2 The panels in the center of this quilt make it look complicated, but it's really not. Using the 4-at-a-time Flying Geese Units method makes quick work of the sashing and the Star blocks give the finishing touch to this Quilt of Valor worthy design. Quilt Size: 60" 85" Block Size: 10" Materials yards navy print 2 yards tan print 1 yard gold print 1 3 yard stripe 4 panel squares yards for backing Twin-size batting Cutting Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. From navy print, cut: 14 (3 3 8") strips. From strips, cut: 152 (3 3 8") F squares. 7 (3") strips. From strips, cut: 84 (3") E squares. 8 (2¼") strips for binding. From tan print, cut: 6 (6¼") strips. From strips, cut: 36 (6¼") G squares. 3 (5½") strips. From strips, cut: 21 (5½") D squares. 4 (3") strips. From strips, cut: 48 (3") E squares. From gold print, cut: 1 (6¼") strip. From strip, cut: 2 (6¼") G squares. 8 (1") strips. From strips, cut: 8 (1" 20½") C rectangles and 8 (1" 19½") B rectangles. 5 (3") strips. From 1 strip, cut: 4 (3") E squares. Piece partial and remaining strips together to make 4 (3" 45½") inner borders. From stripe, cut: 3 (3") strips. Piece strips together to make 2 (3" 60½") top and bottom borders. 3 Panel Block Assembly 1. Lay out an A panel square, 2 gold B rectangles, and 2 gold C rectangles as shown in Panel Block Diagrams. E D F C G MAKE 21 Star Block Center Unit Diagrams B A 2. Draw a line from the lower left corner to the upper right corner on the wrong side of the E square. 3. Stitch on drawn line. Trim ¼" from the stitched line as shown in Star Block Center Unit Diagrams. 4. Press corner triangle open as shown. Panel Block Diagrams 2. Sew B rectangles to opposite sides of the A panel square. 3. Sew C rectangles to the top and bottom of the A panel square to complete one panel block. 4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to complete a total of 4 Panel Blocks. Star Block Assembly 1. Lay one navy E square atop one tan D square with right sides together, as shown in Star Block Center Unit Diagrams. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 on the remaining three corners of the D square to make one Star Block Center Unit. Make a total of 21 Star Block Center Units. 6. On the wrong side of 144 navy F squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Draw lines ¼" away from each side of the previously drawn line as shown in Flying Geese Unit Diagrams. 7. Place 2 marked F squares on tan G square, right sides together. Stitch on the outer marked lines. Cut on the centerline and press seams toward the navy triangles as shown. 8. Place 2 marked F squares on the triangle units in Step 7 as shown in Flying Geese Unit Diagrams. Stitch on the outer marked lines. 9. Cut on the centerline and press seams toward navy triangles, as shown, to make 4 Flying Geese Units. 10. Repeat steps 6 through 10 to make a total of 144 navy/tan Flying Geese Units. 4 MAKE 144 MAKE 8 Flying Geese Diagrams 11. In the same manner, make 8 navy/gold Flying Geese Units using gold G squares and 8 navy E squares. 12. Lay out 1 Star Block Center Unit, 4 navy/tan Flying Geese Units, and 4 tan E squares as shown in Block Diagrams. E Sashing Assembly 1. Lay out 8 navy/tan Flying Geese Units as shown in Flying Geese Sashing Unit Diagrams. 2. Sew Flying Geese units together to create Flying Geese Sashing Units. Make a total of 12 sashing units. MAKE 12 Flying Geese Sashing Unit Diagrams Quilt Top Assembly 1. Lay out Panel Blocks, Flying Geese Sashing Units, and Star Block Center Units into rows as shown in Quilt Top Assembly Diagram on page Sew pieces together to create rows. Sew rows together to create the quilt top center. 3. Sew navy/gold Flying Geese Units, gold E squares, and gold inner borders to quilt top center as shown. 4. Lay out 6 Star Blocks in a row. Sew blocks together to make Star Block border. Make 2 Star Block borders. Attach Star Block borders to the top of the quilt top center and one border to the bottom of the quilt top center. 5. Sew stripe top and bottom borders to the quilt top center to finish quilt top. Block Diagrams 13. Sew units together to create rows. Sew rows together to make Star Block. Make 12 Star Blocks. Finishing 1. Divide backing into 2 (96") length panels. Join panels vertically. 2. Layer backing, batting, and quilt top; baste. Quilt as desired. 3.
