Materials Yardages are based on a 42" width of useable fabric after prewashing and removing selvages. 1/2 yard of dark brown lattice print for blocks, outer border, and binding ( ) 1/2 yard of neutral pineapple floral print for blocks, sashing, and borders ( ) 1 fat quarter (18" x 21") of raspberry shirting print for blocks and outer border ( ) 1 fat quarter of pink crescent vine print for blocks and outer border ( ) 1 fat quarter of brown diamond print for blocks and outer border ( ) 1 fat quarter of brown shirting print for blocks and outer border ( ) 1 fat eighth (9" x 21") of neutral lattice print for sashing and outer border ( ) 1 yard of fabric of your choice for backing 34" x 34" square of batting Standard sewing and quiltmaking supplies Cutting Cut all pieces across the width of the fabric in the order given unless otherwise noted. From the dark brown lattice print, cut: 2 strips, 17/8" x 42"; crosscut into 32 squares, 17/8" x 17/8". Cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 small triangles (64 small triangles total). From the remainder of the longest strip, cut 1 square, 11/2" x 11/2". 2 strips, 11/2" x 42"; crosscut into 28 rectangles, 11/2" x 21/2" 3 binding strips, 21/2" x 42" From the neutral pineapple floral print, cut: 3 strips, 17/8" x 42"; crosscut into 48 squares, 17/8" x 17/8". Cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 small triangles (96 small triangles total). From the remainder of the longest strip, cut 2 squares, 11/2" x 11/2". 3 strips, 11/2" x 42"; crosscut into: 54 squares, 11/2" x 11/2" (56 total, including the previously cut squares) 4 rectangles, 11/2" x 91/2" 2 strips, 11/2" x 42"; crosscut each strip into: 1 strip, 11/2" x 191/2" (2 total) 1 strip, 11/2" x 211/2" (2 total) From the raspberry shirting print, cut: 8 squares, 17/8" x 17/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 small triangles (16 small triangles total) 24 squares, 11/2" x 11/2" 4 squares, 1" x 1" From the pink crescent vine print, cut: 6 squares, 37/8" x 37/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 large triangles (12 large triangles total) 8 squares, 17/8" x 17/8"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 small triangles (16 small triangles total) 36 squares, 11/2" x 11/2" 1

2 From the brown diamond print, cut: 28 rectangles, 11/2" x 21/2" From the brown shirting print, cut: 28 rectangles, 11/2" x 21/2" 4 squares, 11/2" x 11/2" From the neutral lattice print, cut: 1 strip, 37/8" x 21"; crosscut into 2 squares, 37/8" x 37/8". Cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 large triangles (4 large triangles total). From the remainder of the strip, cut 4 rectangles, 11/2" x 41/2". 3 strips, 11/2" x 21"; crosscut into 12 rectangles, 11/2" x 41/2" (16 total, including the previously cut rectangles) Piecing the Blocks Sew all pieces with right sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted. Join a dark brown lattice print and neutral pineapple floral print small triangle along the long, diagonal edges. Press the seam allowances away from the neutral print. Trim away the dog-ear points. Repeat to piece a total of 64 dark brown lattice small half-square-triangle units measuring 11/2" square, including the seam Using the raspberry shirting print and pink crescent vine print small triangles in place of the dark brown lattice print small triangles, repeat step 1 to piece 16 raspberry shirting print and 16 pink crescent vine print small half-square-triangle units measuring 11/2" square, including the seam Make 64. Make 16 each. Repeat step 1 using the pink crescent vine large triangles and the brown diamond large triangles to piece eight pink crescent-and-brown diamond large half-squaretriangle units measuring 31/2" square, including the seam Press the seam allowances toward the brown print. Repeat to piece eight raspberry shirtingand-brown shirting large half-square-triangle units. Choose eight each of the raspberry shirting and pink crescent vine 11/2" squares. Use a pencil and an acrylic ruler to draw a diagonal sewing line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each square. Reserve the remaining squares for later use. Layer a prepared step 4 raspberry shirting square onto the brown corner of a pink crescent-and-brown diamond large half-square-triangle unit. Stitch the square along the drawn diagonal line. Fold the resulting inner triangle open, aligning the corner with the halfsquare-triangle unit; press. Trim away the layers beneath the top triangle, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat to piece a total of eight pink crescent half-square-triangle variation units measuring 31/2" square, including the seam In the same manner, use the raspberry shirting-and-brown shirting large half-square-triangle units and the prepared pink crescent 11/2" squares to make eight raspberry shirting half-square-triangle variation units. Make 8 each. Lay out two dark brown lattice small half-squaretriangle units and one raspberry shirting small halfsquare-triangle unit in a lternating positions. Join the pieces. Press the seam allowances toward the neutral print. Repeat for a total of eight pieced dark brown-andraspberry point units and eight pieced reversed dark brown-and-raspberry point units measuring 11/2" x 31/2", including the seam Make 8 and 8 reversed. Make 8 each. 2

3 Using the pink crescent vine half-square-triangles in place of the raspberry shirting half-square-triangles, repeat step 6 to make a total of eight pieced dark brownand-pink crescent point units and eight pieced reversed dark brown-and-pink crescent point units. Make 8 and 8 reversed. Lay out a pink crescent half-square-triangle variation unit, a pieced dark brown-and-raspberry point unit, a reversed dark brown-and-raspberry point unit, and one neutral pineapple floral 11/2" square in two horizontal rows as shown. Join the pieces in each row. Press the seam allowances of the top row toward the neutral print. Press the seam allowances of the bottom row toward the pink triangle. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances away from the top point unit. Repeat for a total of eight pieced pink crescent quarter-block units measuring 41/2" square, including the seam the seam allowances of each row toward the neutral lattice print. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances toward the middle row. Repeat for a total of four pieced blocks measuring 91/2" square, including the seam Piecing the Quilt Center Repeat step 4 of Piecing the Blocks to prepare four raspberry shirting print 1" squares. Layer a prepared raspberry square onto one corner of a pieced block, positioning it on the corner of a pink crescent quarter-block unit. Stitch, press, and trim as previously instructed to form a raspberry triangle corner. Repeat with the remaining pieced blocks. Repeat step 8 using the raspberry half-square-triangle variation units and pink crescent point units to make a total of eight pieced raspberry quarter-block units. Using the pictured quilt as a guide, lay out two pink crescent quarter-block units, two raspberry quarterblock units, four neutral lattice 11/2" x 41/2" sashing rectangles, and one brown shirting print 11/2" square in three horizontal rows. Join the pieces in each row. Press 3

5 EXTRA SNIPPET Hanging Small Quilts With the products and technology available to today s quilters, hanging a small quilt is quick and easy to do without poking holes in your wall! To prepare a hanging sleeve, measure the width of your finished quilt and subtract 2" from this number. From on-hand scraps, cut a 3½"-wide strip in the length of your adjusted measurement. Turn each short end over to the wrong side of the print ¼" twice, pressing after each fold. Machine stitch the folded ends approximately 1 8" from each edge. With wrong sides together, use a ¼" seam allowance to stitch the long raw edges; press the seam allowances open. Center the long seam under the stitched tube to hide it; press. Position the sleeve from right to left on the back of the quilt, placing it approximately 1½" down from the top bound edge. Hand stitch the long edges in place, leaving the ends open. Completing the Quilt Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Quilt the layers. The featured quilt was machine quilted from edge to edge with a Baptist Fan design. Join the dark brown lattice print 21/2" x 42" strips into one length and use it to bind the quilt. Following the manufacturer s instructions, apply two small 3M hooks (in a size that will accommodate the weight of your quilt) to the wall, spacing them so the vertical centers of the hooks will be positioned approximately 1½" in from the right and left sides of the quilt. Cut a small wooden dowel to measure approximately 1¼" longer than the length of your stitched hanging sleeve. Insert the dowel into the sleeve, and hang your quilt on the hooks.
