1 2018 Block of the Month Month 1 Block: Red Roses Block size: 16 square (finished) Pieced background and appliqued flower wreath Copyright 2018 Morning Glory Designs, all rights reserved Fabric 1: Red = 1/4 yard (block & applique) Fabric 2: Pink = 1/8 yard Fabric 3: White = 3/8 yard Fabric 4: Green = 1/8 yard (applique) Fabric 5: Dark red = 1/8 yard (applique) 2-1/2 squares Cutting List: Fabric 1 cut 12 squares 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 Fabric 2 cut 12 squares 3 x 3 Fabric 3 cut 12 squares 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 Fabric 3 cut 12 squares 3 x 3 Fabric 3 cut 1 square 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 Instructions: 3 squares Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Place a pink and white 3 square right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew 1/4 from both sides of the line. Cut on the original diagonal line. Open out the two halves of the half square triangle (HST) block and press open with the seam toward the pink half. Trim each HST to 2-1/2 square. Make 24. Trim HST to 2-1/2 square Make 24 Make 12 four-patches 4-1/2 square Step 5 Step 4 Arrange a white square, a red square and two pink/ white HSTs into a four patch. Sew the white square to a HST. Press toward the white square. Sew a HST to a red square. Press toward the red square. Sew the two pairs together matching the seam. Press to either side. Make 12 four-patch blocks. 2 Block 1 Roses MGD 270 Arrange 4 four-patch blocks in a horizontal row, as shown at right. Make sure the red squares touch each other. Sew the four blocks together and press the seams toward the outermost squares. Make 2 rows. Sew 2 four-patch block together with the white part of the pink/white HSTs together as shown at right. Press the seam to either side. Make 2. Step 9 Sew the pairs of four-patch blocks (from step 10) to opposite sides of the 8-1/2 white square. Press toward the white square. Sew the row of 4 four-patch blocks (from step 9) to the top of the white center square matching seams, midpoints and ends. Press toward the large white square. Sew the second row of 4 four-patch blocks (from step 9) to the bottom of the white center square matching seams, midpoints and ends. Press toward the large white square. Press the completed block. The block should measure 16-1/2 square. Step 10 Step /2 white square Trace the applique templates on the back side of the fusible web. Label each template with letter and color. Cut out around each template. Fuse each template onto the wrong side of the selected applique fabrics. Cut out all fused templates on the traced lines. Step 12 Position the placement guide beneath the completed block on a pressing surface. Pin the block to the placement guide. Arrange the applique templates on the block using the placement guide for positioning. [Darken the lines on the placement guide if they don t show adequately through the fabric.] Fuse the applique in place when correctly positioned. Remove the placement guide and pin stabilizer to the back of the block. Edge stitch each piece by hand or machine using matching thread. Remove the stabilizer when the edge stitching is complete.
