1 SINGER Drawstring Pouch Drawstring bags can be used to store your favorite jewelry or trinkets, or even used as an alternative to gift wrapping. They are easy to make and can be created in various sizes. These instructions are for a small bag, embellished with stitches from your machine. Have fun experimenting with different fabrics, decorative stitches, and trims! The approximate finished size of the bag is 5 x 5. Shopping List: ¼ yard fabric 1¼ yard satin ribbon or cord for ties Tear-away stabilizer All-purpose thread Machine embroidery thread Bobbin thread Satin foot Water soluble fabric marker Ruler Bodkin or large safety pin

2 Sewing Directions: 1. Cut a 6 x 16 rectangle from the fabric. 2. Fold the fabric in half, bringing short ends together. Press the fold to crease the center line. Open up the fabric and lay it flat. 3. Using the water soluble fabric marker and ruler, mark a line parallel to and 1 from each side of center line. Centerline Mark a line 1 from each side of the 4. To prepare for embellishing the fabric with decorative stitches, fill the bobbin with the bobbinfil thread and insert it into the machine. Thread the top of the machine with the machine embroidery thread. Attach the Satin Foot to the machine. 5. This bag features stitches that can be elongated to embellish the bag. To see which stitches can be elongated, see the Pattern Chart on inside the machine cover or check your machine manual. The stitches which can be elongated are marked with x5 underneath them. To access these stitches press the Decorative & Letter Stitch Button. Decorative & Letter Button For the bag in the photo, Stitch #16 was used. Once you ve selected the stitch, press the Edit Button. The LCD will change to the editing mode. Press the Function Button directly under the elongation mark, (symbol with the x1) to elongate the stitch (the stitch will elongate five times). 2

3 6. The first row of stitching is the x5 size. (There will be a total of five rows of stitching used to create the border at the bottom of the bag, alternating the size of the stitches in each row x2 and x5.) 1 st Row x 5 2 nd Row x2 3 rd Row x 5 4 th Row x 2 5 th Row x5 Beginning with the x5 elongation, start stitching along one of the lines marked from Step #3. Stitch all the way across the fabric. Hint: Place a piece of tear-away stabilizer underneath the fabric to make the fabric more stable during the decorative stitching process. Remove the stabilizer when the stitching is complete. Start stitching along one of the lines. To make the next row, move the foot over to the edge of the first row and stitch, using the first row as a guideline. To make the second row, first change the size of the stitch to x2 (press the Edit Button and select x2). Position the edge of the presser foot alongside the first row of stitching, then stitch to create another row, using the first row as a guide. Continue sewing the rows in this same manner until all five rows are completed, alternating between the x2 and the x5 sizes. When the five rows are completed, rotate the fabric and repeat the process on the other side of the centerline. Remove the stabilizer and press. 3

4 7. To construct the bag, first thread both the top and the bobbin with the all-purpose thread and attach the General Purpose Foot. Select a straight stitch. With right sides together, fold the fabric in half, bringing the short ends together, having raw edges and decorative stitching row even. Place a pin 3½ from top edges on each side. Place pin 3½ from Top edge. Wrong side of fabric Using a ½ seam, stitch the sides from the pin to the bottom edge. Press open the seams allowances, pressing under the seam allowance above the stitching. 8. On the outside, topstitch about ⅛ around the opening (pressed under seam allowances). Sew seam allowance about 1/8 from edges 4

5 9. To make the casings for the drawstring ribbons, press under ½ on top edges. Fold under again bringing folded edge to the top of the opening seam (about 1½ ). Press. Pin. Stitch close to the folded edge. Then stitch again ½ from the previous line to form the casing. To form casing, stitch close to folded edge. Stitch again ½ from first row of stitching. 10. Thread the ribbon through the casing opening at the sides using the bodkin or large safety pin. Use two lengths of ribbon, one going through an opening, going all the way through, exiting through the same opening; and the other going through the remaining opening, and exiting through that same opening. Tie a knot to secure the ends.
