3 UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN Be sure to read through the instructions before you begin. All seam allowances are ¼ and instructions for pressing are specified in each step. PRINTING THE TEMPLATES STARCHING YOUR FABRIC Starching your fabric will help stabilize the bias edges of the fabric and give you greater accuracy when piecing. Lightly spray starch on the fabric and then flip the fabric starch side down and press from the other side. Keep lightly starching, flipping, and pressing until your fabrics have a medium stiffness. Visit /starching for a free starching tutorial. Be sure your printer is set to print at 100% no scaling before printing the templates (at the end of this PDF). After they re printed, check the 1/2 guide to be sure the templates are the proper size. We prefer to use a leave in wash-away stabilizer for foundation paper piecing. You can print directly on the stabilizer sheets with an ink-jet printer. After piecing, there is no need to remove the stabilizer. Learn more at: /products/wash-or-tear-away-stabilizer CUTTING PIECES A AND B Using the chart to the right, cut the appropriate number of 4 x 6 pieces from each of your,,, B1, B2 and B3 fabric selections. CUTTING PIECES C, D, AND E W/ TEMPLATES Lay templates C, D, and E onto the wrong side of your chosen fabrics. Cut roughly around the templates. Make sure the outer edges of the fabric run along the grain. Using the chart below, cut the appropriate number of template pieces from your C1, C2,,, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, and E6 fabric selections. Stack up to four fabrics at a time and cut. After roughly cutting each piece, place a few dots of washable glue on the backside of your templates and stick them to the wrong side of the matching pieces of fabric. Carefully trim each template on the outer solid black line. 4 Step 1: Place a dot of washable school glue on the backside of section. Stick the wrong side of fabric to the backside of section. Make sure the fabric is covering section entirely. Step 2: Line up a flat ruler with the line between sections and (ruler will cover section ). Fold the template back against the ruler and use an Add-A-Quarter ruler to trim the seam allowance to 1/4. piecing A & B Step 3: Line fabric with the cut edge of fabric, right sides together. Ensure fabric covers section on the template entirely by holding the fabric in place and fliping it over. Step 4: Sew directly on the line between section and on your template. Set the seam and press fabric outward. 3

5 Step 5: Line up a flat ruler with the line between sections and (ruler will cover section ). Fold the template back against the ruler and use an Add-A-Quarter ruler to trim the seam allowance to 1/4. Step 6: Line fabric with the cut edge of fabric, right sides together. Ensure fabric covers section on the template entirely by holding the fabric in place and fliping it over. piecing A & B Paper Step 7: Sew directly on the line between sections and on your template. Set the seam and press fabric outward. Step 8: Carefully cut along the outer black line of the entire template. PIECE REMAINING A AND B TEMPLATES Repeat steps 1-8 to complete all piecing for templates A and B. 4

6 Step 9: Take a pin and place it through the upper points of sections and B1 to perfectly match the two pieces. Keep the pin pushed into your pressing board and place a thin line of glue along the edge. Line up the edges of the pieces and heat-set the glue with a hot, dry iron. C Step 10: With a 1/4 seam allowance, sew along the entire edge. Pop open the center seam with your fingers and press seam open and flat. Carefully cut away the dog ears from the top of the triangle. C joining A to B joining C Step 11: Take a pin and place it through the upper left points of template C and /B1 to perfectly match the two pieces. Keep the pin pushed into your pressing board and place a thin line of glue along the edge. Line up the edges of the pieces and heat-set the glue with a hot, dry iron. Step 12: With a 1/4 seam allowance, sew along the entire edge of template C. Press the seam toward template C. 5

7 Step 13: Take a pin and place it through the upper left points of template D and / to perfectly match the two pieces. Keep the pin pushed into your pressing board and place a thin line of glue along the edge. Line up the edges of the pieces and heat-set the glue with a hot, dry iron. Keep the pin pushed into your pressing board and place a thin line of glue along the edge. Line up the edges of the pieces and heat-set the glue with a hot, dry iron. Step 16: With a 1/4 seam allowance, sew along the entire edge of template E. Press the seam toward template E. 6

8 Crib Throw Twin Queen King SEWING THE BLOCKS TOGETHER Lay the finished blocks out to come up with your desired placement. Make sure to rotate every other block so the background makes the diagonal zig-zag appearance. Sew the finished blocks together in rows, pressing the seams to one direction. Alternate the pressing direction for each row so the seams can be nested when sewing the rows together.
