1 Free Pattern Instructions Flower Stitch Foot Covered Buttons Add beautiful flowers and circular designs to your buttons with this creative foot. Even the most basic of stitches can become creative options. The Flower Stitch Foot makes it possible to stitch floral embellishments or eyelet type designs. You ll be delighted with the endless variety of designs you can create to accent buttons, projects, or even create your own embellished fabrics. Finished size: Approximate Finished Sizes: ¾", 1", 1⅛", or 1½" Supplies Needed: Flower Stitch Foot Variety of cotton fabrics Fusible lightweight interfacing, such as Pellon Easy- Shaper Interfacing Light tear-away stabilizer (fusible or non-fusible), such as Cotton Fix or Cotton Soft Stabilizer Variety of Madeira Rayon, Cotona, or Polyneon thread colors Instructions: 1. Understanding how the Flower Stitch Foot works: The Flower Stitch Foot is designed for low shank sewing machines with zigzag capabilities. A rotating disk advances one stitch with each click of the disk. Select from three size settings (+ to -) by moving the setting mark. The + side makes large flower circles which measures approximately 1". The middle makes medium flower circles which measures approximately ⅝". The - side makes smaller flower circles which measures approximately ½". A foam ring, located on the bottom of the foot, grips the fabric to provide even stitching. Optional: Create a Flower Stitch Design Book: Prepare the muslin for stitching: - Starch the fabric well using a spray starch or starch alternative. - Cut the stitch pages to measure approximately 6" x 8". - Add the fusible interfacing and tear-away stabilizer to the wrong side of the muslin fabric. Create stitch pages to test as many sewing machine stitches as desired: - Experiment with the utility stitches, decorative stitches, or hemstitches on the sewing machine. - Stitch two or three stitch types per page and include the pertinent information: * Stitch a three inch length of the original pattern with the standard presser foot. Next to the stitched pattern, write the pattern number from your machine using a permanent marking pen. * Continue to stitch the remaining original stitch types. 2 - Set the stitch width: this setting will vary with the stitch type, approximately You may need to test stitch the pattern to determine the correct stitch width. - Stitch length: does not apply, the length varies automatically with the stitch type. - Thread the machine and needle with Madeira Rayon, Cotona, or Polyneon thread: * To achieve heavier thread coverage use one of the following options: Option 1: Thread the machine with two spools of the same color thread, treating it as one heavier thread. A larger needle maybe needed, like a size 90/14 metallic embroidery needle or topstitching needle. Option 2: Use a heavier thread, like a 30 wt. Cotona or a topstitching thread. - Fill the bobbin with a lightweight bobbin thread. - Reduce the upper tension one or two numbers or notches. You may need to test stitch the pattern to determine the correct tension for the pattern and make note on your stitch page. Attaching the Flower Stitch Foot to your sewing machine: - Remove the standard presser foot. - Position the attachment lever of the Flower Stitch Foot over the needle clamp. Securely tighten the screw that attaches the foot to the presser bar, this will prevent the foot from shifting while it is stitching. Tighten screw Attachment lever over needle clamp - Lower the feed dogs. Stitch a sample of the stitch type in the smallest (-), medium, and largest (+) sizes using the Flower Stitch Foot: Note: A complete rotation is needed to complete a pattern and give the design an appealing look. One rotation is from the start of the design and ending at the same starting point. Some designs are completed in one rotation while others may take up to six rotations to complete the pattern. It is important to note the number of rotations needed for each pattern. - Place the stabilize muslin under the foot and lower the foot. - It is important not to backstitch or use a locking stitch to avoid the risk of damaging the foot. Instead, hold the needle thread lightly with one hand, then raise and lower the needle to pick up the bobbin thread. Stitch a few stitches to lock the threads. Then, cut away the excess threads. - Stitch at a slow to medium speed to create the pattern. - When the pattern is completed, stop with the needle -2- in the highest position. Raise the foot and remove the fabric from the machine, cutting the threads. Then, draw the needle thread to the wrong side of the fabric, knot threads, and clip the thread tails. - Once the stitching is complete, write the settings for the stitch width, tension, needle type, thread color, and the number of rotations used. See example below. Stitch type #: 1-19 Stitch width: 5.0 Needle type: Universal Thread type & color: Rayon 1061 Smallest 1X around Middle 1X around Largest 2X around 3. Select and prepare fabric for the covered buttons: Starch fabric well using a spray starch or starch alternative. - Let the fabric dry completely before cutting and stitching. Cut fabric, interfacing, and stabilizer: - From each selected cotton fabric, interfacing, and stabilizer cut one 4" square per button. Note: A 4" square is a generous size to work with, for any size covered button form (¾" to 1½"), and will fit securely under the Flower Stitch Foot. 4. Stitch button designs using one of the following methods: Option 1: Stitch a single design on the covered button fabric: - Interface the wrong side of the fabric square first with the fusible light-weight interfacing and then with a tear-away stabilizer to keep both the fabric and stitches smooth during stitching. 3 - Place a dot on your fabric with a fabric marking pen or pencil where you wish to start stitching. The Flower Stitch Foot stitches in a circle from this starting/stopping point. Use this method if you are centering your stitch design rather than randomly stitching them on fabric. Fabric right side Start and stop stitching - Raise your foot and slide your stabilized fabric under the foot and position the marked dot under the needle. Raise foot, then glide and position dot under the needle * Select a different style of stitch, for example a zigzag, a satin stitch, decorative or a utility stitch. * Adjust the size of the design, using the +, medium, or - markings on the Flower Stitch Foot. * Make the needed adjustments to the stitch width and tension. * Change the needle and thread color, if desired. Note: The Flower Stitch Design Book, in step 2, would be a handy reference source. - Stitch and complete the second or third design following the final steps of Option 1, pp Button Variations: Note: Designs will vary from machine to machine depending on the selection of stitches. To recreate one or more of our designs, choose a stitch style, on the sewing machine, closest to the ones shown below.
