Kindle Case with Pocket 3 An In-the-Hoop Project 2011, 2015 Peggy Severt, Pegboard Crafts Updated April Minor improvements. pegboard1@yahoo.com or peggy@pegboardcrafts.com (419) This case features a modified half circle flap with magnetic snap closure for the front pocket - a great place to store the cord and adapter. The back zips closed, keeping your device safe in a lightly padded enclosure. Optional quilting stitches on flap/front/back. Copyright. You are given license to use this design. All ownership remains with Pegboard Crafts. You may embroider these designs on items for personal use or for sale. You MAY NOT share, sell, or give away the stitch file or patterns, in whole or in part. It may not be included in any collection free or for sale. To do so is a violation of copyright law. Flap Lining batting 2 Fusible fleece 8 x x 5 7 x 5 K. Flap Lining Stabilizer 2 Mid-weight cutaway stabilizer 8 x x 5 7 x 5 1 You may substitute a very thin batting for the fusible fleece. 2 If not using fusible fleece on back of the flap lining fabric, cut the Flap Stabilizer out of scrap mid-weight stabilizer Suggested fabrics: Cottons or quilting cottons for flap, pocket and linings. Linings may also be made from regular lining fabric to help reduce bulk. Flap may also be made from faux suede or leather, as well as pleather. Batting: Pellon fleece, Warm and Natural, fusible fleece. 1 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Additional Materials All Sizes Tear-away or cutaway stabilizer 1 piece to fit hoop (for pattern) Mid-weight cutaway stabilizer (2 oz.) 3 pieces to fit in hoop (can substitute polymesh for front hooping) Magnetic snap for flap closure 9 zipper (#3 nylon skirt/dress zipper) ½ wide ribbon 5 for optional side tabs (May substitute finished fabric strips) Masking tape and/or washable glue stick Scotch tape or Dritz Wonder Tape double sided, water soluble, sew through tape. Embroidery thread and bobbin thread. I recommend using poly thread throughout this design. *Batting will make your case firmer than using just stabilizer alone. I prefer to use a thin, fusible fleece instead of regular batting. Adding batting to all pieces makes a very thick case and may not be advisable for single needle machines. It can cause the foot to ride too high to sew. Adding it to the back of only the FRONT (A) fabric will make the case quite substantial. Add fleece to the backs of POCKET (B), Flap Lining (H), and BACK (D) (in this order) if your machine can handle it. If using fusible fleece, pre-fuse it to the backs of the pieces before beginning project, except for FRONT batting. If using non-fusible fleece, remember to place it when you place the fabric during construction of the case. 2 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Special Precautions You will be hooping only the stabilizer. It needs to be tight in the hoop with no slippage. You do not want the project to start sagging part way through. You will be taking the hoop on and off the machine a number of times. Be very careful not to disturb the project in the hoop. Place the hoop on a flat surface while working. This will help keep the project from shifting in the hoop while you work. If you tape the pieces down, don t put the tape right against the seam allowance. Some machines do not behave well when the foot is running over tape. The foot will drag causing skipped stitches as well as broken threads and needles. You can tape across the corners instead of on the sides. Please stay with your machine at all times. Watch that the foot does not become caught in the fabric layers. If you must stop the machine and back up to redo a section of the design, remove the hoop first. Then back up to the desired position. If you return to the start of the color stop, be sure to advance the machine one stitch so the needle returns to the start position. Then and only then is it safe to return the hoop to the machine. If your machine foot adjusts height according to what is under it when dropped, move to the thickest part of the project and restart from that position. 3 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Flap Pattern You may print a paper template from your favorite software or stitch this pattern on mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Use it for marking the snap placement in 1 Flap and Pocket, Step 14 on page 9. If you can slowly drop your needle down to the surface of the fabric without penetrating it you can skip making the pattern and mark the snap placement in 1 Flap and Pocket, Step 6 on page 7 Hoop one piece mid-weight cutaway or tearaway stabilizer. Load the appropriate file for the Flap Pattern into your machine: Kindle 1 KND1_FLAP x 168mm 4.01 x 6.61 Place the hoop on the machine. Kindle 2 KND2_FLAP x 162mm 3.93 x 6.38 Kindle 3 KND3_FLAP x 142mm 3.61 x Stitch Color #1, the cutting lines for the flap pattern. These are the seam lines of the finished flap. 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the stabilizer from the hoop. 2C Cut the template out on the stitching lines. Lay aside. We will use this a bit later to mark the snap placement on the flap lining. Continue with 1 Flap and Pocket, page 5. Keep this template for future use. Label it Kindle# Pocket 3 Flap Template mark the small square, Snap Placement. 4 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
1 Flap and Pocket Hoop one piece mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. Load the appropriate pocket file into your machine: Kindle 1 KND1_Pckt3 198 x 294mm 7.8 x Kindle 2 KND2_Pckt3 192 x 290mm 7.56 x Kindle3 KND3_Pckt3 172 x 280mm 6.77 x Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline for the flap and for the pocket. The small triangles on each piece indicate the top of the piece. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 2B Place the Flap fabric (G) FACE UP over the placement stitching. All sides overlap the placement stitching by ¼ to ½. The small triangle indicates the top edge of the flap (straight edge). If the fabric is directional, place it so the print runs in the direction the triangle points. You may use a light layer of washable glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the fabric in place, keeping the tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. G 2C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #2, tacking the fabric down. 5 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
3 Optional: Stitch Color #3, the quilting stitches. Advance to the next color if you do not wish to quilt the flap. 4 Optional: Stitch Color #4, the faux topstitching around edge of flap. Advance to the next color if you do not wish to do the top stitching. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Place the Flap Lining (F), FACE DOWN, over the flap, matching raw edges. If the fabric is directional, place it so the print is upside down (bottom of design along edge with triangle). It will be right side up when the flap is opened. F 5B You may use a few pieces of tape to hold the fabric in place keeping it at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. If you did not use fusible fleece, place the Flap Lining Batting (J) over the Lining fabric, cut edges even. You may substitute the Flap Lining Stabilizer (K) for the fleece. This will firm up the lining and reinforce it for the snap. J or K 5C Tape all layers securely to the hooped stabilizer or to the hoop. You don t want it to shift while it stitches. 5D Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #5, the outer seam. 6 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
6 7A Do not stitch Color #6. It is another way to mark snap placement. Use only if you can slowly drop your needle down to the surface of the fabric without penetrating it. Use a pencil or fabric marker to mark the point where the needle touches the fabric. Remove the hoop from the machine and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Trim away any of the flap/lining fabric that covers the pocket placement line. 7B Fold the Pocket Fabric (B) in half, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, so it measures (8.75 x 7.5 /8.5 x 7 /7.75 x 6.5 ) Press the fold to crease it. B If not using fusible fleece, place the optional Pocket Batting (I) over the pocket placement stitches. The top of the batting should line up with the top stitching line of the pocket extend about ½ beyond the side and bottom stitching lines. 7C I 7 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Place the folded Pocket Fabric (B) over the placement stitching, with the fold along the top stitching line (marked with a triangle). You may use a light coating of washable glue stick on the stabilizer to hold the fabric in place. 7D The triangle indicates the top edge of the pocket. Position the print of your fabric accordingly. The two sides and the bottom should extend beyond the stitching lines approximately ½ on each edge. Fold B Right side 7E Unfold the pocket. The top half of the pocket will extend up over the flap. Do not trim the extra fabric. It will become the pocket lining. You may tape the edges along the lower half to hold fabric in place. If taping the fabric pieces in place be sure to keep all tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. Crease B Right Side 7F Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #7, tacking the fabric down. 8 Stitch Color #8, the optional quilting stitches. Advance to the next color if you do not wish to quilt the pocket. 9 Stitch Color #9, the optional faux topstitching. Advance to the next color if you do not want the topstitching. 8 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Stitch Color #10, the placement for the magnetic snap Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. 12 Separate the flap from the pocket, cutting ONLY the stabilizer at this time. Lay the pocket to one side. Turn the project over so you can see the stitches better. 13 Trim all layers close to the outer row of stitching on all edges. You can clip the curves to the inside seam line. This will help give a smoother curve once the flap is turned right side out. 14 If you could not mark the snap placement using the method outlined in Step 5, use the template made earlier to mark it on the fleece or stabilizer on the back of the FLAP LINING. Apply the male half of the magnetic snap to the Flap Lining. 15A Here I have the snap, the metal washer that came with it, and an extra reinforcement piece that I cut from an inexpensive kitchen cutting mat (or plastic milk jug). It is about 1 square. Trim the corners off and cut slits in it using the washer as a template. Lay the washer over the snap placement stitching. Using a pencil, mark the two slots onto the stabilizer. 15B With a sharp pair of scissors, carefully snip the stabilizer and the flap LINING on the marks, making slits just long enough for the prongs of the snap to go through. 9 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Slide the snap inside the flap and push the prongs through the slits in the lining to the stabilizer side. 15C Push the extra reinforcement over the prongs, followed by the metal washer. 15D Push the prongs down snugly against the washer. You can use a flat-bladed screwdriver or a pair of pliers to push them down. Place a couple layers of batting underneath the snap on the other side, and give it a couple of taps from the back with a small hammer. Press with iron to set seams. If you used faux leather or pleather, use a pressing cloth to protect it. You don t want it to melt now! 16 Turn right side out and press again. Lay aside. Carefully trim the excess stabilizer from around the outer edges of the pocket. 17 Trim it very close to the stitching at the pocket fold, taking care not to trim the fabric. There will be stabilizer under only ½ the pocket once trimmed. Do NOT trim the fabric at this time. Apply the female side of the magnetic snap to the front side of the pocket (the side with the placement stitching). 18A Here I have the snap, the metal washer that came with it, and an extra reinforcement piece (see page 9). 10 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Lay the washer over the snap placement stitching. Using a pencil, mark the two slots onto the stabilizer. 18B With a sharp pair of scissors, carefully snip the stabilizer and the pocket front/batting on the marks, making slits just long enough for the prongs of the snap to go through. Do NOT snip through the lining. Insert the snap from the front side of the pocket so the prongs come through on the stabilizer side. 18C Push the extra reinforcement over the prongs, followed by the metal washer. 18D Push the prongs down snugly against the washer. You can use a flat-bladed screwdriver or a pair of pliers to push them down. Place a couple layers of batting underneath the snap on the other side, and give it a couple of taps from the back with a small hammer. Fold the pocket WRONG SIDES TOGETHER, on the creased line. The snap is on the outside of the pocket. 19 Press the pocket. 20 Lay aside. Continue with instructions for Case Front, on page Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Case Front If you are going to place a monogram or other design above the pocket flap you should do so using your favorite editing software before loading the file in your machine. Center the design between the top and the dividing line for front top/bottom in the appropriate front file. Leave at least 1 of empty space between the design and all four stitched edges. It should stitch between colors 5 & 6. Hoop one piece mid-weight cutaway stabilizer (or polymesh). Load the appropriate Front file into your machine. Kindle 1 KND1_Front 198 x 282mm 7.8 x Kindle 2 KND2_Front 192 x 264mm 7.56 x Kindle3 KND3_Front 172 x 242mm 6.77 x 9.53 Place the hoop on the machine. Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. 1 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Extend the middle placement line out into the margins using a pen or pencil. 2B 12 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Place Front Batting (E) covering all placement stitching. If using fusible fleece, place it fusible side up in the hoop. 2C Place the Case Front Top (A) RIGHT SIDE UP over the top section of placement stitching, with one long raw edge along the middle line. Tape side and top edges to stabilizer. Be sure to keep all tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines A 2D 2E 3 Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #2, tacking the case front to the stabilizer/batting. Stitch Color #3, the optional quilting pattern. Advance to the next color if you do not wish to quilt the front. 4A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 13 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Place the prepared Flap over the Top Front with the lining FACE UP, and the raw edge to the bottom. Center the flap between the two short markings on the bottom seam line (in red circles). 4B Position the seam line on the reverse side of the flap (dashed red line) with the stitching line on the top front (in red circles). Tape the bottom and side edges of the flap in place securely, making sure the tape does not cover the stitching line across the flap. 4C Place the Front Bottom (D) fabric FACE DOWN over the flap and top front. The fabric will cover the top and flap, with one raw edge even with the raw edges of the flap and top front. If it has a one-way print, it should be upside down at this point. Tape the fabric in place along the bottom edge and sides. Do not cover the bottom stitching line. D Wrong side 4D Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #4, sewing the seam across the flap and front bottom. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Remove tape from the sides and lower edges. 14 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Fold the front bottom down over the stabilizer. Leave the flap laying flat on the front top. (See photo). Press the center seam with a small craft iron. 5B If you used fusible fleece in Step 2C (page 13), use a small iron to fuse it to the fabric now. Be careful not to touch your iron to the any visible fleece. If not using fusible fleece, tape the bottom corners of the bottom fabric in place, keeping the tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. 5C 6A Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #5, tacking the bottom of the case front in place. Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Place the prepared pocket FACE UP on top of the fabric in the hoop. (The snap is on front side.) 6B Look carefully at the placement stitching on the upper front. There are two small lines just above the seam line on both sides (red circles in image). Line the folded edge of the pocket up with these two short lines. Tape pocket in place, keeping the tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #6, stitching the pocket to the front. 6C If you need to stop the machine and go back to another point in the color stop during this step Remove the hoop from the machine first. Then move the needle back to the desired starting position before returning the hoop to the machine. This will keep the foot from crossing the middle of the project. It is VERY thick in the middle and the foot may run into it and throw the embroidery hoop position off-kilter. 7 Do NOT stitch Color #7. It is a marker to keep your machine from returning the foot to center where it may run into the magnetic snap. 15 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
8A Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. Trim excess stabilizer from the edges of the fabric. Do not trim the fabric around the outer edges. 8B Tuck the flap down inside the pocket. It comes a little too close to the outer seam line when it lies flat. Lay aside. Continue with the Case Back on page 17. 8C 16 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Case Back Zipper side Hoop one piece mid-weight cutaway stabilizer. I do not recommend using polymesh or other lightweight cutaway stabilizers for this side. Load the appropriate case Back file. Rotate the design in the hoop so the small triangle is at the top in a vertical hoop and to the right in a horizontal hoop. Kindle1 KND1_Back 198 x 282mm 7.8 x Kindle2 KND2_Back 192 x 264mm 7.56 x Stitch Color #1, the placement outline for the back. Kindle3 KND3_Back 172 x 242mm 6.77 x A Remove the hoop from the machine. Turn it over so the BACK of the hoop is FACE UP. Place on a flat surface. 2B Place one Lining (E) FACE UP, centered over the placement stitches. Use washable glue stick or masking tape to hold the lining in place, keeping the tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. Some machines do not like to stitch through tape. E 2C Turn the hoop over and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. 17 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Place optional Batting (H), covering all placement stitching. I recommend skipping the batting on this side if your machine has difficulty when stitching really thick layers. 2D H Place the Case Back (C) (fleece lined) FACE UP, centered over the placement stitching. Don t forget to lay down a piece of batting (H) first if using regular batting. 2E Tape edges in place keeping the tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. C Return the hoop to the machine. 2F 3 4A Make sure that the lining is still lying smooth underneath the hoop. Stitch Color #2, the fabric and lining to the stabilizer. It also stitches the placement stitching for the zipper. Stitch Color #3, the optional quilting pattern. Advance to the next color if you don t want to quilt the back. Remove the hoop from the machine and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Carefully trim away the fabric inside the smaller rectangle in the zipper placement area. Remove the batting from this small area too. 4B Do NOT trim into the stabilizer. You need it in there to help keep the zipper from shifting as it is stitched. 18 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
4C Turn the hoop over to the WRONG SIDE and place it on a flat surface. Carefully trim away the lining fabric from inside the smaller rectangle inside the zipper placement stitching. 4D Do NOT trim into the stabilizer. You need it in there to help keep the zipper from shifting as it is stitched. DO NOT put the zipper down yet! 4E Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #4, a zigzag stitching that covers the raw edges of the zipper opening. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. Place the zipper FACE UP, over the trimmed opening, centering the long edges between the outer placement stitching lines. 5B The metal pull tab should be to the left (vertical hoop) or to the top (horizontal hoop). Place it and the metal stop at the end of the zipper well outside the stitching lines so the foot and needle will not hit them. Use strips of scotch tape to hold the zipper in place along both long sides, catching just the edge. You may use Dritz Wonder Tape on the back of the zipper instead of the scotch tape method if you prefer. Tape the zipper pull tab down so it points away from the case. Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #5, the decorative stitching on the zipper. 5C Stop the machine at the end of the straight tackdown just as it starts to do the fancy stitch. Remove all of the scotch tape. Restart the machine and finish the fancy stitching. 19 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
6A Remove the hoop from the machine. Place it RIGHT SIDE UP on a flat surface. OPEN THE ZIPPER HALFWAY! 6B DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! Take a sharp pair of scissors and poke a small hole through the stabilizer showing in the zipper opening. This will make it easier to trim the backing away later. NOTE This is where you insert any options you wish to add into the side seams side tabs or wrist staps, etc. See page 23 for additional instructions. 6C Check that the zipper is open halfway. Place the prepared Case Front FACE DOWN on top of the Case Back. Be sure the flap is tucked inside the pocket and make it as flat as possible. Match the 4 corners on both pieces as closely as possible. Tape securely on all four edges keeping the tape at least ¼ away from the stitching lines. Want to see how I match the pieces up perfectly? Visit my blog at Front Wrong side 6E Place the remaining Lining (E) FACE UP on top of the Case Back, centering it over the Case Front. Tape securely on all four edges. Feel through the layers to make sure the metal tabs are at least ½ away from the outer stitching lines. E 20 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
6F Return the hoop to the machine. Did I mention to double check that the zipper is open halfway? Stitch Color #6. I usually match the thread to the outside fabric, not the lining so it isn t seen on the edges once the bag it turned right side out. It will go around once with a basting stitch. You can stop the machine if necessary and easily remove this round of stitches if you get a pucker or the fabric shifts 6G The second round of stitching is a regular length sewing stitch. The third round is a zigzag to finish the case seam. If you need to stop the machine and go back to another point in the color stop during this step Remove the hoop from the machine first. Then move the needle back to the desired starting position before returning the hoop to the machine. This will keep the foot from crossing the middle of the project. It is VERY thick in the middle and the foot may run into it and throw the embroidery hoop position off-kilter. 7 Do NOT stitch Color #7. It is a marker to keep your machine from returning the foot to center when the stitching is finshed. The stitching part is done. Remove the hoop from the machine and the case from the hoop. 8 One last time, check that the zipper is open halfway. It is too late to fix it after you trim! If you forgot to open it, carefully open the seam; push the zipper pull through to the inside, then stitch the case shut on your regular sewing machine. Trim away all excess fabric and stabilizer trimming as close you can to the zigzag stitching without cutting thru it. Cut right thru the zipper but don t use your best shears! Take this slowly. You may need to do it in several layers. The narrower your seam allowance, the better your curved seams will look without having to clip them. 9 If you used cording to add any optional wristlets or loops, do not trim the ends when trimming the fabric. that might ravel. Leave them at least ½ long and apply fray check to the ends. You can cut away the stitching at the corners that were for placement stitching, but do not cut into any of the zigzag stitches. The narrower your seam allowance, the better your curved seams will look without having to clip them. 21 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Trim away the excess stabilizer from the back of the zipper, starting in the slit you cut in the stabilizer earlier. Be very careful not to cut the zipper tape and don t snip any of the decorative stitches. 10 Tip: Find the zipper tab and push the point of your scissors or a seam ripper in at that point. It will protect your zipper tape from an accidental slit. 11 Steam press the stitching lines to set the seam. Use a pressing cloth if necessary to protect the fabric and zipper. Open the zipper the whole way Tip: If the zipper won t move, reach in and flip the tab upward. The zipper is locked when the tab is pointed down. It sometimes helps to push the zipper closed a bit and then push it open. Turn the case thru the opening in the zipper. Use a point turner to help turn the case and push the edges of the seams outward. Steam press the case being very careful not to melt the zipper. Use a pressing cloth to protect the fabric and zippers Voila! Great Job! Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
Here are a few suggestions for some extras you can add to your Kindle case. Add the side tabs and wrist strap between steps 6B and 6C on page 20. Optional Side Tabs Cut 2 pieces of ribbon approximately 2.5 long. Fold in half, right side out, cut edges together. Place one tab on both sides of the zipper, cut edges outside the tackdown lines, folded edge inside the lines. Tape ends in place. Optional Wrist Strap Cut a piece of cording the desired length. Fold cording in half, cut edges together. Place the cording with the cut edges outside the tackdown lines, looped end inside the lines. Tape ends in place. Keep the loop at least ½ from the top edge. You may place the loop on either side of the case. Flap Decorations Hand sew buttons, bows, buckles or other trims onto the flap after finishing and turning the case. 23 Kindle Case with Pocket , 2015 Pegboard Crafts
