2 The new shapes in this year's challenge allowed us to think outside the box. What if we could design a row that could be used for more than a quilt layout? While contemplating such an option a rerun started up in the background - you guessed it "Happy Days". We hope our row brings happy days to you. The Folks at Thread Loft. General Instructions: Read all directions before attempting to construct this pattern. Press all fabric with spray starch, sizing, or Best Press using a steam setting. Doing so pre-shrinks the fabric and gives extra stability. Unless otherwise stated seam allowances are 1/4". Cutting instructions refer to WOF (width of fabric). This terminology implies a strip cut from selvedge to selvedge. In the case of a purchased kit, WOF means the longest possible. Embroidery or fabric painting can be used in this year's row. The official Thread Loft row incorporates the clock with flying pigs at 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. If a kit is purchased the Thread Loft logo is in the 12 o'clock position. The remainder is a musical staff with notes and the Colorado "C" with sunshine in the center. Cutting Instructions: Background Fabric: Cut one 18 1/2" square Black Fabric: Cut 7: musical notes Cut 1: treble clef Cut 1: repeat sign Cut 1: minute hand Cut 1: hour hand Pink Fabric: Cut 3: pigs (if kit cut 2 pigs) Yellow Fabric: Cut 1: sun Cut 5: rays Pink Polka Dot or Wing Fabric Cut 3: Wings (if kit cut 2 wings) A "pie" template has been included in the pattern. The pie template is a 30 wedge to use for marking the clock and staff on the background fabric. Press together 2 pieces of 8 1/2" x 11" freezer paper (plastic sides together). Copy the pie template onto the freezer paper (the freezer 2

3 paper will run through a printer). Cut around the outside lines of the pie template. (An exacto knife and ruler works well.) Optionally a protractor and compass can be used in place of the wedge but the wedge works well enough. Marking the background: Find and mark the center of the background fabric. The mark should be a + sign marking both the horizontal and vertical centers. Position the wedge with the point nestled in the corner of the + sign and one straight side is aligned with the "12 o'clock" position. Use chalk or other type of fabric pen or pencil that the mark can be removed and trace the arc along the top and the along the 12 o'clock straight side. Realign the wedge along the straight line and repeat until all 12 positions and a circle has been created. Use the straight side of the wedge or a ruler to mark the beginning and end of the musical staff. To do so, move the wedge (ruler) so that it is a 1/2" to the left of the one o'clock position and trace a straight line. Move the wedge or ruler so that it is 1/2" to the right of the 11 o'clock position and draw a straight line. Cut off the top of the wedge to the next curved line. Again line the wedge with straight edge at the clock positions and trace the arc until the next circle has been created. Repeat until 5 circles have been traced onto the background fabric. To make the musical staff: Use permanent paint or ink to draw the musical staff OR hand or machine embroider the musical staff. Refer to the picture for beginning and end. Finishing: Fuse and appliqué the sun and rays in the center before adding the clock hands. Position the treble clef sign in the one o'clock position. Position a pig and wings (or logo) in the 12 o'clock position. Position a pig and wings in the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions. Position the repeat in the 11 o'clock position. Position musical notes in the remaining clock positions. Fuse and appliqué. 3

Mark and applique as per the pattern instructions EXCEPT: Do NOT use the minute and hour hands. Those will come from clock kit Use raw edge straight stitch for applique or simply fuse. Note: the Peltex will be very stiff so the piece will not easily fold to machine applique. It will fit in a small throat machine when using only the straight stitch. Center backing onto second Peltex square and fuse. Center clock Peltex side to backing Peltex side (Peltex to Peltex OR Wrong Sides Together) and fuse. 1

7 The edges of the backing can be turned under on the front side (self binding) and sewn down. The corners do not have to be mitered. This is difficult with the Peltex layers. Optionally, the backing can be trimmed and a traditional binding used to finish the edges. Using the 1/4" punch, punch a hole in the center where the clock center will be extend to the front side. If a punch is not available, carefully poke a hole in the center and using small sharp scissors, make little snips from the center out like a spokes radiating from a wagon wheel. Try putting the clock enter through. If it is too small, snip fused fabrics from center. Repeat until clock fits. Follow directions on clock works for attaching hands. Position beads on each corner of the back of clock so it is level. Use a hot glue gun to attach to the back. 2
