2 Introduction: The instructions included in this pattern are for the two techniques I use when making my mug rugs. I like to use the fusible fleece as the inner layer for mine, so that is the technique I m sharing with you. If you prefer to use another product for your inner layer, or a technique that you are more used to, the appliques will work just as well as long as you size your finished project to 6 1/2 by 8 inches. Supplies: Small scraps of fabric for appliques 1/8 yard of light weight paper backed fusible webbing 6 1/2 x 8 inch piece of fabric for background if using hand applique method, it s best to start with a bigger top piece, then cut down later 6 1/2 x 8 inch piece of fusible fleece 7 1/2 x 9 inch piece of fabric for back 2 3/4 x 44 strip of fabric for binding Fray-check (optional: to seal the stitches on the back if using machine applique) Thread to match fabrics (plus thread to match applique fabrics if using machine applique method) Embroidery floss to match or contrast with applique fabrics if you will be using hand applique method Embellishment supplies of your choice (examples: floss, buttons, beads, ribbon, fabric paint, etc) Refer to pattern page for additional information, tips, and embellishment & embroidery ideas. If you will be using glue for attaching embellishments such as wiggle eyes, pom-poms, or bows, be sure to use a good quality and washable fabric glue. I like to use Fabri-tac by Beacon. General supplies: Scissors, pins, sewing and embroidery needles, embroidery hoop (if using hand applique method), paper & pencil, fabric marking pen or pencil, paper or cardstock (for printing pattern pieces), iron & ironing board, sewing machine, cutting mat with ruler & rotary cutter (optional), pressing cloth or piece of light colored, 100% cotton fabric for fusing your fleece to the top (depending on the brand you use, some fusible fleece instructions call for it). Important tips & general instructions: **Read tips and instructions thoroughly before beginning. **Iron your fabrics before starting. If you will be pre-washing your fabrics, do not use a fabric softener. It can prevent your adhesive from sticking when fusing. 100% cotton fabrics work best. **When printing out your pattern, make sure you do not shrink the document. You will want to print it out at the actual size for your pattern pieces to fit your project. You will find this setting in the window that appears when you choose print. On some computers you will want to choose NONE for the page scaling, and on other computers, you will just choose ACTUAL SIZE. You will see a one inch square on the pattern page(s). Use that as a guide to make sure your pieces have printed out at the right size. If they don t, they will not fit properly on your mug rug. **Remember to choose the pages you want to print when your print window appears so you don t waste ink. I personally like to print only my pattern pieces, then I have my laptop or e-reader close to my side to use for following instructions. PAGE 2

3 Instructions: 1. Print out the pattern pieces and cut them out. If you use cardstock, it will be so much easier to trace around them. 2. Turn your pattern pieces upside down (unless otherwise stated on the pattern) so that the ink side is facing the paperbacked fusible webbing, and trace them onto the paper side of your paperbacked fusible webbing. Do a rough cut just outside the traced line. You ll cut on the line in the next step. 3. Fuse these to the wrong side of the fabric scraps you have chosen for your applique pieces. Follow the manufacturer s instructions for the paperbacked fusible webbing you are using. Cut your applique pieces out by cutting on your traced lines. Remove your paper backing and set aside. If using the machine applique method: 1. Fuse the piece of the fusible fleece to the backside of the background fabric, following the manufacturer s directions for the fleece you are using. Mine requires the use of a damp pressing cloth. 2. Flip over so that the right side of the background fabric is facing up on your ironing surface. Arrange your appliques on the fabric (glue side down) making sure to keep them at least 3/4 inch away from each edge. Your binding will take up about 3/8 of the edges. Once you are happy with the arrangement, fuse in place following the manufacturer s instructions for your fusible webbing. You can refer to the photo or illustration for correct placement of the appliques. 3. Transfer any markings for the placement of embellishments or additional stitching at this time. I love my water soluble marker for this step. If you have no markings to transfer, it s time to stitch! 4. Machine baste around the entire piece 1/4 away from each of the edges. Embroider around your applique pieces as desired. Use any stitch you like best. 5. Now is the time to stitch on any embellishments that require stitching such as buttons, beads, etc. Any glued or painted embellishments will be done at the very end. If using the hand applique method: 1. When using the hand applique method, I find it easiest to start with a fabric bigger than the 6 1/2 x 8 inch size of background fabric required for the top. When using the embroidery hoop, it s very difficult to hand stitch the applique pieces when they are so close to the edges of the fabric. Just make sure to place your appliques within a 5 by 6 1/2 inch area. This is very important so that you will be able to leave room for the binding. I made a paper template for this so that my appliques are perfectly placed. I cut a piece of cardstock down to 6 1/2 inches by 8 inches (the exact size of the finished mug rug), then measured in 3/4 inch away from each edge. I then took an Exacto knife and cut out the center. I placed this piece on my fabric when arranging my applique pieces so they do not exceed the applique area. After I finish my stitching, I use this as a guide to cut my fabric down to size. You can refer to the photo or illustration for correct placement. Once you are happy with your arrangement of your appliques, fuse in place following manufacturer s instructions for the fusible webbing you are using. 2. Transfer any markings for the placement of embellishments or additional stitching at this time. If you have no markings to transfer, it s time to stitch! A water soluble marking pen is perfect for this. PAGE 3

4 3. Using 3 strands of embroidery floss (you will have to separate them), go around each applique piece with a blanket stitch. Refer to the pattern page for additional stitching or embellishing information and ideas. You will find some helpful illustrations on the last page of this pattern for the stitches. Iron when finished. If you used a larger piece of fabric to make stitching easier, now is the time to cut it down to the 6 1/2 by 8 inches. 4. Iron the fusible fleece to the backside of the fabric you just did your stitching on. Be sure to follow the manufacturer s instructions for the fleece you are using. If using buttons, beads, or any other embellishments that will be stitched on, you can do that now. Any embellishments that will be glued or painted on will be done at the very end. Pre-binding preparation: 1. Place the ironed backing piece with the wrong side facing up on your work surface. Center your applique and fleece piece on top. Hand baste, pin, or spray baste to secure. Using a rotary cutter or scissors, cut your backing piece to the same size as the top/fleece combination. Machine baste all the way around this piece, 1/4 inch from each edge. 2. If you want to machine quilt these layers together, you can do that. I always get best results when using free motion machine quilting, but most of the time, I don t do any quilting. This is such a small piece and fusible fleece was used for the inside. Applying the binding: 1. Fold one of the short ends of the 2 3/4 x 44 strip of fabric 1/4 to the wrong side and iron in place. Fold the entire length of fabric in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together, and iron. 1/4 folded & ironed to the wrong side wrong side of binding fabric Then fold in half lengthwise and iron 2. Beginning at the center front, along the bottom edge of the mug rug, and using the edge that you ironed in at 1/4", pin the binding to the mug rug with the raw edges of the binding even with the raw edges of the mug rug. 3. Before you do the remaining edges, you will stitch this section in place using a 3/8 seam allowance. Begin your stitching at the folded end of your binding, and stop your stitching 3/8" from the corner. I like to run a couple of back stitches at the beginning and ending of my stitching to secure seam in place. Remove project from machine and take back to your work table. Do not exceed your 3/8 seam allowance. PAGE 4

5 Miter Step #1 Stitches stopped 3/8 from edge of fabric 4. Flip your binding piece down forming a fold at a 45 degree angle. Then bring the binding back down so that the fold in your binding will be even with the raw edge at the bottom. Your raw edges of the binding will be even with the raw edges of the mug rug. 5. Secure with pins and stitch in place just as you did with the first edge stopping 3/8" from the end. Repeat these steps with remaining corners. With the remaining corners, you will also be starting your stitching 3/8 from the corner too. When you get to the end, leave an overlap of at least and inch and trim off the excess binding before stitching that final section down. Miter - Step #3 1st Fold Line Will be 2nd Fold Line when you bring the fabric back up Fold binding straight down at end of stitching, then fold back up. Miter - Step #2 Begin stitching 3/8 from fold and stitch to 3/8 from next corner, repeat steps 6. Trim off excess threads and remove basting stitches that might have been left behind or exposed. Flip the folded edges of the binding to the back and pin in place. Hand stitch binding to backing. Finishing: If you be using fabric paint or glue for any embellishments, do that now and let dry. Note: Some pieces will overlap other pieces. Refer to photo and illustrations for correct placement. PAGE 5

9 Backstitch Daisy Stitch Satin Stitch Straight Stitch Running Stitch POPULAR STITCHES Blanket Stitch Edge of fabric Make the stitches short and close together for quilting, or longer and further apart for basting. 3-Dimensional paints can take practice if you aren t use to them. Here are a few tips: 1. With the bottle upside down, shake very well. 2. Before you use the paint, tap the tip on the work surface (protected by paper or napkin) to remove any air bubbles. 3. Test your stream on a piece of paper first to make sure it s working properly. 4. It helps to start with a fresh new bottle if you aren t sure how old an open bottle is. 5. I always keep a napkin in hand and keep my tip clean. I also tap the tip several times during use to keep the paint at the tip area. 6. Take your time! Rushing along can create problems when using this paint.
