2 Apron A large-scale floral appliqué creates a lovely design for a vintage styled apron. materials 1 yard of 58 -wide handkerchief linen, high quality linen or cotton (A) ¾ yard of 44 -wide green cotton fabric (B) ¼ yard of red cotton fabric (C) Fat quarter each of green print cotton fabric & light pink cotton fabric (D & E) Thread: all-purpose & matching polyester embroidery Size 90/14 embroidery needle Stabilizer: mediumweight water-soluble tear-away & water-soluble paperrelease adhesive (See Sources. ) Appliqué scissors Rotary cutting system Floral embroidery design collection Prepare From fabric A, cut two 16B c"x37" rectangle for the skirt and skirt lining, one 11"x10" rectangle for the bib and one 11" square for the bib lining. From fabric B, cut one 6"x37" strip for the skirt border one 2B c"x11" strip for the bib border, two 4"x28" strips for the apron ties, two 4"x21" strips for the bib ties and two 2B c"x21" strips for the waistband and lining. With right sides together, align the skirt-border long edge with one apron-skirt long edge. Stitch using a B c" seam allowance, and then press the seam toward the border. Embroider Print placement templates for three appliqué floral designs. Center one design on the apron skirt, lapping the design lower edge D e" over the border. Arrange the remaining designs on the same plane, spacing the centers 12" apart (A). A cmemag.com Creative Machine Embroidery 21

3 Mark each design center onto the linen fabric. Load the designs onto the machine. Hoop a piece of paper-release adhesive stabilizer with the paper side up. Score and remove the paper from inside the hoop perimeter. Place the apron skirt over the hoop, centering one design center in the hoop; finger-press to secure. Place the hoop onto the machine. Place a piece of tear-away stabilizer under the hoop. Use the bastein-the hoop function to secure the layers, if available. Or pin the layers along the hoop perimeter. Embroider the placement stitches. Cut one fabric -C square larger Linen Care Follow a few tips for embroidering on linen and cotton to keep linens in top shape. Prewash all linens and huck cloth to prevent distortion due to shrinkage for items that will be pressed or washed after usage. Over-drying can leave linens stiff and rough. Dry on a medium or cool temperature or allow to air dry. For best results, press linens while still slightly damp. than the outline. Lightly spray the wrong side using temporary spray adhesive. Center the square right side up over the outline stitches. Embroider the tacking stitches. Remove the hoop from the machine, but don t remove the fabric from the hoop. Trim the appliqué fabric close to the stitches using appliqué scissors. Repeat the steps for the remaining design using fabrics D and E. Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop. Remove the excess stabilizer one layer at a time. Press the designs from the wrong side. Open a 1B e"x1b c" design onto the machine screen or in embroidery software. Duplicate, rotate and mirror image the design as desired to achieve five designs. Arrange the designs on the same plane with the centers 2" apart; save in the correct format under a new name. Mark the design arrangement center on the apron bib right side 1B c" from the upper edge, centering the design arrangement on the bib. Hoop a piece of paper-release stabilizer with the paper side up. Score and remove the paper from inside the hoop perimeter. Place the bib over the hoop centering the design arrangement in the hoop; finger-press to secure. Embroider the design arrangement. Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and the bib from the hoop. Carefully remove the excess stabilizer from each design just beyond the stitches. Apron Bib Use B c" seam allowances unless otherwise noted. With right sides together, align one bib border long edge with the bib upper edge; stitch, and then press seams toward the border. 22 CREATIVE MACHINE EMBROIDERY cmemag.com

4 With right sides together, align the bib and bib lining. Fold one bib tie in half lengthwise with right sides together; press. Stitch one short end and the long open edge. Trim the corners, and then turn right side out; press. Repeat to construct other bib tie. Sandwich the bib ties between the bib layers at the upper corners, B c" from the sides and aligning the raw edges; pin. Stitch the bib sides and upper edge. Trim the corners, and then turn the bib right side out; press. Apron Skirt With right sides together, align one skirt lining long edge with the apron border; stitch, and then press the seam allowances toward the border. With right sides together, align the skirt and lining upper edges, matching the border seams. Stitch the skirt sides, and then turn the skirt right side out; press. Set the machine to a long basting stitch. Stitch the skirt and lining upper edge using a B e", and then B c" seam allowance. Fold each apron tie strip in half lengthwise; press. Stitch the long open edge and one short end. Clip the corners, and then turn the ties right side out; press. With right sides together, center the skirt upper edge along one waistband long edge; pin. Adjust the gathers to leave B c" free at each waistband end. Stitch the skirt to the waistband. Press the seam toward the waistband. With right sides together, center the bib lower edge along the opposite waistband long edge; pin. Baste within the B c" seam allowance. With right sides together and aligning the raw edges, position one apron tie at each waistband end; pin or baste. Fold one waistband-lining long edge B c" toward the wrong side; press. With right sides together and aligning the raw edges, place the waistband lining over the waistband with the bib and ties sandwiched between the layers; pin. Stitch the long edge and each short edge. Clip the corners, and then turn the apron to lining side. Place the waistband-lining folded edge over the skirt seam; pin, and then edgestitch the fold. cmemag.com Creative Machine Embroidery 23

5 Tea Towels Huck cloth has a woven pattern of small squares with a distinct right and wrong side. Most commonly used for hand embroidery, it s also wonderful to use as a canvas for machine embroidery. Huck cloth is 100% cotton and becomes softer with each washing, making it the ideal towel for spotless glasses. materials Supplies listed are enough to make two towels. 1¾ yards of 15 -wide cotton huck cloth (A) Two 3 x16 rectangles of green print cotton (B) Thread: all-purpose & matching polyester embroidery Size 90/14 embroidery needle Stabilizer: mediumweight water-soluble tear-away & paper-release adhesive Heat-removable topper Rotary cutting system Ruler Floral embroidery design (approximately 1¼ x 1½ ) Construct Use B c" seam allowances unless otherwise noted. From fabric A, cut two 15"x25" rectangles. Double-fold one fabric-a rectangle short edge B e" toward the wrong side; press. Edgetitch the first fold. Fold each fabric-b strip short edge and one long edge B c" toward the wrong side; press. With right sides together, align the strip raw edge with the fabric-a rectangle raw edge; stitch, and then press open the seam. Fold the strip toward the towel right side to create a border; pin. Edgestitch the sides and upper edge. Embroider Open the small floral design onto the machine screen or in embroidery software. Duplicate, rotate and mirror the design to achieve six designs in a random arrangement; save in the correct format using a new name. Mark the design center arrangement on the towel right side 1" above the border upper edge. Hoop a piece of adhesive stabilizer. Score and remove the paper inside the hoop. Place the towel over the hoop, centering the design center mark. Float a layer of heat-removable topper over the towel in the hoop. Embroider the design arrangement. Remove the hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop. Trim any excess threads. Cut away the stabilizer and topper just beyond the embroidery. Remove any remaining stabilizer and topper following the manufacturer s instructions. Repeat to create a second tea towel. 24 CREATIVE MACHINE EMBROIDERY cmemag.com

6 Dish Towel Embellish a microfiber dishtowel with a single, centered geranium design for a quick and easy coordinating project. materials Striped microfiber towel Thread: all-purpose & matching polyester embroidery Stabilizer: mediumweight water-soluble tear-away & water-soluble paperrelease adhesive Floral embroidery design (approximately 5 x5½ ) Embroider Load the design onto the machine. Mark the embroidery design center 6" from one towel short end and centered on the towel width. Hoop a piece of adhesive stabilizer. Score and remove the paper from inside the hoop. Finger-press the towel over the hoop, centering the mark. Float a layer of heatremovable topper over the towel to prevent the pile from showing through the stitches. Place a layer of tear-away stabilizer under the hoop. Use the bastein-the-hoop function to secure the layers, if available. Or pin the stabilizer layers together outside the hoop. Embroider the design. Once the embroidery is complete, remove the excess stabilizer and topper. cmemag.com Creative Machine Embroidery 25

7 Pot Holder Metalized fleece is used as a barrier that reflects heat and cold. Used in insulated lunch boxes, oven mitts and casserole covers, it s machine washable and can be dried in the dryer. Use this fabric to make a matching potholder. materials 9 square each of 15 -wide cotton huck cloth and green print cotton (backing) ¼ yard of metalized fleece Scraps of light pink cotton Thread: all-purpose & matching polyester embroidery Stabilizer: medium-weight water-soluble tear-away & water-soluble paper-release adhesive Package of double-fold bias tape Removable fabric marker Appliqué floral embroidery design (approximately 7¼ x7¾ ) B C D 26 CREATIVE MACHINE EMBROIDERY cmemag.com

8 E Cut From the metalized fleece, cut two 9" squares. Embroider Hoop a piece of stabilizer per the apron instructions. Center the hack cloth square over the stabilizer at a 45 angle; finger-press. Embroider the design per the apron instructions. Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop. Remove the excess stabilizer. With right sides up, align the embroidered square over one metalized fleece square. Align the embroidered square and the potholder back with wrong sides together; trim the corners to match. Unfold one bias-tape long edge. With right sides together and beginning 1" from one bias tape end, align the bias tape and potholder raw edges; pin (C). Continue to pin the bias tape along the potholder perimeter, taking care not to over-stretch the bias tape at the curved corners. Beginning at the squared corner, stitch along the fold, ending 1" before the beginning point. Don t trim the excess bias tape. F G Trim Construct Trace a glass or plate along three embroidered-square corners, leaving the upper corner squared. Trim the corners (B). Place the green fabric square over the remaining metalized fleece square; pin. Draw a 1" grid on the green fabric. Stitch along the marked lines to quilt the potholder back. Fold the bias tape toward the wrong side, encasing the raw edges; pin. Beginning at the squared corner, edgestitch the binding fold from the right side (D). Trim the bias tape beginning to align with the potholder (E). Continue stitching, enclosing the bias tape beginning. Stitch the bias tape end 5" beyond the beginning (F). Trim the excess bias tape 5" from the potholder edge. Fold the tape toward the wrong side. To form the loop, fold the raw edge B e" toward the wrong side.
