The patches in the cutting list have larger than normal seam allowance added around all pieces to allow for foundation piecing. Label all pieces with the letter shown. From white on white print: Cut 4 rectangles 4 x 5 (A) Cut 4 rectangles 2 x 4 (B) Cut 8 rectangles 2-1/2 x 4 (C, E) Cut 1 square 4 x 4 ; cut on both diagonals to make 4 white triangles. () From light blue batik: Cut 4 rectangles 2-1/2 x 7 (H) Cut 4 squares 2 x 2 ; cut once on the diagonal to make 8 triangles () Cut 4 rectangles 2 x 3 (L) From medium blue batik: Cut 8 squares 2 x 2 () From medium dark blue batik: Cut 4 each of applique templates and N. From dark blue batik: Cut 8 45 diamonds from a 2-1/2 x 30 strip (F, J) 3-1/2 F/J Cut 2 squares 2 x 2 ; cut once on the diagonal to make 4 triangles () Cut 1 square 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 (K) nstructions: Print 1 copy of the 4-page foundation pattern on light-weight paper, velum, or newsprint. Check the 1 test squares on each pattern page to be sure that the foundations have printed out at 100%. Even the tiniest error will decrease the overall size of the completed block. 2 Block 10 Winter Sky Star Label each foundation pattern with the fabric color for each patch. Remember that foundation patterns are reversed! So the printed side of the pattern will be the back of the block. Piece all similar foundations at one time, chain piecing using the pre-cut patches. Pin the fabric right side up to the unprinted side of the foundation, covering the entire patch. Sew on the printed side of the foundation. (This pattern assumes you know how to foundation piece. f you are new to foundation piecing, please watch one of the many excellent You Tube video demos on the technique before beginning. Here are some links: Connecting Threads: 61.html; and another example on my blog: Piece each foundation section, pressing as you go. When all sections are pieced, trim the foundation on the outer (light) cutting lines. You should have a full 1/4 seam allowance on all sides from the inner (dark) sewing lines. Begin by piecing the four units of the Section 1 foundation pattern. Use the notes on the pattern and the cutting list on page 1. Trim each part on the cutting lines. Join units F to unit matching corners and seams. Press the seam to one side and remove the paper in the seam allowance. o this after sewing each seam to reduce bulk. Leave the paper in place on the rest of the unit to guide your sewing. Section 1 Units Fair sles Block of the onth 255 Join the corner N unit to unit. Press seam to one side and remove paper in the seam allowance. Join units F to units N matching seams and corners. Press and remove paper in the seam allowance. Section 1 is complete. 3 Arrange the four Sections in a square with the K square in the center. Sew the K square to the bottom of Section 1 template H with a partial seam starting at the outside edge and stopping about 1/2 from the other end (see the red dot in drawing at right). Sew Section 4 to the right of Section 3. Sew Section 2 to the top of Section 4. K Finally, join Sections 1 and 2 and finish sewing the partial seam between Section 1 and square K. Remove all the paper from the back of the block. Press the block and trim to 12-1/2 x 12-1/2 square. Section 1 Trace Templates and N onto the paper side of your fusible web. Cut out around the traced templates. Lightly fuse the web to the back of your medium dark blue batik fabric. Cut out on the traced lines. Remove the paper from the fusible web and position the and N templates on the finished side of the block s corners. When satisfied with their placement fuse the applique in place following the guidelines for your fusible product. Place a sheet of stabilizer on the back of the block and blanket stitch or satin stitch the edges of your applique through the block and the stabilizer using matching thread.
