Abbreviations. WOF = width of the fabric. Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store. You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery. Assorted scraps of fabric in gold, blue, cream, red, and brown for the applique 10cm (3 1/2in) each of dark blue, gold, blue, and red print fabrics for the borders 10cm (2 1/2in) each of red, purple, gold, and blue print fabrics for the binding A scrap of fabric approx. 20cm x 70cm (8in x 27in) for the hanging sleeve (9) pairs of small buttons for the eyes (1) blue button for the bow (14) assorted buttons for the junction of the quilt blocks Quantity of lightweight fusible webbing or (1) pack of HeatnBond EZ-Print Lite Stranded embroidery thread for the facial features Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 33 1/2in square 85cm (1 yard) of 42in wide coordinating backing fabric Applique mat or Teflon sheet (optional, but highly recommended) General sewing supplies Cutting Instructions Tip Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt. A Note About Buttons I like to use buttons on my projects but they aren t suitable for children under three (3) years of age, due to them being a choking hazard. Replace buttons with applique or embroidery when you are making the quilt. 1. From each of the dark blue, gold, blue, and red print fabrics, cut: (1) strip, 3 1/2in x WOF for the borders. 2. From each of the red, purple, gold, and blue print fabrics, cut: (1) strip 2 1/2in x WOF for the binding. 3. From the backing fabric cut (1) piece measuring 33 1/2in square. Remove the selvedge. How to Make the Quilt 1. Use a pencil to trace the required applique shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing leave approx. 1/2in between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced lines. You will need to trace (9) bears, (1) bow, (1) pair of glasses, and (2) stars. 2. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the applique shapes as you go. 3. Use the template and the colour photograph as a guide to fuse the applique to the (9) assorted 7 1/2in background blocks. The bottom raw edge of the applique shapes align with the bottom raw edge of the background blocks. 4. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using hand-stitched blanket stitch and matching thread. Use a light, sharp pencil to draw the mouth on the bears, then backstitch using two strands of contrasting embroidery thread. Set aside. 5. The quilt is made up of (3) rows, each with (3) blocks. Use the photograph as a guide to lay out all of the blocks on a flat surface. When you are happy with the placement of the blocks, sew them together in horizontal rows. Press the seams in each row in opposite directions. Pin and then sew the rows together, carefully matching the seams to make the centre of the quilt. Press well. 6. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut the 3 1/2in dark blue border strip to this length. Pin and then sew it to the top of the quilt. Press the seams outwards. 7. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut the 3 1/2in gold border strip to this length. Pin and then sew it to the right-hand side of the quilt. Press as before. 8. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut the 3 1/2in blue border strip to this length. Pin and then sew it to the bottom of the quilt. Press. 9. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut the 3 1/2in red border strip to this length. Pin and then sew it to the left-hand side of the quilt. Press. 10. Use the colour photograph as a guide to fuse the (2) star shapes to the quilt. Stitch around the shapes as before.

5 11. Layer the backing, wadding (batting) and quilt top, then baste them together using your favourite method. Start quilting from the centre and work your way out to the edges. 12. Sew buttons to the bear s faces for eyes and to the bow where indicated on the pattern template, then use the photograph as a guide to sew a button to the junction of each of the applique blocks. Sew the buttons in place through all thicknesses of the quilt using strong thread. Knot securely. If you wish to add a hanging sleeve to the quilt, please do so here. See the instructions set out below. 13. Fold, then iron each of the (4) 2 1/2in binding strips in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing. 14. Sew the red binding strip to the top of the quilt using a 1/4in seam. Trim the ends of the binding even with the edges of the quilt. Turn the binding strip to the back of the quilt and stitch it down by hand. Repeat to sew the gold binding strip to the bottom of the quilt. 15. Sew the blue binding strip to the left-hand side of the quilt leave a 3/4in tail at each end. Fold the overhanging tails of binding to the back of the quilt and baste in place. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt in the usual manner and stitch it down by hand. The tails will be covered by the turned binding. Repeat to sew the purple binding to the right-hand side of the quilt, then label and date your quilt to finish. How to Make a Simple Hanging Sleeve 1. Turn over and press a narrow 1/4in hem on both short ends of the 8in x 27in rectangle of fabric. Turn over a second 1/2in hem on both ends, press, then topstitch in place using matching thread. 2. Fold the sleeve in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, with the long edges aligned. Press. Diagram 1 3. When you have finished quilting the quilt, trim the excess wadding and backing fabric from the quilt. Centre and pin the folded hanging sleeve to the back top edge of the quilt, matching raw edge to raw edge. 4. Baste the hanging sleeve in place, then follow the instructions to bind the quilt. The binding will cover the raw edge of the hanging sleeve. 5. When you have finished binding, remove the basting stitches if they are showing. Use small neat stitches and matching thread to stitch the bottom of the sleeve to the back of the quilt to create a rod-pocket. You are now ready to hang your quilt.

Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.
