1 SINGER Embellished Curtain Panel This curtain panel has an accent border, embellished with rows of decorative stitches. Experiment with various thread colors and stitch patterns to find the just the right combination for your home décor. Calculating Fabric Amounts Needed: 1. Determine the amount of MAIN fabric needed by following steps 2-4. (Measurements used in these calculations are based on the curtain panel shown in photo.

2 Calculating Fabric Amounts Needed: 1. Determine the amount of MAIN fabric needed by following steps 2-4. (Measurements used in these calculations are based on the curtain panel shown in photo. Adjust as needed for your particular window size). 2. Measure the width of the window frame, or measure the curtain rod if the rod is wider than the window frame. 3. Multiply the window width measurement by 2½, which allows for the fullness of the curtains once they are placed on the curtain rod when you are finished. For example: width of rod/window frame = 40, so 40 x 2½ = Divide the 100 by the width of the fabric you are using. For example, if your fabric width is 42, then = Round the 2.38 up to the next whole number (in the case of our example, 3). This means you will need 3 lengths of 42 fabric to create a 100 wide curtain. (see diagram in Cutting Directions for reference) 5. The ACCENT fabric panel for the curtain shown in the photo has a finished depth of 5. The hem is folded up, which doubles that number to 10. After allowing for the two ¼ seam allowances that will be needed, the final depth of the ACCENT fabric piece is now 10½. To determine the total amount of ACCENT fabric needed, multiply the depth needed (10½ ) by the number calculated in step 4 (in the case of our example, 3). This means 10½ x 3 = 31½. Round up to the next ⅛-yard increment, which means you will need one yard of accent fabric. 6. Measure the height you want your finished curtain panel to be by measuring from the top of the curtain rod to the length desired. (Height of the panel shown in photo is 25.) Cutting Directions: TIP: The fabrics used for the main curtain and accent should be similar to one another in type or weight, so one fabric doesn t overpower the other or cause the curtains to hang improperly. From the MAIN fabric: 1. Cut the fabric into three 25 x Width-of-Fabric pieces 2

Finish the seam as in Step 1. Press. 3. Cut the width of the panel to the measurement for your curtain width you determined in steps 1-4.

3 From the ACCENT fabric: 1. Cut the accent fabric into three 10½ by Width-of-Fabric pieces. Sewing Directions: 1. Sew two of the MAIN fabric panels together at one 25 side using a ¾ seam allowance. Finish the seam with a zig-zag or overedge stitch, or trim with pinking shears. Press. 2. Sew the remaining MAIN fabric panel to the seamed panel at one of the 25 sides using a ¾ seam allowance. Finish the seam as in Step 1. Press. 3. Cut the width of the panel to the measurement for your curtain width you determined in steps 1-4. For our example: cut to measure 100 in total width. Trim the excess evenly at both sides so that the seams in the fabric remain centered in your curtain panel. 3

4 4. Prepare the ACCENT fabric in the same manner. 5. Fold the 10½ ACCENT fabric, wrong sides together lengthwise, and press a lengthwise crease. 6. Open the ACCENT fabric section back up to prepare for decorative stitching. You will stitch on only one side of the strip. Using a ruler and fabric marking pen, draw stitching guidelines on the fabric where you want to sew decorative stitches. crease 7. Using your desired stitches, sew multiple rows of decorative stitching. Press when all decorative stitching is finished. If stabilizer was used, remove any excess stabilizer. Tip: Experiment on a scrap fabric first to determine the thread colors and stitches you want to use for decorating the accent fabric. You can have threads contrast, or do a more tonal effect for subtle texture, like shown in the photo. Also, it may be necessary to apply a light weight tear-away stabilizer to the back side of the accent fabric, depending on the density of the stitch patterns to be sewn. This will help prevent stitches from puckering while you sew. 8. Fold the embellished ACCENT fabric piece once again along the long crease. Sew the long raw edges of the accent fabric to the main fabric panel at the lower 100 edge of the MAIN panel using a ¼ seam. Finish the raw edges with your machine's overedge or zig-zag stitch. 9. Hem the sides of the curtain ½. 4

The next step in creating the rod pocket is to stitch the rod pocket section 1½ down from the top, folded edge. 12. Press the curtain and hang on the rod!

For the first step in creating the rod pocket, sew a 4½ hem in the upper edge of the panel and topstitch. 4 hem depth, with ½ turned under (Closer view) 4 hem, sew a row of stitching 1½ down from top edge 11. The next step in creating the rod pocket is to stitch the rod pocket section 1½ down from the top, folded edge. 12. Press the curtain and hang on the rod! Enjoy your freshly decorated space.
