There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store. You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery. 4 LITTLE BEARS What You Will Need 1.9m (2 1/8 yards) of bright blue-on-blue fabric for the background 30cm (3/8 yard) each of orange & white thin stripe fabric, and red & white thin stripe fabric for the sashing strips and side borders 15cm (5in) each of (4) different complimentary floral print fabrics for the sashing strips 5cm (1 1/2in) x WOF strip each of (13) assorted co-coordinating fabrics for the checked border 1.9m (2 yards) of yellow & white spot fabric for the borders, binding and applique 35cm (3/8 yard) of mottled brown fabric for the bears (1) fat eighth each of white-on-white and dark brown-on-brown print fabric for the applique 35cm (3/8 yard) in total of assorted print fabrics in orange, pink and purple for the bear s shirts 30cm (12in) square in each of (2) green print fabrics for the flowers 30cm (12in) square in each of (2) yellow print fabrics for the bees 20cm (8in) square of plain peach fabric for the bear s inner ears 25cm 1/4 yard of plain yellow fabric for the beehives 25cm (9in) square of red-on-red fabric for the door of the beehives 15cm x 25cm (5in x 10in) rectangle in each of (2) orange and (2) red/pink print fabrics for the flowers (8) pairs of small black buttons for the eyes Lightweight fusible webbing Stranded embroidery thread for the facial features Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method A piece of wadding (batting) measuring at least 74 1/2in x 76 1/2in 3.9m (4 1/4 yards) of coordinating fabric for the backing General sewing supplies TIP Supplement the fabrics in the requirements list with fabrics from your stash to add visual interest to your quilt. A Note About Buttons I like to use buttons on my projects but they aren t suitable for children under three (3) years of age, due to them being a choking hazard. Replace buttons with applique or embroidery when you are making the quilt. Cutting Instructions 1. From the blue-on-blue fabric cut: (5) strips, 14 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut (9) 14 1/2in x 18 1/2 rectangles for applique blocks. 2. From the orange & white thin stripe fabric cut: (7) strips, 1 1/2in x WOF for the sashing. 3. From the raspberry red & white thin stripe fabric cut: (7) strips, 1 1/2in x WOF for the sashing. 4. From each of the four different floral print fabrics cut: (2) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF from each fabric for the sashing. 5. From each of the 13 different complimentary print fabrics cut: (1) strip, 1 1/2in x WOF. Crosscut two 16in strips from each fabric for the checked border. 6. From the yellow & white spot fabric cut: (6) strips, 1 1/2in x WOF for the border. (7) strips, 4 1/2in x WOF for the border. (8) strips, 2 1/2in x WOF for the binding. Use the remaining fabric for the beehive applique. 7. From the backing fabric cut (2) pieces approximately 76 1/2in long. Remove the selvedge. How to Make the Quilt 1. Pin and then sew (3) 14 1/2in x 18 1/2in blue-on-blue background blocks together along the short edges. Press the seams to one side. Repeat to make (3) separate rows. See Diagram 1.

5 2. Trace the applique shapes from the template pages onto the paper side of the fusible webbing using a sharp pencil; leave approx. 1/2in between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced lines. You will need to trace and cut out (8) bears, (8) flowers and their centres, (6) long flower stems, (2) short flower stems, (16) leaves, (4) small beehives, (1) large beehive, (8) bee template A, and (8) bee template B. 3. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the applique shapes as you go. 4. Use the template and the colour photograph as a guide to fuse the applique to each row, ensuring the bottom raw edges of the applique shapes are aligned with the bottom raw edges of the background fabric. I recommend using an applique mat with all but the simplest of shapes. Remember not to place the applique too close to the side and top edges of the rows, otherwise the shapes will get caught up in the seams. 5. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using handstitched blanket stitch and two strands of matching embroidery thread. Use a light, sharp pencil to draw the features on the bears and bees (including the bee trails), then backstitch using two strands of contrasting thread. Press well. 6. Sew the (7) 1 1/2in orange & white stripe strips together end to end using straight seams to preserve the striped pattern. Press the seams open. Repeat to sew the (7) red & white strips together. Cut (4) 54 1/2in strips from each coloured strip for the sashing. Set the remaining fabric aside. 7. Sew the (8) assorted 2 1/2in floral print strips together end to end, in matching pairs, using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. Cut a 54 1/2in strip from each strip. 8. Use the photograph and Diagram 1 as a guide to layout the (3) appliqued rows and the assorted sashing strips on a flat surface. When you are happy with the lay out, pin and then sew them together. Press the seams towards the sashing strips. 9. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut the remaining orange & white stripe, and red & white stripe strips to this length. Pin and then sew the orange strip to the left-hand side of the quilt, and the red strip to the right-hand side of the quilt. Press the seams towards the borders. Diagram 1 The finished rows should each measure 54 1/2in wide. * applique shapes not shown in diagram. It s a good idea to measure the width of your rows in case your measurements differ from mine. Adjust the width of the sashing strips if necessary. 10. Sew the (6) 1 1/2in yellow & white spot strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. 11. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press the seams towards the border. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the sides of the quilt. Press the seams outwards.

6 12. Sew (13) 1 1/2in x 16in strips together along the long edges to make a striped fabric unit. Repeat to make (2). Square the ends and cut each fabric unit down the length so that you have a total of (19) strips, each measuring approx. 1 1/2in x 13 1/2in. Diagram Sew (4) strips together end to end to make one long strip. Repeat to make (4), then set aside. Diagram Unpick one of the remaining (short) strips to make (2) smaller strips, each with (6) squares. Sew one to the end of each of (2) border strips. See Diagram 5. Each strip should measure approx. 58 1/2in long. Pin and then sew the strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press the seams towards the yellow border. Diagram Unpick the (2) remaining (short) strips to make (2) smaller strips, each with (10) squares. Sew one to the end of each of the (2) remaining border strips. See Diagram 6. Each strip should measure approx. 62 1/2in long. Pin and then sew the strips to the sides of the quilt. Press the seams towards the yellow border. Diagram 6 + Adjust the length of the sashing strips, if necessary, by unpicking some of the seams and resewing them with a wider or narrower seam allowance. 16. Sew the (7) 4 1/2in yellow & white spot strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. 17. Measure the width of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press the seams towards the border. Measure the length of the quilt through the centre and cut (2) strips to this length. Pin and then sew them to the sides of the quilt. Press the seams towards the border. 18. Sew the (2) pieces of backing fabric together along the long edges, then trim to make a piece measuring approx. 74 1/2in x 76 1/2in. 19. Layer the backing, wadding (batting) and quilt top, then baste them together using your favourite method. Start quilting from the centre and work your way out to the edges until finished. 20. Sew buttons to the bear s faces for eyes where indicated on the pattern template. Sew the buttons in place through all thicknesses of the quilt using strong thread. Knot securely. 21. Sew the (8) yellow binding strips together using diagonal seams. Trim the seams to 1/4in and press them open. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and press well. Bind, label, then date your quilt to finish.

Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or cropping. Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.
