INSTRUCTIONS BFC716 QIH LEOPARD BAG This bag can be done in many ways! You can stitch it as I did the medium size bag shown at the end of this document (with the Orange trim). For this bag I embroidered all the sections. For the smaller bag with Green, I only embroidered the Leopard. The remaining sections are fabric only. You can combine some sections with embroidery and small with appropriate prints. If you prefer, you can use another design in place of the leopard. So you can make this bag with many variations and it can look totally different! PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING YOUR BAG! This set comes in three sizes. The designs for each size are as follows: PLEASE NOTE: The small size still requires a 5x7 hoop!!! The zipper pull is the exact same design in all three sizes The Small and Medium Leopard is the same design, The Leopard for the Large set is larger Small Designs Design 10 Design 11 Design 12 Medium Designs Design 22 Design 23 Design 24 Large Designs Design 34 Design 35 Design 36 Top of Bag Leopard Lower part of bag stitch three of this design Zipper Pull Top of Bag Leopard Lower part of bag stitch three of this design Zipper Pull Top of Bag Leopard Lower part of bag stitch three of this design Zipper Pull The sections of the bag are created by creating a sandwich of backing fabric, stabilizer, and quilt batting and top fabric all within the hoop. You then zig zag stitch and satin stitch the sections together to form the bag. The top fabrics can be all different as in a crazy patch or all the same fabric as shown in the samples. I used silks in both purses and these create a lot of *fuzzies* due to the fabric raveling so easily. The method below will get rid of these, but if you have not done something like this before I would recommend starting with good cotton fabrics that will stay in place and not ravel. The backing fabric can be anything you choose. It doesn t matter what it

looks like if you will line your bag, but if you are not going to add a lining, make it something that will look nice when the purse is opened. STEP I: STITCHING DESIGNS (please note these pictures are from the Set Crazy Quilt Hobo Bag) I stitched two of each design one for the front of the bag and one for the back. If preferred you can put a plain fabric back on your bag. Instructions on how to do this will follow this section. 1. Hoop your stabilizer. Stitch the first Color Stop on the design (Named Outline 1 in the Color Chart) I used the same thread as I was going to use for my final borders. 2. Cut a piece of your top fabric and place over the stitched line and stitch Color Stop 2 (Outline2 in the color Chart) You can use temporary adhesive, tape or just hold the fabric in place while the outline stitches.

. 3. Remove the hoop from the machine and carefully trim your top fabric next to the stitching line: 4. Stitch Color Stop 3 (Outline 1 in the Color Chart). This will stitch a zig zag stitch Now stitch the design, stopping before the last color stop.

5. Remove the hoop from the machine and turn over. Cut a piece of batting large enough to cover the design and adhere to the bottom of the hoop (temporary spray, tape, basting)

6. Cut a piece of backing fabric and apply on top of the batting. 7. Carefully return hoop to the machine and stitch the final border. Trim close to the outside edge of the border. I recommend waiting to trim until you are ready to sew the pieces together it will minimize the *fuzzies*. 8. Stitch each of the designs in this manner. CREATING THE SECTIONS WITHOUT EMBROIDERY Proceed as above, but skip through the design colors until the last color (called Satin Stitch in the Color Chart. STITCHING THE DESIGNS TOGETHER To give a nice smooth finish to the seams, I stitched all the pieces to a piece of tear away stabilizer:

Using the template as a guide to putting the designs together, lay the first two on the stabilizer and using a widely spaced zig zag, but the two edges together and stitch Continue adding all the designs with the zig zag stitch. Now, go over all the seams with a wide satin stitch. The stabilizer will keep the seam nice and flat while you do this. When you are finished, tear away the excess stabilizer. Press lightly on the back. Repeat for the back if you are using designs on both the front and back of your bag.

HINT: Before adding the satin stitch, use a permanent marker in the same color as your border and cover all the batting that might show: STITCHING THE LOWER BORDER: Stitch three of design 11 (small), 23 (medium) or 35 (large). Stitch these together as above separately from the top part of the bag. STITCHING LEOPARD The leopard is not done as a quilt in the hoop design. You stitch him on regular fabric and then create the *patch* with your regular sewing machine. Make sure your fabric is large enough so you can place the leopard where desired. After he is stitched, mark a rectangle on the fabric:

Make the rectangle the width of your bag: Small 12.8 inches, Medium 15 inches and Large 17.3 inches. (I recommend measuring your bag to make sure it hasn t pulled in and use the actual measurement) For the height, this can be your choice. I made the Medium bag 3.75 inches high and the Small bag 3.5 inches. I wanted my leopard to look like he was walking on the satin stitch border, so I marked the rectangle just a little below his feet. Stitch a zig zag just inside your outline Then go over this zig zag with satin stitch. Make sure the outer edge of the satin stitch touches your marked line.

Next, attach the leopard to the top and bottom of your bag. I didn t trim the top and bottom of the leopard and placed the bag sections on top and butting the satin stitch borders. This added more stability to the bag, but is optional. I first used a zig zag stitch, and then a satin stitch as for the other sections.

(Note that I had not yet stitched the satin stitch on the top section) ALTERNATIVE TO PATCHED BACK If you don t wish to have an embroidered back on your purse, use your finished front as a pattern and mark the outline on a piece of fabric you will use for the back. Put a backing fabric, a layer of stabilizer, batting and your outside fabric in a sandwich on your cutting table. Place the bag front on the top fabric and using a quilting marker that will disappear (or other marking method you prefer), trace the outline of the front on your fabric.

OPTIONAL: Before I marked the shape, I added quilting lines for stability and interest: Then I marked the outline and first stitched it with a zig zag and then a satin stitch as above for the leopard section. Trim close to the satin stitch border to make your purse back. You might prefer to use a heavy interfacing instead of batting for the back. The instructions are the same to assemble the bag whether you use a patched back or a solid back. ZIPPER ASSEMBLY Cut two strips of fabric the length across the top of your bag (I added some extra to be sure it was long enough) and the width you want the gusset plus.5 inch. Place the zipper upside down on the right side of the fabric strip, centering the teeth in the middle of the strip.

NOTE: Because I was using silk, I first fused a piece of regular cotton to the back of the silk for strength. Then fold your fabric strip in half and stitch along the edge of the zipper teeth from the right side of the zipper using a zipper foot: Repeat for the other strip:

For strength, cut a small rectangle of fabric, fold in half and stitch along one short edge and the long edge. Turn. Top stitch one of these to each end of the zipper: LINING Using your bag front as a pattern, cut two pieces of lining fabric, allowing for a seam allowance. Add pockets as desired by cutting a rectangle twice as high as you desired pocket and the width desired. Fold in half and stitch edges together leaving a small opening for turning. Turn and press. Pin in place to one lining piece and top stitch in place. Then stitch down from the top of the pocket to the bottom to create the separate pockets.

Cut a strip of fabric the desired width for your gusset (I made mine 3.5 inches on the medium bag) and the length to go around the bag from one top corner to the other. Stitch the gusset to the two lining pieces. ASSEMBLING THE BAG ATTACHING ZIPPER TO BAG To make it easier to assemble, I attached the zipper before adding the lining. After marking my seam line on the zipper assembly, I laid the back section of the bag on top so the edge of the bag lay along the line on the zipper and stitched a straight stitch down the middle of the satin stitch on the bag. Repeat for the other side of the bag:

The finished zipper: ATTACHING LINING TO THE TOP OF THE BAG You will sew the lining to the seam allowance of the zipper assembly. Holding the seam allowance away from the bag, place it on the top of the lining and stitch: Repeat for the other side. You will now have the lining attached to the zipper assembly and the bag, but the bag front and back are not yet sewn together and the ends of the lining and the zipper assembly are not stitched together. Now stitch a row of satin stitches along the top of the bag front and back:

From the inside, pull the zipper assembly end straight and lay the lining end on top of it and stitch: GUSSET AND STRAP These are made all in one piece. Measure the distance around your bag and add the desired length for your strap. Cut two strips of fabric this length and the width plus seam allowance you desire for your gusset. (This has to be the same width as your zipper assembly). Adding batting if desired, place the two strips right sides together and stitch down the long ends. Turn and press. If desired add quilting lines. I stitched three lines evenly spaced along the length of my strap and gusset. Stitch the two short ends together and press open. This seam will be on the bottom of your bag. Pin the strip starting at the bottom of the bag placing the seam of the strap in the center of the bag, continuing up the sides to the point where the zipper is attached. You want the edge of the strap to be just inside the edge

of the bag. Stitch with a straight stitch down the middle of the satin stitch on the bag. I did this from the strap side: Stitch a row of close satin stitches all around the bag from the place where the zipper assembly joins the bag. BAG BOTTOM SUPPORT To give a nice finish to the inside of your bag and add support for the bottom, cut two strips of a heavy material or interfacing (I used two layers of timtex). For dimensions, measure the width of the gusset at the bottom of the bag between the two satin stitch borders and the length across the bottom of your bag. Then cut a piece of lining fabric at least two inches bigger all around than your interfacing. Fuse this fabric to the top of the interfacing, then turn and fuse or stitch the edges of the fabric to the back of the interfacing:

Place the support inside the bag and press down, arranging the lining neatly around it. You can attach the support as I did by adding *feet* to your bag below, or with just a few hand stitches in each corner of the support going through to the outside of the bag. FEET Thread a needle with sturdy thread and knot. Put the needle through the support from the inside of the bag in one corner through to the outside of the bag. String 4 or 5 small beads, a large bead, 4 or 5 small beads and put the needle back through the bag to the inside. For added strength, put the needle back through to the outside and run your needle through the beads again. Bring the needle back to the inside and tie off. Repeat for the other 3 corners. Instead of beads, you can also use buttons. EMBELLISHMENT I added a crystal collar and chain leash on the leopard. I used a small size hot fix crystal for the collar. I stitched down one end of the chain by hand to the top of the collar. The other end I looped around the strap and opening one of the links, I closed the loop. You can also tack down the chain by hand in several places so it won t catch on things.
