1 2809 Applique the Easy Way With Patrick Lose Patrick Lose representing the Warm Company shared a number of his delightful appliqué patterns with America Sews viewers. Patrick is a designer with a number of creative inspirations for sewers and quilters including books, fabric lines, embroidery collections and patterns. Patrick is known for his whimsical character holiday designs. He brought a number of quilted wall hangings to decorate the America Sews set including You Better Watch Out which keeps kids on their toes during the holidays! The Merry wall hanging is created with raw edge appliqué! For the Halloween season, a favorite is Frank and Drac, Happy Haunting. The welcome banner features Gus the cat also known as Patrick s cat. The Gingerbread collection has a fun, homespun look. Patrick loves designing fabrics and patterns sewers and quilters enjoy. 2 Patrick shared a few basics for easy appliqué. Print out the paper pattern then trace the pattern onto Steam-A-Seam Light. Trace onto the paper side. Patrick always gives the patterns in reverse for this reason. Slide the Bright Light under your Sew Steady Acrylic Table to make a light box for tracing your pattern. Remove the paper from the untraced side and fuse the traced Steam- A-Seam to the wrong side of the applique fabric. Cut out the pieces and peel off the paper backing. Using the Sew Steady Acrylic Table as a light box, transfer the feature lines to the right side of the fabric. Fuse the pieces onto the background fabric. Patrick then sandwiches the fused background fabric with Warm Cotton Batting or Insulbright and a backing fabric. Use the Insulbright for placemats and tablemats that will be subject to the heat of warm plates or pots. Select the straight stretch stitch to stitch the quilting lines. For the satin stitch, select a B foot or Open Toe Foot. These feet have a tunnel on the underside to feed smoothly over the build up of thread created with a satin stitch. Select a pre-programmed Satin Stitch F3- F5 on Husqvarna Viking or on other machines select a zigzag stitch at a very short stitch length ( ) and always test sew this on a scrap. Patrick likes a narrow 2.5 width stitch. Once you have set your Satin Stitch, if your machine has a Favorites menu save it for the future. You can adjust the length of any of the table runners as you make them so they are the right size for your table or counter. Patrick usually creates placemats to coordinate with his table runners. Patrick quilts his runners and placemats first using Warm and Natural Batting and then stitches the appliqué. He loves to design for kids and loves to create these projects with young people of all ages. Patrick designed and included the instructions for the Good Morning Placemat especially for America Sews. Patrick loves the bright colors, the turquoise, orange and yellow. Good Morning Placemat When you are ready to stitch Patrick does not use stabilizer because the layers and batting will stabilize the fabric for stitching. Mark the stitching lines in the sky, going through the rays. Start at the center and go out. Thread with Robison Anton Twister Tweed or thread of your choice and use bobbin thread in the bobbin. Sue likes to wind her own bobbins and uses one color of the watercolor bobbins, for all her light weight thread. Then when she grabs a bobbin with white thread, she knows if it is regular sewing weight or light weight bobbin thread. Fabrics are Satinesque by Patrick Lose for Robert Kaufman Fusible web is Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 by Warm Company Quilting thread is Swirling Sensation (Spicy Pumpkin) by Robison Anton Satin stitching thread is 40 wt. Robison Anton rayon (Black). 2
3 Materials: Fat quarter or 15 x 19 Blue fabric for placemat top ¼ yd Orange for binding and sun rays appliqués 6 x 11 Yellow for sun 2 x 4 White for sun eyes 1 x 1 scrap Black for sun pupils Fat quarter or 15 x 19 fabric of choice for backing 12 x 14 Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive Cutting: 1. From the blue fabric, cut a 14 x 18 rectangle for the top of the placemat. 2. From the orange fabric, cut two 2½ wide strips for each placemat s binding from selvage to selvage. Fusible Appliqué: All appliqué templates are included. They re printed actual size and reversed for tracing onto fusible web. 1. Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over each appliqué template and trace with the number indicated onto the paper side. Be sure to trace dashed placement and stitching lines also. Leave approximately ⅛ cutting space around each piece or ¼ between pieces. 2. Use paper cutting scissors to cut out all of the pieces approximately ⅛ outside the traced lines. 3. Following manufacturer s instructions for fusing, fuse the traced template pieces, paper side up, onto the wrong side of the fabrics you ve chosen for your appliqués. Don t fuse until all pieces are arranged to fit on the fabrics. 4. Cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced lines. Be sure to transfer placement or stitching detail lines to the right side of the appliqués before removing the paper. 5. Arrange the appliqués on the background fabric to create the sun, removing the paper backing as you proceed. When you are satisfied with the positioning, fuse everything in place according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the fusible web. Quilting and Satin Stitch Appliqué If you re not comfortable with satin stitching, practice on scraps until you are comfortable with pivoting at corners and going around tighter curves. With a little practice, it doesn t take long before you re moving quickly around the appliqué pieces. Refer to the General Satin Stitching Tips on page 2 before you begin stitching. 1. Cut your backing and batting a little bit larger than the placemat (quilt top) on all sides. With wrong sides together, sandwich the batting between the quilt top and backing. Be sure that the quilt top is centered over the backing so that the backing extends beyond the top on all sides. Pin or baste through the layers to stabilize. 2. Begin quilting by stitching the lines or rays of the sun onto the placemat top through all layers. Try a Straight Stretch Stitch that resembles an embroidery back-stitch. 3. To finish the quilting and secure the appliqués, satin stitch around the pieces and any detail lines in the sun s face. To satin stitch, select a fairly narrow zigzag stitch (2.5) and keep your stitch length as close as possible. Stitch over the raw edges of the fused appliqués so that none of the raw edges show. Begin by stitching around the orange rays. Then, stitch around the sun. Fnish by stitching around the eyes and adding the nose and smile. I dropped the feed dogs and used free-motion stitching to secure the pupils, starting in the center of each pupil and stitching outward in a spiral to the raw edges. Satin stitching around them isn t necessary. Binding and Finishing 1. Right sides together, use diagonal seams to join the binding strips as in Illustration A. Trim the seam allowances and press the seams open. Illustration A 3
4 2. As in Illustration B, fold one end of the strip at a 45 degree angle to create a point and press. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and the long raw edges aligned. Press. 4. Fold up the binding, as shown in Illustration D, and finger crease the fold. Fold Illustration B 3. Referring to Illustration C, place the folded binding strip on one edge of the mat, aligning the raw edges of the mat and the binding. Snap on the 1/4 Pieceng Foot and stitch through all the layers using a ¼ seam allowance. Stop stitching ¼ from the corner. Pivot and stitch a diagonal line to the corner as shown in the Illustration C detail. Backstitch at least 2 stitches, remove the mat from the machine, and clip the threads. Illustration C Illustration D 5. Holding the creased fold in place, fold the binding down as in Illustration E and align the raw edges with the next side of the mat. Start stitching again at the corner, through all of the layers. Stitch around the entire mat, treating each corner as you did the first. 6. When you return Illustration E to where you started, stitch the binding past the second angled fold about a half inch. Backstitch and clip the threads. Cut off the excess binding. 7. Turn the binding over the mat edge, aligning the fold of the binding with the machine stitching you just finished. Illustration C detail Thanks to our Underwriter: 8. Sew the binding onto the backing. You can do this by machine, from the front, or by hand. In either case, miter the corners on the back side of the quilt also. If you choose to stitch the binding to the back by machine, lap the fold over the seam line used to attach the binding to the front. Then, stitch as close to the binding seam as possible from the front, catching the overlapped binding fold on the back. Enjoy!
