No-Slip Dish Towel An easy-to-use towel topper with a button enclosure keeps this kitchen towel at hand and ready to use in a flash. Cheerful embroidery adds a burst of color and charm to the handy no-slip towel. Project Needs & Notes - Dish towel (the towel used in this tutorial is 19" x 27 1/2") - 1/3 yard quilted cotton for topper - Medium weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Lightweight water-soluble stabilizer (such as Sulky Solvy) - Air-erase pen for marking - Extra wide double fold bias tape - 6" length of 1/8" wide ribbon, for button loop - 1" button - Needle and thread for some hand sewing Designs used in this tutorial include C8405, Tropical Hibiscus Rectangle and H2488, Rooster Woodcut. Finished Size: The topper is 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" This project was featured in the following: Let's Dish Lookbook Begin by embroidering the towel. A template, or printout of a design, is an excellent tool to help with placement. Print a template of the design from your embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use. Lay the towel flat with the right side facing up. Center the template on the towel with the bottom edge of the design about 2" from the bottom edge of the towel. Mark the center point of the design and the horizontal and vertical axis lines. Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks. Hoop the towel with a piece of cutaway stabilizer on the bottom, and water-soluble stabilizer on the top. When hooping, line up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric, and embroider the design.
After embroidering, tear the water-soluble stabilizer away from the top. You can use a damp sponge to remove any remaining bits. Trim the cutaway stabilizer away from the back of the towel. Draw a 8" x 9" rectangle on the quilted cotton. Leave a couple of inches of excess fabric around the shape. Measure and mark the center of each side edge. Draw a line connecting the marks. The area above the line will be the embroidered area for the front of the topper. Next, print a template of the design and position it in the rectangle. Position the design with the bottom edge about 1/2" from the line and at least 1" from the side and top edges.
Mark the center point of the design, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines. Hoop the fabric with medium weight cutaway stabilizer, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop. Embroider the design. After embroidering, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back. Cut out the rectangle shape. To prepare the back fabric, lay the embroidered front piece on top of the fabric, wrong sides together. Pin in place, and cut around the shape. Next, to prepare the button loop, cut a 6" piece of 1/8" wide ribbon. Form the ribbon into a loop and tape the raw ends together. Wrap the outer edges of both layers of the fabric with the bias tape, starting about 1" from the bottom right corner. Pin in place as you wrap, pinching and folding the tape at each corner.
Tuck the ribbon loop under the tape and in-between the fabric layers at the bottom center of the fabric with 1 1/2" of the loop extending out past the edges of the tape. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape all the way around the outer edges of the fabric. Overlap the ends of the tape about 1/2" and fold the end over 1/4". Add the button at the center of the top edge along the bias tape. Lay the towel flat with the wrong side facing up. Fold the outer edges in to the wrong side about 3". Mark the center of each side, along both edges of each fold, by measuring and dividing by two. Draw lines connecting the marks, pin the folds in place, and sew a seam along the lines you just drew to tack the folds in place.
Flip the towel over and lay it flat with the right side facing up. Place the topper on top of the towel, right sides together, with the center marks of the topper aligned with the seams on the towel. The button will face down towards the bottom of the towel (the ribbon loop will face the top of the towel). Center the towel side to side. Pin the topper in place in the center. Flip the towel and topper over so the wrong side of the towel is facing up. Working from the center out, pinch and fold the towel over 1/2" about every inch and sew a seam over the folds to tack them in place. Do this on each side of the towel starting from the pin in the center.
Not only does the cheerful topper and button make this an ingenious dish towel solution, but eye-catching embroidery mean it's a room-brightener for your kitchen as well! Questions or comments? Let us know! Send an to us; the address is stitch@emblibrary.com.
