The Sunshine An in-the-hoop project All the music I walk to is on my phone, but my new iphone 6+ is too big to fit in my pocket. This case is the perfect solution. That s my iphone 6+ peeking out of it in the picture. And isn t that Hello Kitty fabric adorable? The case has a little pocket inside the zipper area for my license/bank card and room for a little cash. With the addition of a key ring clip I can hook it onto my belt loop. No belt loop? Make an adjustable clip-on belt. And get out in the sunshine and walk Requires a medium or large hoop (140 x 200mm +). Approximate finished size is 4.5 x Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts Updated May 2016 stitching removed on both sides of pocket, creating 2 extra mini-pockets, optional pocket added to front. peggy@pegboardcrafts.com (419) Do not resize this design. The zipper will not fit if you do!!! Cutting Chart I suggest marking each piece of fabric with the corresponding letter Design Size 130 x 198mm 5.12 x The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts Cut Size A. Front Fabric x 8.75 B. 2 Suggested fabrics: Cottons or quilting cottons. Linings may also be made from regular lining fabric to help reduce bulk. Optional Batting: Fusible fleece, Pellon fleece, Warm and Natural. *Batting will make your case firmer than using just stabilizer alone. If using fusible fleece, pre-fuse it to the back of piece A., I will remind you in the instructions when to place it if using regular batting. Copyright: You are given license to use this design. Shown with #20 Kam Snap. 2 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

You may find it easier to place and/or trim fabric by taking the hoop off of the machine. Always place it on a flat surface, not on your lap. This will help keep the project from shifting in the hoop. The Front Non-Zipper Side You only need to stitch The Front, page 3, if you plan on adding a design or monogram to the front of the case. Add your design using your favorite software or at your machine. Substitute it for the text in Step #3 on page 4. If not adding anything to the front, skip to the instructions for The Back on page 6. Hoop mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Load the file Sunshine6+_Frnt into your machine. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. The small triangle indicates the top of the design. 1 Place optional Batting (E) over the placement lines, covering all stitching. 2A E 3 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Place the Front (A) FACE UP over the placement lines. Tape edges in place. A 2B 2C Stitch Color #2, tacking down the fabric to the stabilizer. Color #3. Stitch your design or monogram here instead of the words The Sunshine. Be sure to leave at least ½ on all sides for seam allowance. 3 4 Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. 5 Cut away excess fabric and stabilizer from outside the rectangular stitching, leaving approximately ½ extra fabric on all sides. 6 Lay the front to one side and continue with TheBack on page 6. 4 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Optional Outer Pocket 1 Fold Outer Pocket (G) in half, wrong sides together so it measures 6.5 x Slip the Outer Pocket Reinforcement (H) inside the pocket. 3 If desired, you may top stitch 3/8 from the folded edge using your sewing machine. 4 Lay the pocket to one side and continue with TheBack on page 6. 5 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

The Back Zipper Side Hoop mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Do NOT use polymesh or tearaway. Load the file Sunshine6+_Back into your machine. Rotate the design so that the small triangle is at the top in a vertical hoop and to the left in a horizontal hoop. Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Turn it over so the BACK of the hoop is FACE UP. Place in a horizonal position on a flat surface, double triangles to the top. Place one Lining (C) FACE UP over the placement lines, covering all stitching. Pin, use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or masking tape to hold the lining in place. C 2B If pinning, keep the pins far enough away from the stitching lines that the foot cannot hit them. Do NOT wait until the last step to apply the lining for the back. You won t be able to get to the zipper to open it. 2C Turn the hoop back over to the right side and return it to the machine. Make sure that the lining is still laying smooth underneath the hoop. Stitch Color #2, tacking the lining to the stabilizer and creating 2 placement marks on both short ends. 6 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

If you are not putting the small pocket inside the bag, skip Color #3 and Color #4. Continue with Step #5A, next page. Optional. Stitch Color #3, the snap placement. Applying a snap will keep your cards safe in the slot when you open the case. 3 4A Remove the hoop from the machine. Turn it over so the BACK of the hoop is FACE UP. Place in horizontal position on a flat surface, the double triangles at the top. 4B Fold the Inner Pocket (D) in half, wrong sides together, so it measures 3.75 x Slip the reinforcement stabilizer (F) (between the layers to reinforce the fabric. FOLD D Place the folded pocket over the lining fabric, with the fold on the imaginary line between the point of the triangle and the short line at the far end. The triangle is at the TOP and the pocket covers the RIGHT half. 4C The sides and bottom edges should extend about ½ beyond the stitched lines. Pin the bottom and side edges to the stabilizer, keeping the pins far enough away from the stitching lines that the foot won t hit them. You can pin inside the stitching lines if necessary. You can tape the center of the pocket to keep it from catching on the bobbin area of a multineedle machine. 7 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Change the BOBBIN thread if you want the stitching to match the pocket fabric. Turn the hoop back over to the right side and return it to the machine. 4D Stitch Color #4, creating 3 small inner pockets. This is what it looks like from the front side of the hoop. All the fabric is on the back of the hoop so far. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 5B Place the Back (B) FACE UP over the placement lines, covering all stitching. Pin edges in place keeping the pins far enough away from the stitching lines that the foot won t hit them. You can pin inside the stitching lines if necessary. B Stitch Color #5, the tack-down to hold the fabric in place and creating the placement stitching for the zipper. 5C 8 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

6A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 6B Carefully trim away the fabric inside the smaller rectangle in the zipper placement area. Remove the batting from this small area too. Do NOT trim into the stabilizer. You need it in there to help keep the zipper from shifting as it is stitched. 6C Turn the hoop over to the wrong side and place it on a flat surface. 6D Carefully trim away the lining fabric from inside the smaller rectangle inside the zipper placement stitching. Do NOT trim into the stabilizer. You need it in there to help keep the zipper from shifting as it is stitched. DO NOT put the zipper down yet! 6E Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #6, a zigzag stitching that covers the raw edges of the zipper opening. 7A 7B Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Place the zipper FACE UP, over the trimmed opening, centering the long edges between the outer placement stitching lines. Not all zippers are the same width. It is up to you to get it centered and straight. The metal pull tab should be to the top in a vertical hoop and to the left in a horizontal hoop. Place it and the metal stop at the end of the zipper well outside the stitching lines so the foot and needle will not hit them. Use strips of scotch tape to hold the zipper in place along both long sides, catching just the edge. You may use Dritz Wonder Tape on the back of the zipper instead of the scotch tape method if you prefer. Tape the zipper pull tab down so it points away from the case. 9 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Return the hoop to the machine. 7C 8 Stitch Color #7, the decorative stitching on the zipper. Stop the machine at the end of the straight stitching, just as it starts to do the fancy stitch. Remove all of the tape. Then continue stitching the fancy stitch. Stitch Color #8, the optional buttonhole at the bottom left side of the case for your earbud cables to go through. 9A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. OPEN THE ZIPPER HALFWAY! 9B DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! Take a sharp pair of scissors and poke a small hole through the stabilizer showing in the zipper opening. This will make it easier to trim the backing away later. 9C Fold the elastic in half. Sew or tape the cut ends together. 9D Note the two short lines to the left side of the zipper. These are the placement lines for the elastic loop. Center the folded elastic between the two marks, cut edges to the outside of the stitching lines, fold placed inside the stitching lines. 9E Tape edges in place keeping tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. FOLD 10 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Optional. Place the prepared Outer Pocket Face Down over the project in the hoop, the folded edge even with the two small lines about 1 from the top (single triangle) edge. If this is a one way print, you should be seeing the print upside down. 9F You can adjust the position of the top to your liking just make sure that the bottom edge of the pocket overlaps the stitching line by at least ¼. Center pocket over side edges, overlapping the stitching lines on both sides. Pin in place can pin inside stitching lines. Keep those pins away from the outer stitching lines! Top of print one way print upside down! Place the prepared front, or a piece of pretty fabric, over the project in the hoop, FACE DOWN. Match all four corners of the original placement lines on the prepared case front to those on the case back. I stick pins down into the corners to make sure they match! 9F All edges will overlap the placement stitches about ½. Pin securely in place keeping all pins away from the outer stitching lines. You may pin inside the stitching lines if necessary. Want to see how I match the pieces up perfectly? Visit my blog at 9G Place the optional Batting (E) over the project in the hoop (only if it was not applied while making The Front). Cover all stitching lines. Place the remaining Lining (D) FACE UP over the project in the hoop, covering the outer stitching lines. Tape all edges keeping tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. 9H 11 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Did I mention to double check that the zipper is open halfway? 9I Stitch Color #9. I usually match the thread to the outside fabric, not the lining so it isn t seen on the edges once the bag is turned right side out. Stay with your machine and watch it carefully as it stitches! It will go around 3 times. The first time is a basting stitch to make it easy to remove if something puckers or isn t placed right. Be prepared to stop the machine at any moment. Watch that the foot does not get caught in any of the fabric layers. NOTE If you need to stop the machine and go back to another point in the color stop during this step Remove the hoop from the machine first. Then move the needle back to the desired starting position before returning the hoop to the machine. This will keep the foot from crossing the middle of the project. It is VERY thick in the middle and the foot may run into it and throw the embroidery hoop position off-kilter. IMPORTANT always back up to the area of greatest thickness before dropping the foot and continuing stitching so the foot is high enough not to bump into to any ridges. This is especially important if your machine does not have a hopping embroidery foot. 10 Do not stitch Color #10 (the X). It is there to keep the foot from returning to the center of the embroidery. The stitching part is done. Remove the hoop from the machine and the project from the hoop. 11 One last time, check that the zipper is open halfway. It is too late to fix it after you trim! If you forgot to open it, carefully open the seam; push the zipper pull through to the inside. Stitch the case shut on your regular sewing machine. Trim away all excess fabric and stabilizer trimming as close you can to the zigzag stitching without cutting thru it. Cut right thru the zipper but don t use your best shears! I try not to cut the ends of the elastic off as I trim. Keeping them longer will help keep them from pulling out during use. 12 The narrower your seam allowance, the better your curved seams will look without having to clip them. You can cut away the stitching at the corners that were for placement stitching, but do not cut into any of the zigzag stitches. The narrower your seam allowance, the better your curved seams will look without having to clip them. 12 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Trim away the excess stabilizer from the back of the zipper, starting in the slit you cut in the stabilizer earlier. Be very careful not to cut the zipper tape and don t snip any of the decorative stitches. 13 Tip: Find the zipper tab and push the point of your scissors or a seam ripper in at that point. It will protect your zipper tape from an accidental slit Steam press the stitching lines to set the seam. Use a pressing cloth if necessary to protect the fabric and zipper. Open the zipper the whole way. Tip: If the zipper won t move, reach in and flip the tab upward. The zipper is locked when the tab is pointed down. It sometimes helps to push the zipper closed a bit and then push it open. Turn the case thru the opening in the zipper. Use a point turner to help turn the case and push the edges of the seams outward. The front pocket should be turned so it covers the front (non-zipper) side of the bag. Steam press the case being very careful not to melt the zipper. Use a pressing cloth to protect the fabric and zippers The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Optional 18 Apply the male #16 metal prong snap or #20 Kam Snap to the case centering over the snap placement stitching. Mark the placement of the female half on the pocket. Apply. Kam snap shown Carefully cut the opening in the buttonhole using your favorite method. 19 Take care not to cut through the front of your case! I slide an old credit card into that corner before cutting. Slip a key ring or key fob into the elastic loop. 20 Enjoy your walk! Kam Snap Buttonhole 14 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Adjustable Belt/Strap 1 Cut a length of ¾ or 1 wide webbing long enough to go around your waist/hips or to cross your body from the shoulder to the hip. I use 50 for an adjustable belt and 60 for a crossbody strap. 2 Loop one cut end of the webbing through one gate clip. Pull about 1 through and sew through both layers of webbing close to the cut end. Cut end Insert the other end through a 2 loop slider pull through. 3 4 Insert the cut end through the loop on the remaining gate clip. Pull about 15 through. 5 Push the cut end up through the slider from behind and then back down through the other side. It helps to pull the first layer of webbing up into a loop on top of the slider. 15 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts

Sew the cut end to the strap about 1 from the slider, close to the end, creating a closed loop. Cut end 6 Adjust the belt/strap around your waist or shoulder and clip both ends to the key ring. Enjoy! 7 16 The Sunshine 2015, Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts
