Tips for Successful Embroidery! Keep these pages accessible, you will need to refer to these Tips throughout your embroidery!! Follow Claudia s two step Perfect Placement Technique for accuratly multi-hooping large designs! Step #1: Marking the design s first stitch location on the grid: Attach the hoop and grid to the module with no fabric. Open the design to be embroidered. Advance to the embroidery sewing screen. Embroidery Machines open a design in an editing screen. Touch the icon that moves you to the embroidery sewing screen. Advancing to the embroidery sewing screen takes you to the first stitch of the design, where you are ready to embroider! Many Brother, Babylock, and Singer machines have an automatic center stitch programmed into the machine. You must advance past this programmed center stitch to move to the first stitch of my designs. These machines will have an additional icon you will need to touch to move you to first stitch of my design. Bernina machines with a Basting Box option must make sure the built in basting box option is turned off before they advance to the embroidery sewing screen. Then by hand, lower your needle to touch the grid. Place an arrow shaped post-it-note on the grid so the tip of the arrow touches the tip of the needle. (See picture) This marks the first stitch location of my design on the grid (not the center of the design, not the center of the hoop, but the first stitch of the opened design). Raise the needle; remove the hoop and grid from the module. Step #2: Hooping the Fabric Place the inner hoop with the grid on the (stabilized and marked) background fabric. The arrow shaped post-it-note on the grid should be pointing to either the Needle Alignment or to the Placement Line location on the background fabric. The location is noted in the Embroidery Instructions and will be different for each hooping (it will almost never be the center of the hoop). Hoop the (stabilized and marked) fabric with the lines on the grid parallel and perpendicular to the drawn lines on the fabric. The drawn lines need not lie exactly under the lines of the grid, but must be parallel and perpendicular to the lines on the grid. This keeps the larger piece of fabric square and straight as you embroider. Remove the grid from the hoop and attach the hoop to the module. After you have connected the hoop to the module, the needle may need a little adjustment to be exactly over the Needle Alignment or Placement Line that are on the fabric. If needed, select the Move Hoop Icon & move the hoop to position the needle perfectly over the mark. The Needle Alignment is to place the needle correctly on the fabric, usually it is not to be sewn out; it is for needle placement only (unless otherwise indicated). If you accidently sew it out it will look like a crosshair, pick it out! To watch a demo of the Perfect Placement Technique from your computer go to: Select the Workshops tab and choose Instructional Videos / Perfect Placement. Additional Tips and Helps! Tip #1: Built in Basting Box! A. Many embroidery machines have a built-in basting box option. When this option is enabled it may add a color stop to the stitching order of the design. This option should be disabled before opening a design. If the basting box option is on or enabled when you advance to the embroidery sewing screen, you would be marking the grid with the first stitch position for the basting box and not the first stitch of the design! Be sure to disable the basting box option before opening a design. Mark the first stitch of the design with the post-it note arrow. Hoop your fabric. Now turn on or enable the basting box option and sew the basting box out. After sewing out the built-in basting box, turn it off, if your machine doesn t turn it off automatically. BERNINA s have two basting box options; turn off both before marking the grid. Leaving it on will add a thread color stop and the numbering of the colors in the instructions will be off by one: The added color for the basting box. Be sure this option if off before marking the Needle Alignment. Tip #2: Hooping Tips A. Spray temporary adhesive to the tear away stabilizer and adhere to the wrong side of the background fabric. Hoop both layers as if they were one. The piece of stabilizer must always be cut larger than the actual hoop size. This will help keep the embroidery stabilized and reduce puckering. For additional stabilization slide or float a second piece of stabilizer under the hoop! B. To make hooping easier, only stabilize the area to be embroidered. 3

C. I place sections of permanent double sided tape (not repositionable) on the wrong side of the inner hoop. Then I flip the inner hoop right side up and place the inner hoop, with the grid inside of it, on the fabric. The doubled sided tape holds the inner hoop to the fabric. This makes it easier to pick up the inner hoop and fabric and place it in the outer hoop with ease. (Always loosen the outer hoop screws as much as possible). D. You may find it easier to hoop the fabric if you remove the stabilizer from the last hooping because that will reduce the stabilizer bulk. E. Roll the excess fabric in a tube shape and use clips to hold the excess fabric out of the way. This will prevent the fabric from accidently falling under the hoop. F. As you place the hoop on the fabric remember the drawn lines on the fabric need not lie exactly under the lines of the grid, but must be parallel and perpendicular to the lines on the grid. Tip #3: Unusual Embroidery Instructions (not so common in other patterns): A. Needle Alignment: This is placed first in the stitching order. It is strictly for needle placement and not to be sewn out (unless indicated). If it is accidently sewn out it will look like a crosshair. Pick it out! B. Placement Line: This is usually a line that is to be sewn out without thread. It is an alignment tool for connecting one hooping to another. C. The blank line after the thread color: Thread Purple # (Write your thread Color # on the line) It will help you remember what color you used when you return to embroidering. Tip #4: Ironing/Pressing A. Place the embroidered background fabric wrong side up, over a cotton towel to iron. Ironing on the right side of embroidery will crush the embroidery stitches! Padding the stitches with a folded cotton towel wont crush them. I usually spay with starch and then press the fabric. Tip #5: Trimming the Blocks A. For best accuracy, use a square ruler to trim all the blocks. Place the square ruler on the block lining up two sides, then trim. Trimming with a 6 x 24 ruler is not as accurate and leads to slips and miss-cuts. If you have difficulty keeping a ruler from moving when you cut, place double sided tape on the side that goes against the fabric! Also, using quilting gloves helps to hold it in place! Select the format folder your machine reads from the Design CD: copy the format folder and paste onto a USB drive. Fabric Preparation Removing Dye: Usually I do not wash my fabrics before embroidering or piecing them into a quilt. However, if I am using reds or greens I may want to test a piece to see if it is color fast. If it is not, you may want to treat the fabric with a product that will remove the excess dye. Quilt products such as Retayne and Synthrapol always work great. Sizing or Starching the Fabric: This process will pre-shrink your fabric and leave it with body making it perfect for cutting, piecing and embroidering. Spray starch over the fabric. Hold a hot iron on the fabric until the moisture dries. Don t burn your fabric but hold it on long enough for it to dry. I always starch my fabric before embroidering on it. Woven Interfacing: First steam iron and starch the fabric. Then place the woven interfacing (Shape Flex 101 by Pellon) adhesive side down, on the wrong side of the fabric. Spray with water. Use your hands to smooth out the moistened Shape Flex over the fabric before using the steam iron. Set the steam iron on the center area of the Shape Flex and hold the iron long enough to dry & seal the two layers together, but not so long that it burns! Pick up the iron and place it close to the first spot. Repeat until all the interfacing is sealed to the fabric. This will pre-shrink both fabric and interfacing. The Shape Flex will shrink, that is expected. All the edges of the Shape Flex should be sealed to the fabric. If air bubbles are showing on the fabric, you need to spray with water and press again. 4

Made in AMERICA Cutting Instructions Spray the Background fabric with sizing and or starch and press well before cutting: Cutting Instructions for Background Fabric: Cut (1) strip 12 wide x the 42 width of fabric: Sub cut into: (2) 12 x 21 rectangles (Eagle and Mount Rushmore Blocks) Cut (1) strip 21 wide x the 42 width of fabric: Sub cut into: (2) 21 x 21 squares: Sub cut (1) square into: (1) 12 x 21 rectangle (Capitol block) Do not sub cut the remaining 21 x 21 square (1) 21 x 21 square (Lady Liberty Block) Cut (2) strips 12 x the 42 width of fabric: Do not sub cut one of the strips. (1) 12 x 42 strip (Military Emblems Block) Sub cut (1) strip into: (2) 12 x 12 squares (Liberty and Constitution Blocks) Cut (1) strip 7 x 42 width of fabric Sub cut into (5) 7 squares for Emblem appliques Block preparation for Embroidery: Place the adhesive side of the Shape Flex 101 by Pellon on the wrong or back side of each starched background piece. Spray the interfacing with water. If desired cover with a muslin pressing cloth. Starting in the center and working outward, press (not iron) the two layers together with a steam iron. To Press: Set and hold the iron on long enough to dry the spray (7-10 seconds) on the fabric. Pick up the iron and set it next to the pressed area. This will completely seal the layers together. Make sure to seal the edges! Starch each background piece after the Shape Flex has been added. The Shape Flex will shrink smaller than the fabric, don t worry that is expected! Each student must bring an empty USB stick that (works with their machine) to class. I will transfer the designs to their stick at the beginning of class. 5

Made in AMERICA Pre-Class Preparation Step #1: Cutting Instructions: Cut the blocks by following the Cutting Instructions page. Step #2: Block Preparation Follow the Block Preparation for Embroidery on the Cutting Instructions page. Step #3: Cut Polymesh Cut Away Stabilizer Cut a piece of Polymesh Stabilizer 5 larger (all around) than the Lady Liberty and the Eagle blocks. You will need to piece the Polymesh sections together to get the correct size. Overlap the Polymesh sections by 2 (use adhesive spray). Cut (1) Polymesh 31 x 31 (Lady Liberty block) Cut (1) Polymesh 22 x 31 (Eagle Block) Center the fabric over the stabilizer and use temporary adhesive spray to glue to two layers together. See Example A. Top layer fabric (ironed and starched) Middle layer Shape Flex (ironed & starched to back of fabric) Bottom layer - Polymesh (glued to the Shape Flex) Step #4: Marking the fabric: Mark a center crosshair on each block the full width and length of the fabric. This takes some time so please take your time and be accurate. Use a removable pen (with a thin tip). Do not use an air erasable pen. I use a 20 ½ square ruler to mark my fabric to be accurate. To see a demo of this go to Click on the workshop tab/ Instructional Videos / Perfect Placement Add additional lines to: Lady Liberty Block: Add Vertical lines 6 apart on either side of the center Vertical line. Military Emblem Block: Add Vertical lines 6 & 12 apart on either side of the center Vertical line. See Example B. Step #5: Sew Polymesh & Basting Stitches on all blocks Sew all around the fabric block, 1/8 from the edge sewing the fabric to the Polymesh. Use your Dual feed or walking foot. This will help eliminate stretch during the embroidery process. See example of Eagle block. Change to a basting stitch: sew in between the drawn lines vertically and horizontally to help eliminate stretching during embroidery. Bring all cut and prepared pieces to class. I like to hang my prepared blocks from a pant hanger to bring to class. This keeps them flat and wrinkle free. Please make sure to prepare The Lady Liberty and Eagle blocks, they are first to be embroidered. 6

Outer Border Options Option #1 Outer Border: The outer border is made up of finished 6 pieced scrappy Star blocks, Flying Geese, and the outer border fabric. Use any star pattern you desire as long as the finished size is 6. I used 8 star and 8 flying geese blocks. Option #2 Outer Border: Make13 star blocks with a combination of 6 and 4 finished stars to represent the 13 colonies. Combine the pieced star blocks with the outer border fabric to get the desired length needed for the borders. Piece the star blocks and sew them to the border fabric. Arrange the blocks any way you desire. Cut (2) side borders 6 ½ x 42 ½. (Before you cut the borders make sure your quilt measures 42 ½ or it could be too short!). Sew the side borders to the quilt top. Press and starch the seams to the inner border. Piece the remaining star blocks and sew them to the border fabric. Cut the top and bottom border length to 54 ½. (Before you cut the border make sure your quilt top measures 54 ½ or it could be too short!). Sew the top border to the top and the bottom border to the bottom of the main quilt. Press and starch the seams to the inner border. The quilt top measures 54 ½ x 54 ½. Add a red outer border. Cut the red fabric 3 x the length needed. Sew the borders to the quilt top. Continue by following the Embroidery Instructions for the words Made in AMERICA and USA. After my quilt is quilted I am embroidering the names and dates of my family members who have served in the armed forces. These names will be embroidered directly on to the outer quilted border. 43

Saw tooth 6 Star The stars points are made from 1 ½ finished Half-Square Triangles. (Use any method you prefer.) Unfinished size measurements include the seam allowance; finished measurements do not include seam allowance. Make (5) 6 finished Stars and (8) 4 finished Stars (13 Stars representing the original colonies) Place a piece of background and star fabric with right sides together on top of each other. Cut a clean edge. Cut a 2 ½ strip from both fabrics at the same time. Crosscut into 2 ½ squares. This will make a 2 ½ sandwich of Background and Star fabric with right sides facing each other. Cut (24) of these sandwiches! This will make (48) half square triangles. Each sandwich makes (2) half-square triangles blocks. Draw a diagonal line across each background square, from corner to corner. Sew ¼ from either side of the diagonal drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Press the seam allowance to the darker fabric. Each block will need to be trimmed. Place the diagonal seam line on the 45 mark on a square ruler and trim the block to a perfect 2 square. You will be trimming the block to be the perfect size instead of sewing it to be the perfect size. Take (2) half squares and rotate the blocks to match this picture. Flip the right half-square on top of the left half-square, right sides together. Pin to secure and sew the right side. Starch and press the seam open. Make (4) half square unit sets for each star. Starch & cut a 2 ½ strip of Background Fabric. Cross cut into 2 ½ squares. Place a single square on either end of the half square unit. Use a scant quarter inch seam & make (2) rows for each star. Starch & press the seam open to reduce bulk. Measures 6 ½ x 2. Starch and cut a 3 ½ strip of Star Fabric. Cross cut into 3 ½ squares. Place a half-square unit on either side of the 3 ½ square following the placement in the picture. Use a scant quarter inch seam & make (1) row for each star. Press the seams open to reduce bulk. Measures 6 ½ x 3 ½. Sew the top and bottom rows to the center row. Use scant quarter inch seams. Follow the placement in the picture. Starch and press seams away from the center. Unfinished size is 6 ½ square. 44

Saw tooth 4 Star The stars points are made from 1 ½ finished Half-Square Triangles. (Use any method you prefer.) Unfinished size measurements include the seam allowance; finished measurements do not include seam allowance. Make (5) 6 finished Stars and (8) 4 finished Stars (13 Stars representing the original colonies) Sew with scant quarter inch seams (shy of a full ¼ seam). Place a piece of background and star fabric with right sides together on top of each other. Cut a clean edge. Cut a 1 ¾ strip from both fabrics at the same time. Crosscut into 1 ¾ squares. This will make a 1 ¾ sandwich of Background and Star fabric with right sides facing each other. Cut (32) of these sandwiches! This will make (64) half square triangles. Each sandwich makes (2) half-square triangles blocks. Draw a diagonal line across each background square, from corner to corner. Sew a scant ¼ seam on either side of the diagonal drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Open and press the seam allowance to the darker fabric. Place the diagonal seam line on the 45 mark on a square ruler and trim the block to a perfect 1 ½ square, if needed. Take (2) half squares and rotate the blocks to match this picture. Flip the right half-square on top of the left half-square, right sides together. Pin to secure and sew the right side. Starch and press the seam open. Measures 2 ½ x 1 ½ (It won t measure 2 ½ if your seams are wider than a scant ¼ ). Make (4) half square unit sets for each star. Starch & cut a 1 ½ strip of Background Fabric. Cross cut into 1 ½ squares. Place a single square on either end of the half square unit. Use a scant quarter inch seam & make (2) rows for each star. Starch & press the seam open to reduce bulk. Measures 4 ½ x 1 ½ Starch and cut a 2 ½ strip of Star Fabric. Cross cut into 2 ½ squares. Place a half-square unit on either side of the 2 ½ square following the placement in the picture. Use a scant quarter inch seam & make (1) row for each star. Press the seams open to reduce bulk. Measures 4 ½ x 2 ½ Sew the top and bottom rows to the center row. Use scant quarter inch seams. Follow the placement in the picture. Starch and press seams away from the center. Unfinished size is 4 ½ square. 45
