1 Sewing Pattern Ruffle Apron By: Ashley Hough This ruffle front apron is the perfect accessory for the sewing room or the kitchen. Front pockets allow you to easily keep marking pencils, snips, spoons or recipe cards at hand, and having the pockets on the upper front rather than the lower still allows you to easily sit at a sewing machine. 2 Supplies: TOOLS REQUIRED: Here are the materials and supplies you ll need to complete this project: ½ yard of 3 coordinating fabrics (2) 16 squares of coordinating fabric (2) 21 x28 rectangles of fabric (will be used as a background for the ruffles and will not be seen on the right side of the apron) 16 square of medium weight fusible interfacing 5 of ¾ elastic Cutting From each of the three coordinating fabrics, cut two strips that are 6 by the width of the fabric. Figure 1 12" From the remaining fabric of one of the coordinating fabrics, cut two 6 x 7 rectangles for the large front pocket. From the same fabric, cut four 3 x 13 strips for the straps. From the remaining fabric of one of the other two coordinating fabrics, cut two 3 x 27 strips for the ties and two 1 ¾ x 9 strips for the elastic cover. From the remaining fabric of the last coordinating fabric, cut two 3 x 27 strips for the ties and two 3 x 6 rectangles for the small front pocket. 15" 10" From the 16 squares of coordinating fabric, cut two upper apron pieces that are 12 across at the top, 15 across at the bottom and 10 tall (Fig. 1). From the 16 square of fusible interfacing, cut one upper apron piece the same size and shape as the fabric. NationalSewingCircle.com Page 2

Figure 3 2" in from edge Figure 4 Align the 6 x 7 large front pocket rectangles with right sides together. Stitch the perimeter, leaving a 2-3 opening along one side for turning. Clip the corners (Fig. 2), then turn right side out and press, pressing under the turning opening. Align the 3 x 6 small front pocket rectangles with right sides together. Stitch the perimeter, leaving a 2-3 opening along one side for turning. Clip the corners, then turn right side out and press, pressing under the turning opening. On the interfaced upper apron piece, position the pockets next to each other 2 down from the upper edge and 2 in from each side, measuring from the upper edge of the pocket (Fig. 3). Stich the pocket in place 1 8 from the edge along the sides and bottom of each pocket. Ensure that the turning opening is along one of the edges being stitched. Press under ½ along the upper edge of both upper apron pieces. Align the upper apron pieces with right sides together and stitch along both sides (Fig. 4). Turn right side out and press. 4 Press under ½ along one short end of each 3 x 13 strip of fabric for the straps. Align two strap pieces with rights sides together, matching folded edges together and raw edges together and stitch both long sides. Turn right side out and press. Repeat with the remaining two strap pieces. Strap Raw s Covered Elastic Figure 5 Figure 6 Align the 1 ¾ x 9 strips of fabric for the elastic cover with right sides together. Stitch both long sides, then turn right side out and press. Slide the 5 length of elastic into the elastic cover. Bunch the fabric over the elastic until the raw edges of the fabric line up with the ends of the elastic; baste in place. Insert and center one raw edge of the covered elastic into the folded edge of one strap by ½ (Fig. 5). Stitch in place ¼ from the folded edge. Repeat to attach the remaining strap to the other end of the elastic. Strap At the edges of the folded upper apron pieces, insert the raw strap ends by ½ (Fig. 6). Topstitch along the entire upper edge. Align two different colored 3 x 27 strips of fabric for the ties with right sides together. Stitch both long ends and one short end. 5 } 2-1/2" 2-1/2" } Figure 7 Repeat with the remaining two 3 x 27 ties. Align the two 21 x 28 fabric rectangles with right sides together. Stitch along one long side and both short sides, beginning and ending the stitching 2 ½ from the raw edges (Fig. 7). Clip corners, then turn right side out and press. Along the upper, unstitched edges fold under and press ½. Upper Apron Figure 8 Insert and center the upper apron into the folded edge of the lower rectangle by ½ ; pin in place. Along the upper unstitched sides of the lower rectangle, insert the raw edges of the ties by ½ ; pin in place. Stitch ¼ from the edge along the unstitched sides and upper edge to secure the upper apron and ties in place (Fig. 8). Along one long edge of each ruffle, fold under and press ¼. Lower Rectangle Ties Along the remaining long edge and both short edges of each ruffle, double fold and press ½ then stitch in place. Lengthen your stitch length to as long as possible, then, leaving a long thread tail at the beginning and end and not backstitching, stitch approximately 3 8 from the folded edge of each ruffle. Pull on the bobbin thread of each ruffle to gather the strips until they are 27 long, the width of the lower apron rectangle. NationalSewingCircle.com Page 5

Stitch in place 1 8 from upper edge and 3 8 from upper edge and then remove gathering thread. Repeat to attach the remaining ruffles at 12 ½ from upper edge, 9 ½ from upper edge 6 ½ from upper edge, 3 ½ from upper edge and at the upper edge of the lower rectangle.
