1 The Allie An in-the-hoop project A wallet/coin purse for the 5x7 hoop. The Allie has 3 credit card slots in the front section which features a large flap with a snap closure. You can carry coins or other small items in the zippered section on the back. Options included for making without the credit card slots and for adding a wrist strap. 2 Other Supplies Tear-away or cutaway stabilizer 1 piece to fit hoop (use for snap template optional) Mid-weight cutaway stabilizer (2 oz.) 3 pieces to fit in hoop #16 Pronged snap (7/16 /11mm) or #20 Kam Snap (magnetic snap optional) 9 zipper (#3 nylon skirt/dress zipper) ⅜ wide elastic for loop 2.5 for optional wristlet ⅜ - ½ wide metal d-ring for optional wristlet ⅜ gate (snap) clip with loop for optional wristlet Scotch tape or Dritz Wonder Tape double sided, water soluble, sew through tape Masking tape, washable glue stick, flat head quilting pins I recommend using poly thread throughout this design. I use contrasting thread in the images, but please use the color most suitable for your fabric. See page 26 for where I get some of my supplies. Gate clips. Come in lots of sizes and are great for removable purse straps and wristlets D-Ring Special Precautions You will be hooping only the stabilizer. It needs to be tight in the hoop with no slippage. You do not want the project to start sagging part way through. You will be taking the hoop on and off the machine a number of times. Be very careful not to disturb the project in the hoop. Place the hoop on a flat surface while working. This will help keep the project from shifting in the hoop while you work. Some machines do not behave well when the foot is running over tape. The foot will drag causing skipped stitches as well as broken threads and needles. If you tape the pieces down, don t put the tape right against the seam allowance. You can tape across the corners instead of on the sides. Please stay with your machine at all times. Watch that the foot does not become caught in the fabric layers. If you must stop the machine and back up to redo a section of the design, remove the hoop first. Then back up to the desired position. If you return to the start of the color stop, be sure to advance the machine one stitch so the needle returns to the start position. Then it is safe to return the hoop to the machine. If your machine foot adjusts height according to what is under it when dropped, move the needle to the thickest part of the project, put the hoop back on the machine, drop the foot and stitch from that point. 2 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

3 Flap Template Create template if using a magnetic snap You can also choose to print a paper template of 1Allie_Flap from your favorite software. Hoop one piece of cutaway stabilizer. Load 1Allie_Flap Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Colors #1, 3 & 4, 1 2 Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the stabilizer from the hoop. 3 Cut the template out on the stitching lines. Lay aside. Use to mark the magnetic snap placement on the flap lining. Continue with 1_Flap, page 4. Keep this template for future use. Label it Allie Flap Template. 4 1 Flap Includes faux topstitching edge Hoop one piece of mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Load 1Allie_FLAP into your machine. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline for the Flap Front. The small triangle indicates the top of the flap. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 2B Place the Flap (G) fabric FACE UP centered over the outer placement stitches. If the fabric is directional, place it so the print is running in the direction the small arrow is pointing. You may use a dab or two of washable glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or masking tape to hold the fabric in place. G 2C Return the hoop to the machine. Change thread to color desired for the faux top-stitching. Stitch Color #2, tacking the fabric in place and doing the faux stitching around the edge. 3 4A Stitch Color #3, the snap placement. Skip this color stop if using a magnetic snap! Use the instructions on page 3 to create a snap placement template. Remove the hoop from the machine. 5 4B Place the Flap Lining (D) FACE DOWN over the project in the hoop, covering all stitching lines. If the fabric is directional, the top of the print goes closest to the curved edge (upside down now, but when you open the purse, it will be right side up). D 4C Place the prepared piece of cutaway stabilizer, Flap Stabilizer (H), over the fabric in the hoop, This will firm up the lining and reinforce it for the snap. Tape or pin all layers securely to the hooped stabilizer. You don t want it to shift while it stitches. 4D 5 Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #4, stitching the edge seam for the flap. It will baste in place first, then sew the seam twice. Remove project from the machine. Remove project from the hoop. Turn the project over to the bobbin side so you can all of the stitches. see 6 Trim all layers close to the outer row of stitching on all 4 sides. Clip the curves in to the 2 nd row of stitching. 5 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

6 Press edges to set seam. 7 Turn right side out. Press flap. (If using a vinyl or faux leather, press from the lining side or use a pressing cloth) Apply male side of #16 pronged snap or #20 Kam snap through all flap layers at the snap placement lines following the instructions for your product. 8 If using a magnetic snap, use the template you made on page 3 to mark the snap placement. Apply male part to lining and lining stabilizer only. If you need instructions on how to apply the snap, download the PDF file from my website. Here is a direct link for your convenience. 7 2 Pocket Hoop one piece of mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Load 2Allie_PCKT into your machine. Rotate the design in the hoop so the small triangle on one long edge is pointing to the open edge of the machine to the left on most single needle machines and to the bottom on multi-needle machines. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline for the pocket. The small triangle is on the top edge of the pocket. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 2C Fold the pocket in half right sides together so it measures 4.25 x Press a crease on the fold line. 2C Place the folded Pocket Fabric (E) over the placement stitching with the fold along the top stitching line (the line with the triangle). Position the print of your fabric accordingly. The two sides and the bottom should extend beyond the stitching lines approximately ½ on each edge. You may use a light coating of washable glue stick to hold the fabric in place. E 7 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

8 Unfold the pocket. The top half of the pocket will extend over the edge of the hoop. Do not trim the extra fabric. It will become the pocket lining. 2D Tape or pin the edges along the lower half to hold fabric in place. If taping the fabric pieces in place be sure to keep all tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. Return the hoop to the machine. 2E Change thread to color desired for faux top-stitching. Stitch Color #2, tacking the fabric in place and stitching the faux top stitching at upper edge of pocket 3 Stitch Color #3, the snap placement 4 Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. Trim the stabilizer along the stitching line with the triangle. You can cut right on the stitches. 5 Fold the pocket in half on the middle stitching line, wrong sides together. 6 Trim the remaining stabilizer even with the fabric edges. 8 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

9 7 Slide the Pocket Stabilizer (I) inside the pocket. Apply the female half of the snap to pocket at placement stitching following instructions for your product. 8 Snaps go through front layer, stabilizer and Pocket Stabilizer. 10 Hoop one piece of mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. 3 Credit Card Sleeve Skip to 3 Front, page 14, if not doing the credit card slots Load 3Allie_CRDT into your machine. Rotate design so that the small triangle is on the closed side of the machine to the right on most single needles and to the top on multi-needle machines. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. The small triangle indicates the top edge of the piece. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Extend the 3 short lines at the edges onto the stabilizer using a pencil. 2B Apply a light layer of child s glue stick to the stabilizer between the two upper lines, indicated by the arrows in the example to the right. 2C Place the Credit Card Sleeve (B) fabric FACE UP over the placement stitching. The top (short edge) should be about ½ above the long straight placement line and the long edges should extend about ½ beyond the placement stitching on the sides. The remainder of the fabric will hang over the edge of the hoop for now. Smooth into place. B 10 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

11 Return the hoop to the machine. 2D Stitch Color #2, tacking the fabric in place. It will also add the markings for the flap and pocket placement. 3A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. We are now going to fanfold the slots for the credit cards. 3B Fold the fabric upward on the lowest stitched line. Side edges should be kept even. Press crease in fabric. Fold the fabric back down at the top side markings. Side edges should be kept even. 3C Crease fold with iron. Continue to fold fabric using the next lower stitched/marked lines for lower and upper fold lines. 3D Crease folds with iron. You should have 3 slots when finished. It should look like the picture to the right. Tape the sides in place. Return the hoop to the machine. 3E Stitch Color #3, stitching down the folds and creating 3 card slots in the middle. If you folded the pleats correctly the folds should be stitched down with the zigzag stitch falling either right below the fold or slightly covering the folded edge. 11 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

12 4A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Find the 2 short lines of stitching on the side edges, near the top of the credit card sleeve. NOTE Place the fold on the prepared pocket (right side up) right agains the two short lines. 4B Check that the lower stitched corners of the pocket line up with the lower stitched corners of the credit card sleeve. Tape edges in place keeping tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. 4C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #4, tacking the pocket to the credit card sleeve. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. NOTE Find the flap placement lines at the top of the piece. There are two short lines coming down from the top and a long one running about ¼ all the way across. Center the flap (right side up) between the two short lines. 5B The seam line at the top of the flap should line up with the seam line near the top of the credit card sleeve (green line in image). 13 5C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #5, stitching the flap to the credit card sleeve. 6 Do not stitch Color #6. It is there to keep the foot from returning to the center of the embroidery. 7 Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. Trim stabilizer and fabric about ½ outside of stitching on all edges. 8 9 Carefully press and place to one side. Continue with 4 Back, page The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

14 3 Front For use when not making credit card slots Hoop one piece of mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Load 3Allie_FRNT into your machine. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Place the Front (A) fabric FACE UP, centering it over the placement stitching. Tape edges to stabilizer or hoop. You can use washable glue stick to hold fabric in place instead of tape. A 2B Return the hoop to the machine. 2C Stitch Color #2, tacking the fabric to the stabilizer and creating the placement lines for the pocket and flap. Remove the tape. 3A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 14 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

15 Find the 2 short lines of stitching on the side edges, near the top. NOTE Line the fold of the prepared pocket (right side up) up to the two short lines. 3B Check that the lower stitched corners of the pocket line up with the lower stitched corners of the credit card sleeve. Tape or pin edges in place keeping tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. 3C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #3, tacking the pocket to the front. 4A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. NOTE Find the flap placement lines at the top of the piece. There are two short lines coming down from the top and a long one running about ¼ all the way across. Center the flap (right side up) between the two short lines. 4B The seam line at the top of the flap should line up with the seam line near the top of the credit card sleeve (green line in image). 17 4 Back Hoop one piece of mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Tear-away or wash-away will NOT hold everything together, so please do not attempt using them. Load 4Allie_BACK into your machine. Rotate the design in the hoop so that the triangle is at the top in a horizontal hoop and to the right in a vertical hoop. If making as a wristlet, this is the left-handed version. If wanting a right-handed wristlet, MIRROR (Flip) the design in the hoop. Don t forget to mirror the directions as you go especially the zipper tab and the wristlet loop. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Turn it over and place it WRONG SIDE UP on a flat surface. 2B Place one piece of the Lining (C) fabric FACE UP, centered over the placement stitches. Tape edges to stabilizer or hoop (or use a light coating of washable glue). C 2C Turn the hoop over and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 17 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

18 2D Place the Back (F) fabricface UP, centered over the placement stitching. Tape edges to stabilizer or hoop (or use a light coating of washable glue). F 2E Return the hoop to the machine. Make sure that the lining is still lying smooth underneath the hoop. Stitch Color #2, stitching the fabric and lining to the stabilizer. It also stitches the placement lines for the zipper. 3A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 3B 3C Carefully trim away the fabric from inside the smaller rectangle inside the zipper placement stitching. Do NOT cut into the stabilizer. It must remain in place to help hold the zipper. Do NOT put the zipper down yet! Turn the hoop over and place it WRONG SIDE UP on a flat surface. 3D Carefully trim away the lining fabric from inside the smaller rectangle inside the zipper placement stitching. Do NOT cut into the stabilizer. It must remain in place to help hold the zipper. 18 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

19 3E Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #3, the zigzag stitching over the cut edges in the zipper area. 4A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Place the zipper FACE UP, over the trimmed opening, centering the long edges between the outer placement stitching lines. 4B The metal pull tab should be to the top in a vertical hoop and to the left in a horizontal hoop. Place it and the metal stop at the end of the zipper well outside the stitching lines so the foot and needle will not hit them. (If you mirrored the design, the tab will be to the right in a horizontal hoop and to the bottom in a vertical hoop). Use strips of scotch tape to hold the zipper in place along both long sides, catching just the edge. You may use Dritz Wonder Tape on the back of the zipper instead of the scotch tape method if you prefer. Tape down the zipper pull tab so it points away from the case. Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #5, the decorative stitching on the zipper. 4C Stop the machine at the end of the straight stitching, just as it starts to do the fancy stitch. Remove all of the tape. Then continue stitching the fancy stitch. 5A 5B Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. OPEN THE ZIPPER HALFWAY! DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! Take a sharp pair of scissors and poke a small hole through the stabilizer showing in the zipper opening. This will make it easier to trim the backing away later. 19 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

20 Optional Wristlet Step 1 Find the short line just above the top edge of the zipper tape, left (top) edge. 5C Optional Wristlet Step 2 5D Fold the piece of elastic (or a stitched strip) in half with raw ends together. Slide the ½ d-ring onto the elastic. Tape the raw ends closed. Note: you can skip the d-ring. The strap can clip onto the elastic loop. 5E 5F Place the elastic on the top of the zipper above the coil and below the short stitching line on the left side (top in vertical hoop) with the raw edges outside the stitching lines. Note: the d-ring goes on the same side as the zipper tab: on the left (top) for left-handed purse, and on the right (bottom) for right-handed purse. Tape cut ends in place outside stitching lines. Tape D-ring on top of zipper to keep it from moving into stitching line. Check that the zipper is open halfway. Place the prepared Credit Card Sleeve or Front FACE DOWN on top of the Back with openings in slots toward the top (triangle) edge. Match the 4 corners on both pieces as closely as possible. 21 Place the Lining (C) FACE UP on top of the credit card sleeve/front. Tape corners in place. 5G 5H Return the hoop to the machine. Did I mention to double check that the zipper is open halfway? Stitch Color #5. I usually match the thread to the outside fabric, not the lining so it isn t seen on the edges once the bag it turned right side out. 5I It will go around once with a basting stitch. You can stop the machine if necessary and easily remove this round of stitches if you get a pucker or the fabric shifts The second and third rounds sew the seam in normal stitch length. If you need to stop the machine and go back to another point in the color stop during this step remove the hoop first. Then back up to the desired position. If you return to the start of the color stop, be sure to advance the machine one stitch so the needle returns to the start position. Then it is safe to return the hoop to the machine. If your machine foot adjusts height according to what is under it when dropped, move the needle to the thickest part of the project, put the hoop back on the machine, drop the foot and stitch from that point. 6 Do not stitch Color #6. It is there to keep the foot from returning to the center of the embroidery. Remove the hoop from the machine. 7 Remove the project from the hoop. Remove all tape. 8 One last time, check that the zipper is open halfway. It is too late to fix it after you trim! If you forgot to open it, carefully open the seam; push the zipper pull through to the inside, then stitch the purse shut on your regular sewing machine. 21 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

22 Trim away all excess fabric and stabilizer trimming as close you can to the zigzag stitching without cutting thru it. Cut right thru the zipper but don t use your best shears! 9 Take this slowly. You may need to do it in several layers. The narrower your seam allowance, the better your curved seams will look without having to clip them. You may cut away the stitching at the corners that were used for placement stitching, but do not cut into any of the zigzag stitches. I also try not to cut the ends off of the elastic as I trim. I like to leave them a little longer to help prevent them from pulling out. 11 Steam press the stitching lines to set the seam. Carefully trim away the stabilizer from behind the zipper. Cut close to but do not cut into the decorative stitches. 12 Tip: Find the zipper tab and push the point of your scissors or a seam ripper in at that point. It will protect your zipper tape from an accidental slit. 13 Reach in and open the zipper the whole way. Tip: If the zipper won t move, reach in and flip the tab upward. The zipper is locked when the tab is pointed down. It sometimes helps to push the zipper closed a bit and then push it open. 14 Turn the purse right side out through the opening in the zipper. Use a point turner to help push the edges of the seams outward. Steam press being very careful not to melt the zipper. 23 16 If making wristlet, see following instructions for both a permanent and removable strap. Enjoy! Wrist Strap Fold under ¼ on one long edge on Wrist Strap (L). Press. 1 L Fold under ½ on opposite long edge. Press fold. 2 Fold strip in half lengthwise, so folded edges come together. Press fold The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

24 4 Insert a strip of mid-weight or heavyweight stabilizer between the layers to add support to the fabric and keep it from stretching. With your regular sewing machine, stitch close to both folded edges using a straight machine stitch. 5 Finish as a permanent strap (below) or a detachable strap, page 25. Permanent Strap Slide one end into the loop on the end of a ⅜ gate clip. Fold the raw end under (wrong sides together) about ⅜. Fold again, back over the ring, overlapping itself about 1. 6 Using your regular machine stitch close to the fold. You can stitch about ¼ away from the first stitching for a more secure seam. Slip the opposite end around the D-ring on the edge of the purse. Fold the raw end under (wrong sides together) about ⅜. Fold again, back over the ring, overlapping itself about 1. 7 Using your regular machine stitch close to the fold. Stitch again about ¼ away from the first stitching for a more secure seam. I usually sew back and forth at least twice on both seams. 8 Clip the gate clip onto the D-ring or into the elastic loop. 24 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts

25 Detachable Strap Slide one raw edge of the strap into and around the ring on the end of the gate clip. With the right sides of the strap together, place the raw ends together, completing a loop. 1 Sew together about 1/8 from the raw ends. Shown slightly offset Turn the band so the wrong sides are now inside the loop. Pull the loop through the gate clip ring until the seam is about 1 above it. Press the raw edges toward the gate clip. 2 Pinch the strap together at the seam and top stitch on the seam through all layers. (This makes a small loop around the gate clip). After stitching Stitch again, about ¼ from the seam line towards to the gate clip. This encloses the raw ends between the two stitching lines. 3 4 Clip the gate clip onto the D-ring or into the elastic loop. 25 The Allie 2015, Pegboard Crafts
