Abbreviations. WOF = width of the fabric. Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local quilting store. You can also find step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an appliqué mat with all but the most simple appliqué shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. A NOTE ABOUT BUTTONS I like to use buttons on my projects but they aren t suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Replace buttons with appliqué or embroidery when you are making the project. Safety eyes are available from all good craft stores. Always follow the manufacturer s instructions. 4 EASY PET MATS Approx. size 11 1/2in x 16 1/2in What You Will Need for (1) Pet Mat Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your project. HeatnBond Iron-On Vinyl is a product made by the lovelies at Thermoweb. (1) fat quarter of fabric for the front of the pet mat. I ve used a natural linen style fabric for mine. (1) fat quarter of coordinating fabric for the backing Assorted scraps from your stash for the applique 15cm (1/4 yard) of contrasting fabric for the binding Quantity of lightweight fusible webbing. I recommend and use HeatnBond Lite. (1) roll of HeatnBond Iron-On Vinyl A piece of iron-on Pellon measuring at least 12in x 17in. Fabric glue Appliqué mat or Teflon sheet (optional, but highly recommended) General sewing supplies Cutting Instructions 1. From each the (2) fat quarters, cut: (1) 12in x 17in rectangle. (1) for the front of the pet mat and (1) for the backing. 2. From the fabric you have chosen for the binding, cut: (2) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF. How to Make the Pet Mats 1. Pre-wash your fabrics, without fabric softeners, then press. Follow the manufacturer s instructions for HeatnBond Vinyl throughout. You can find a YouTube tutorial here. Please note this is not my tutorial. All credit to Thermoweb and The Sewing Studio Fabric Superstore. 2. Choose a design to begin. Use a pencil to trace the required appliqué shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing leave approx. 1/2in between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced lines. 3. Fuse the appliqué shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the appliqué shapes as you go. 4. Use the template and the colour photograph as a guide to fuse the appliqué to the 12in x 17in background block. The bottom raw edge of the dog and cat shapes align with the bottom raw edge of the background blocks. You do not need to stitch around the shapes. 5. Adjust your iron to medium heat, no steam. 6. Peel the protective paper from the vinyl keep the paper! Place the vinyl, sticky side facing down, on the top of the pet mat. Make sure it covers the whole mat. Any small gaps around the side edges will be covered by the binding. 7. Place the protective paper (that you just removed) on top of the vinyl. Make sure it covers all of the vinyl otherwise your iron is going to be a mess. The shiny side of the paper faces down. Press to fuse the vinyl to the pet mat. Press for eight seconds and repeat until the entire surface of the pet mat is laminated. Do not let your iron touch the unprotected vinyl. 8. Turn the pet mat over, then press the back of the project for an additional four seconds. 9. Important allow cool before proceeding. 10. Sew the (2) 2 1/2in binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and press well. Set aside. 11. Trim the pet mat, wadding, and backing fabric (evenly on all sides) to measure 11 1/2in x 16 1/2in.

5 12. Fuse the iron-on Pellon to the backing fabric, then use fabric glue to adhere the front of the pet mat to the backing. Leave to dry. 13. Use your favourite method to sew the binding to the pet mat, then label and date to finish. Binding the pet mat was no different or more difficult than binding a quilt. Be very careful not to touch the iron to the vinyl, it will melt and your iron will be a mess. I used a slightly longer than usual stitch length to compensate for the vinyl. Try not to pull the pet mat through your machine and try not to bunch, crease, or scrunch the vinyl when you are sewing. If you do end up with a wrinkle, place the protective paper on top of the wrinkle and press for a few seconds only. Let cool again before proceeding. How to Print Templates from PDF Patterns All of the templates are provided at their full size. Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or cropping. Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.

Ensure you leave approx. 3/8in between the appliqué shapes and the side and top edges of the mat. This will prevent the appliqué from being sewn into the binding.
