Striped Blocks Step 1.) Hoop Battilizer. Place water soluble thread in the needle and embroidery bobbin thread in the bobbin and sew the pattern onto Battilizer. This diagram shows exactly what stitches for this step. 3
Striped Blocks Step 2.) Place Fabric B (white) over this section and sew the tack down stitch. Step 3) Place light gray or white embroidery thread (or color of your choice) in the needle and sew the letters. For Blocks A4, 5 and 6 and H5 and 6 you will not have this step. 4
Striped Blocks Finished stitching from Step 3. Step 4) Place Fabric A (Red) right side to Fabric B (White) and sew the seam. 5
Striped Blocks Step 5) Place water soluble thread in the needle. Flip Fabric A right side up, finger press and sew the tack down stitch. 6
Striped Blocks Step 6) Place light gray or white embroidery thread in the needle. Place Fabric A (Red) right side to Fabric B (White) and sew the seam. 7
Striped Blocks Step 7) Place water soluble thread in the needle. Flip Fabric A right side up, finger press and sew the tack down stitch. 8
Striped Blocks Step 8) Place light gray or white thread in the needle. Place Fabric B (White) right side to Fabric A (Red) and sew the seam. 9
Striped Blocks Step 9) Place water soluble thread in the needle. Flip Fabric B right side up, finger press and sew the tack down stitch. Water soluble thread can be removed by dabbing with a wet Q-tip or tossing finished quilt in the washing machine. It keeps you from ripping out basting stitches that may show. 10
Striped Blocks Step 10) Leave water soluble thread in the needle. Adhere backing fabric to back of hoop and sew the basting stitch. If your machine has an automatic thread cutter, turn it off. The back of quilt will look much nicer. The basting stitch will sew out in 2 sections to avoid the foot getting caught and flipping the fabric over. 11
Striped Blocks Step 11) Place red thread in the needle and bobbin and sew the quilting stitches. For a hand quilted look, put monofilament thread in the needle and follow the tips on Page 21 of the written instructions for the best results. How to trim your blocks depends on where your block is located in the quilt/wall hanging. Refer to written instructions for information on how to trim your blocks. 12
Lil Glory Star Block Hoop Battilizer. Place water soluble thread in the needle and white embroidery thread in the bobbin and sew the placement stitch onto Battilizer. Adhere Backing Fabric to back of hoop. Place 9 square of Fabric C (Blue) centered over placement stitch. Sew the basting stitch still using the water soluble thread. Place white embroidery thread in the needle. 13
Lil Glory Star Block Sew the stars. Make one star block. To trim the completed block, trim one side using the Trimmer By George! (grey) and three sides through all layers ¼ away from the basting stitch (yellow). See Page 30 of slideshow for trimming pictures. 14
Star Block Appliqués Step 1 - Making the Base with Cutting Needles 1) Hoop a light weight tear away stabilizer. Stitch the placement stitches with regular thread. Light Weight Tear Away Stabilizer Choose only one Step 1 method: Either Needle Cut or Needle Mark Method 15
Star Block Appliqués Step 1 - Making the Base with Cutting Needles 2) Place 3 prepared layers* of Sulky Fuse n Stitch on top of the light weight tear away stabilizer. With regular thread, stitch the tack down stitches. The products listed have been tested, and we know they work beautifully. Should you choose to use a different product that has similar qualities, please test to ensure good results! Choose only one Step 1 method: Either Needle Cut or Needle Mark Method *See Page 10 of Written Instructions 16

Star Block Appliqués Step 1 - Making the Base with Cutting Needles Choose only one Step 1 method: Either Needle Cut or Needle Mark Method 19
Star Block Appliqués Step 1 - Making the Base with a Jeans Denim Needle (Needle Mark Method) 1) Hoop a light weight tear away stabilizer. Stitch the placement stitches with regular thread. Choose only one Step 1 method: Either Needle Cut or Needle Mark Method 2) Place 3 prepared layers for 8 inch of Sulky Fuse n Stitch on top of the light weight tear away stabilizer. Stitch tack down stitches. 20
Star Block Appliqués Step 1 - Making the Base with a Jeans Denim Needle (Needle Mark Method) 3) Remove the upper thread from the machine. Disengage your upper thread sensor, if possible/necessary. If it is not possible to sew without thread, simply use thread! Stitch the star shapes. Choose only one Step 1 method: Either Needle Cut or Needle Mark Method 21
Star Block Appliqués Step 1 - Making the Base with a Jeans Denim Needle (Needle Mark Method) 4) Unhoop the stabilizer. Use an Olfa Precision Art Knife to cut out the stars. Repeat this process until you have 50 or more stars cut. Choose only one Step 1 method: Either Needle Cut or Needle Mark Method 22
Star Block Appliqués Step 2 Embroidering the Star Appliqués 1.) Hoop Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy with the release paper side up, score and remove the release paper. Turn the jump stitch cutting feature off. Place white embroidery thread in the needle, and white bobbin embroidery thread in the bobbin. Stitch the star placement stitches. 23
Star Block Appliqués Step 2 Embroidering the Star Appliqués 1. continued) Lay your hoop on a flat surface. Trim the jump stitches on the front and back. Place your prepared star cut outs inside the stitched star placements. You will need to turn the stars to get the best placement. Place the hoop back on the machine. 2.) Stitch the tack down stitches. If necessary, trim any unwanted Sulky Fuse n Stitch that may be past the tack down line. Trim the jump stitches on the top, leave the back for later. 24
Star Block Appliqués Step 2 Embroidering the Star Appliqués Remove the stars from the hoop. Trim the jump stitches. Carefully cut the stars apart. Trim the excess stabilizer about 1/8 inch away from the stars. 3.) Embroidery the stars! Don t go too far from your machine, you will need to change your bobbin once or twice, depending on the bobbin size. Place the stars in a sink of lukewarm water for about an hour, rinse, and place on a towel to air dry. After completely dry, clip any stray threads. Press from the wrong side to flatten. Your stars are now ready to be placed on the star blocks. 25
Star Block Appliqués Step 3 Creating the Old Glory Star Blocks 1.) Hoop Battilizer. Block B3 Shown Place a neutral thread in the needle, embroidery bobbin thread in the bobbin. Stitch the placement stitches. 26
Star Block Appliqués Step 3 Creating the Old Glory Star Blocks 2.) Spray the back of the blue background fabric, and the back of the block backing fabric with a temporary spray adhesive. Place the blue background fabric and the backing fabric centered over the placement stitches, right sides up. Change to water soluble thread in the needle only, stitch the tack down stitches. 27
Star Block Appliqués Step 3 Creating the Old Glory Star Blocks 3.) Continue on with the water soluble thread. Stitch the star placement stitches. Trim the jump stitches on the front and the back of the block. 28
Star Block Appliqués Step 3 Creating the Old Glory Star Blocks 4.) Spray the WRONG SIDE of the Stars with a temporary spray adhesive. Place the stars in the stitched placement areas. You may need to rotate them for the best fit. Stick the stars in place. Change to white embroidery thread in the needle and the bobbin. Stitch the Star tack down. 29
Trimming using the EmbroidaBlock Trimmer By George! See written instructions for more detailed block by block trimming information. To use the Trimmer By George!, fold back the fabric on the front of the block, exposing the Battilizer. Finger press the fabric. Place the crimped edge of the Trimmer By George! up against the basting stitch. The crimped edge will protect the fabric on the front of the block and keep it from being cut. Lay the Trimmer flat and use the straight edge to cut the Battilizer and backing fabric right up to the basting stitch. 30
Trimming using the EmbroidaBlock Trimmer By George! See written instructions for more detailed block by block trimming information. Front of Lil Glory Star Block Back of Lil Glory Star Block This shows the back of the block with only the fabric on the front of the block left. The Battilizer and the backing fabric have been cut away. Trim the fabric on the front of the block ¼ away from the basting stitch. Note: The Trimmer By George! is used only on the side of the block that is joined invisibly to another block. If the edge of the block has binding attached to it or a method of joining where you see the sashing on the front as well as the back, then you will trim ¼ away from the basting stitch through all layers. 31
Invisible Method Joining and Assembly: Star Blocks We will use the Invisible Sashing method to join the star blocks. After the blocks are joined in horizontal rows, the vertical sashing is placed on the back. Stitch star blocks into 3 rows. Sew together using ¼ seam. Outline is for star placement for later. Press seam to one side. Prepare sashing strip. Apply Quilters Basting Glue to one side of sashing strip. 32
Invisible Method Joining and Assembly: Star Blocks Heat seat with iron. Apply Quilters Basting Glue to the other side of the sashing strip. Fold down, Press with iron. Where block is joined by another block, trim sashing even with back of block. On edge of block that will have binding attached, trim sashing even with edge of block. 33
Invisible Method Joining and Assembly: Star Blocks Choose either a blanket stitch or blind hem stitch on your machine. Put your Stitch in the Ditch foot on your machine. Fold your row of blocks as seen below, guiding the blade along the folded edge of the quilt. The stitch will sew a straight line on the sashing and take an occasional bite into the folded edge. There will be no stitching showing on the front. If you do not have a Stitch in the Ditch foot you can use a foot similar to the one below. There is a split in the foot that lines up with the center needle position. Guide the center needle position right along the folded edge of the quilt. Time to stitch the sashing strips to the quilt. 34
Invisible Method Joining and Assembly: Star Blocks After the horizontal row is sashed, the star appliqués will be machine stitched in place. Use the same white embroidery, and bobbin thread used in the embroidered step. After each row is completed, join it to the next row and sash. 35
Front and Back Sashing Method Joining and Assembly: Lil Glory Prepare Border Fold the ½ yard piece of Border fabric in half, lengthwise. Cut it so it measures 9 x 30 when folded. Place a 9 x 30 piece of Battilizer between layers. Use temporary spray adhesive between the layers to hold it together. Quilt as desired. Don t you hate it when we tell you that? I just sewed rows of a decorative stitch. Or you could try rows of straight stitches or free motion. Just go for it! 36
Front and Back Sashing Method Joining and Assembly: Lil Glory Join Border to Quilt Cut Border sections and sashing strips according to Page 17 of the written instructions. Join top and bottom borders first and then the sides. Place the sashing strip right sides against the front and back of the block and sew using a ¼ seam. Flip the back sashing strip up and press. Place back of border section against back sashing strip and sew using a ¼ seam. 37
Front and Back Sashing Method Joining and Assembly: Lil Glory Join Border to Quilt Back is finished. Apply Wonder Tape inside seam on border section. Continued from previous page sewing top border section to back sashing strip using a ¼ seam. Front still has sashing flopping in the breeze. Turn raw edge of sashing strip under ¼ and adhere to the Wonder Tape with folded edge of sashing aligned on stitching. 38
Front and Back Sashing Method Joining and Assembly: Lil Glory Join Border to Quilt Back Front Sew a decorative stitch on both sides of the sashing strip. Now add the bottom border. Sew a 1 x 2 ½ piece of Border fabric to both ends of the four long sashing strips. Use these sashing strips to join the side borders. Bind and enjoy. 39
Quick Review: Invisible Method Joining Instructions: Old Glory Star section is already put together (Slide 35). Let s work on the upper right section: E1 through H3. See Page 18 of written instructions. Join blocks into rows matching stripe intersections. Sew together using ¼ seam allowance. Perfectly matched! Water soluble basting stitch is washed out after quilt is finished. Spritz or dab with water or throw in the washer. Back still has raw edge to be covered with sashing strip. Prepare sashing strip. Glue strip to cover seam allowance. Use the blind hem method shown on Slide 34. Join all the blocks into rows and join the rows to finish the top right section of the quilt. 40
Joining Instructions: Old Glory Join the star section to the top right section of the quilt. Apply vertical sashing. Sew the blocks on the bottom half of the quilt together into rows. Sash between each block. Join the rows to make the bottom section of the quilt. Apply horizontal sashing between rows. Join the top of quilt to the bottom of quilt and apply the remaining horizontal sashing. Bind and enjoy! 41
Blue Star Service Banner Fold one of the 9 x 10 pieces of white fabric in quarters. Finger press to mark a cross hair fold in the center. Unfold and with a water soluble pen mark the fold line. Make a quilt sandwich with the marked fabric on top, then the 9 x 10 piece of Battilizer and the second piece of white fabric on the bottom. Spray temporary spray adhesive between layers. Using your smallest hoop possible, hoop the sandwich, centering the cross hair. Stitch the Blue Star Service Banner design using Blue Embroidery thread in the needle and the bobbin. Remove from hoop and cut to 6 x 10 rectangle by trimming off 1 1/2 from both sides. 42
Blue Star Service Banner Using red fabric as the bread make a 5 1/2 x 24 sandwich, spray with temporary spray adhesive. Cut four 2 x 10 border pieces from sandwich. 43
Blue Star Service Banner Use the 1 sashing strips on both the front and back to join the side borders first. Square up the corners and add the top and bottom borders next. See slides for refresher on this Joining method. Bind, add sleeve and hang with pride! Thank you for honoring our service men and women. See Page 20 of the written instructions for adding a silver or gold star over the blue star. 44
