Made for Each Other Pillows

1 Two embroidered pillows create the shape of a heart when displayed together. Use to decorate your home, or give as a wedding gift! Project Needs & Notes: - 18" pillow forms - 1 1/2 yards print cotton fabric - 1/3 yard sturdy fabric like twill or faux suede (for applique pieces) - Medium-weight cutaway stabilizer - Air-erase pen - Temporary spray adhesive - Double-sided fusible web - Scotch tape Designs featured in this tutorial include: - K9712, Damask Mr. - K9716, Damask Mrs. Finished Size: 18" x 18" To get started, download and print the pattern PDF files. The patterns will print in four sections on four pieces of paper.

2 Cut out the pattern pieces and tape them together following the instructions printed on the pieces. Next, place the left side pattern piece on top of the applique fabric. Pin the pattern piece in place and using an air-erase pen, trace the shape.

3 Remove the pattern piece. Print a template of the design using embroidery software. Place the template within the shape. Position the design with the left edge 1 1/4" from the edge of the shape. Mark the center point and the axis lines. Spray a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive. Lay the fabric on top of the stabilizer and hoop both layers together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the marks on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

4 When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery. Then, cut out the shape. Add one piece of double-sided fusible web to the backside of the fabric and cut the around the shape.

5 For the front of the pillow, cut a piece of print cotton fabric to 19" x 19". Remove the paper on the back of the applique piece. Place it on top of the fabric, right side facing up, with the straight edge of the embroidered piece aligned with the right edge of the fabric. Center it top to bottom and pin in place. Sew a 1/4" seam along the outer edge of the applique piece and then sew a decorative stitch around the inner edge. Then, place a pressing cloth over the applique piece and press with an iron to activate the fusible web. Follow the instructions on the fusible web packaging. For the back of the pillow, cut two pieces of fabric to 13" x 19". On both pieces, fold one of the long edges in 1/2" to the wrong side and press. Then, fold the fabric again 1/2" to the wrong side and press. Sew a 1/4" seam along the folded edges.

6 Lay the front piece flat with the right side facing up. Align the back pieces on top, right sides together, with the seamed edges facing in. The back fabric pieces will overlap in the center. Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the entire outer edge of the fabric. Turn the fabric right side out. Insert the pillow form inside through the opening in the back. Then, use the right side pattern piece to prepare the right pillow. Follow the same steps as instructed above, but this time add the applique piece to the left side of the front fabric piece.
