4 WHEN you add embellishments depends on WHAT embellishments you re adding. Stitch on both sides of the rick rack. Stitch over yarn with a zig-zag stitch using matching thread.

6 Adding Decorative Beads Decide where the bead is to be to be or not to be. Stick a straight pin into the top to mark the spot on the quilt back. Use a strong thread or a double thread and a needle (size 8-10 embroidery or beading needle) which will fit through the bead hole. Small seed beads or small bugle beads may require a very thin needle. Knot the thread and hide the knot in the layers of the quilt back near the pin. Poke the needle through the layers to your selected spot. Pull the thread through the bead. Hold the bead with one hand and stick the needle perpendicularly back into the quilt. If you leave extra thread the bead will slide on it. To make sure the bead is secure, sew through the bead at least 2 times.

7 If you are sewing several beads, make a knot or a backstitch after every 2-3 beads to secure them. You do not want a bead avalanche!

8 Long bugle beads have sharp ends that may cut through thread so always use a small round bead or a seed bead on each end of the bugle beads.

9 If you are sewing a bead on top of a button, it sometimes helps to first sew the button in place, then sew the bead on top.

11 Adding Decorative Beads It is easier to add Decorative beads before you add the Working Beads. Mark where you want the beads to be with a water erasable marker, a heat erasable Frixion pen, or a chalk marker.

12 Begin on one side, bury the knot in the bottom of the panel. Take the needle through the panel at the mark, through the beads and around the lowest bead. Then take the needle through the same beads again and back into the panel.

13 Take one stitch in the panel hiding the thread in the layers to the next mark. Repeat to sew the next bead group. In the same way sew beads to the lower edges of each panel.

14 Adding Working Beads Decide where your beads will be placed. Use a ruler to mark the center of the top panel. Then place marks every ½ out to the end of the center panel. Because the beads will be holding some weight, use the same size and the same number of beads on each bead strand. Use a heavier thread such as an upholstery thread or another strong thread.

15 Begin with the middle panel. If you are right handed, begin on the right side. Knot the thread and bury the knot on the back of the panel. Take the needle down through the top panel s lower edge, through 2 beads, and into the center panel at the mark on the far right side. Take a stitch in the lower panel and take the needle back up through the 2 beads and into the top panel. Travel the needle through the top panel to the next mark by hiding it between the layers. Repeat taking the needle down, through 2 beads, into lower panel, back through the beads, and into the top panel. Continue in this way across the panel. After every 3 or 4 bead strings, backstitch and knot to prevent that avalanche.
