilizer. Appliqué your pieces down using your favorite stitches. I like to use the machine satin and blanket stitches, you can get as creative as you wish. If you chose not to machine stitch the appliqué, you can do a primitive whipstitch around the pieces. Make sure to stop stitching the bunnies ears ½ from the edge so you can attach your binding. 3. Inside Pocket piece & strip: Take your 2¼ strip that you cut earlier for binding and press in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Sew a strip to one 10½ edge of the 4½ pocket piece and both edges of the 2½ strip. Press binding to the backside and either hand or machine stitch in place. Lay your journal cover right side down with appliqué on the right side. Place the pocket piece on the left end of the cover, pin in place. Measure 5 to the right of this piece and pin the 2½ strip in place. These will both get sewn into the binding. 4. Continuous Double-fold binding: Take the 2 2½ binding strips and position and pin the strips perpendicular to one another with the raw edges aligned and the right sides together, stitch them together with a diagonal seam as shown in illus. #1. Trim seams to ¼ and press flat. With wrong side inside, fold the strip in half lengthwise and press flat. Begin at the 10½ end of the cover, on the right side and place the binding strip along the raw edge of the cover as shown in illus. #2. Make sure you have a little extra binding to stitch your final seam. Start stitching 1 from the first corner using your ¼ seam until you get ¼ from the corner as shown in illus. #3. Backstitch. Remove the piece from the sewing machine. Fold the binding strip upward, creating a diagonal fold, and finger-press as shown in illus. #4. Holding the diagonal fold in place with your finger, bring the binding strip down in line with the next edge as shown in illus. #5. Make a horizontal fold that aligns with the strap edge. Start sewing again at the top of the horizontal fold, stitching through all layers. Sew around your project, turning each corner as you have just been instructed. When you get to the final corner of the piece, stitch the corner and then 1 of the bottom edge. Unfold ending binding and smooth along edge of cover. Lay the creased end of the beginning binding over the ending binding and trace the diagonal onto the bottom layer as shown in illus. #6. With right sides together, align the newly marked line on the ending binding with the creased line in the beginning binding. Pin in place and stitch, trim seam to ¼ and press seam flat as shown in illus. #7. Refold the remaining binding and realign the two raw edges with the edge of the cover and stitch in place. Press and turn the binding over the edge of the piece to the backside and pin in place. Hand-stitch the binding to the backing fabric, making sure to cover the stitching line. Fold a miter in each corner as you come to it. Take a couple of stitches in each corner to secure the mitered folds. If you chose, you can stitch the binding to the backside, turning then to the front and machine topstitch the binding in place. 5. Finishing Instructions: Using your powder blush, apply a little cheek color to the bunny s cheeks. Make a dot for the eyes with your black fine tip marker. I ve used a single strand of black thread for the whiskers, mouth and the hair. You can draw them on with a disappearing quilter s pen if it makes it easier. Tie a French knot for the mouth. Hand sew the 2 ¼ buttons onto the dress of the bunny and the 1 button to the flower on the hat. To finish the ears, iron a piece of batting to the portion of the ears that are not appliquéd they should already have the fusible bonding on them. Cut excess off around the ear. Starting on the ear that is appliquéd on the cover, continue to zigzag around the ear, sewing all the way around it. Take your 2 piece of Velcro and cut into 2 1 segments. Sew one portion of it at the end of each ear, bring ears to backside, mark placement of Velcro and pin and stitch the other portion onto the cover, creating your cover closures.
