1 SINGER Sewing Theme Greeting Card Use your sewing machine to express your personal style and creativity by making greeting cards. It s a unique way to send a message to someone special in your life and brighten their day. Make four or more cards and wrap them with ribbon as a gift set, or simply put in a picture frame to decorate a sewing room. Supplies listed below are for making one card, so adjust as need for the number of cards desired. Shopping List: Small scrap pieces of print and/or solid fabrics Small scrap pieces of non-woven fusible interfacing Small felt scrap Card stock paper (for main card, card front & spool ) Card stock paper (for sewing machine applique) All-purpose thread Glue stick for paper and for fabric Fine point permanent marker 7 length of medium rick-rack Pinking shears Ruler Hand sewing needle Paper cutting scissors Pencils for paper and fabric

2 What to Cut: Cut one piece of cardstock 8½" x 5½" (for the card front ) Using the patterns provided (see last page of these instructions), cut one sewing machine and one spool from the cardstock paper TIP: Draw the sewing machine shape onto the wrong side of the card stock, reversing the applique. By reversing the applique, no pen or pencil lines will show on the right side after cutting. Cut one piece of each fabric, each at least 3 square Cut three pieces fusible interfacing, each at least 2½" square Cut one tiny piece of red felt, about ⅜" square Cut one piece of rick-rack 6½" long Sewing Directions: TIP: Create a card front first. Then glue it to the card itself. This way, the wrong side of the card front is hidden from view by the card recipient. 1. Place one fusible interfacing square to the wrong side of each fabric square. Fuse, following interfacing manufacturer s directions. TIP: Adding interfacing to the fabrics before cutting provides more stability when sewing onto the cardstock. It also prevents raveling of the fabric on the finished card. 2. Cut a 2¼" square template of cardstock. Place this small square template on the interfacing side of each fabric square and draw around template on each fabric piece. 2

3 3. Trim the fabric squares with pinking shears, cutting close to the drawn line. This will give the pieces more interest. 4. Arrange the three trimmed fabric squares on the left side of the card front. Use a fabric glue stick to hold them in place. 5. Thread the top of the machine and bobbin with all-purpose thread. Machine stitch around each fabric square using a long straight stitch (stitch length set at about 3mm). TIP: Lengthen stitch when sewing on paper/cardstock. The machine needle makes holes in the paper, so if the stitches are too close together, they weaken the area and cause perforations in the paper. Sewing with a longer stitch length setting, approximately 3mm, will prevent perforation of the paper. TIP: Do not backstitch when sewing the fabric squares to the card front. Rather, pull the thread tails to the back side using an hand sewing needle, then tie together with an overhand knot. Trim the thread tails to about ¾" long for a cleaner and neater finish. 3

4 6. Apply a small amount of fabric glue onto one side of the rick-rack. Place the rick-rack onto the card front, close to the fabric squares, with the ends of the rick-rack going beyond the sides of the cardstock. Stitch down the center of the rick-rack with a straight stitch to secure it in place. 7. Wrap the ends of the rick-rack to the wrong side of the card front. Glue in place. TIP: When applying a trim that has a raw edge, always cut it longer than the size of the item you are applying it to. This will allow you to wrap the raw eges to the back side, concealing the raw edges on the card front and giving the card a more polished and neater look. 8. With a fine point marking pen, write your greeting on a piece of the cardstock. Trim piece to desired size for the card front. TIP: Write your greeting or message on a piece of cardstock first, then trim it to the size desired. That gives you more flexability to adjust the size and makes it easier to center the writing on the cardstock. 9. Position the greeting on card front. Glue in place to secure. 4

5 10. Set the machine for a zigzag stitch with medium-long width and length setting. Stitch around greeting piece, pivoting at the corners. Bring the thread tails to the back and secure the threads as shown in Step Place the sewing machine applique into position as desired on card front. Lightly draw a line indicating where the machine needle would be. 12. Remove applique and extend line slightly. Using silver metallic thread, straight stitch on line. Pull thread tails to back to secure. 13. Reposition the sewing machine applique over the needle. Glue the machine in place. 14. Glue the spool applique on machine applique. Add the felt piece to the paper spool (trim felt if necessary). Stitch over felt back and forth to resemble thread on the spool. 5

6 15. Fold a piece of cardstock in half to measure 8½" x 5½" to make a card. Glue the embellished card front to the main card, matching edges. Your design is complete!
