1 Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild Newsletter Volume 31, Issue 2, February 2, 2018 The Guild With Heart The next meeting will be on Monday, February 12, 2018, 7:00 P.M. at Messiah Lutheran Church (in the gym) in Mauldin, South Carolina. FROM THE PRESIDENT: Hello Quilters, Reinvigorating Nimble Thimbles in 2018 Seems January is a tough month to have a meeting always a snow day. I think we need to reevaluate our policy on canceling a meeting. We are now going into February - Valentine s Day and Mardi Gras, a festive month. We are a month behind on getting our guild moving so please be ready to volunteer on a committee will have new ideas, techniques and workshops to look forward to. We need the following Committee Leaders: Hospitality, Quilt Show, Library, Guild Sales, Opportunity Quilt, Education Minute. If I ve missed anything, please let me know. Still learning this position. Thanks. NEW CHAIRS: Quilt Shop Ambassador-This is a new position, which will involve keeping the guild up-to-date on what is going on with local quilt shops their classes, sales items, etc. We need to support our quilt shops and they will continue to be there for us. Big Sister (a monthly volunteer position) welcome and sit with guests to make them feel comfortable, answer their questions and motivate them to want to join us. Our membership in the last few years has decreased by 50%. I look forward to our New Year. Please be ready to volunteer on a committee at February s meeting. I m open to suggestions, education, and fun ideas for This is your Guild, let s make it great. I hope you will want to attend all the meetings and invite new people to attend. Unfortunately, because our January meeting was cancelled we were unable to host Teresa Coolidge to speak on Going Batty. February 12- Information Fair - Please let Rose Mary or myself know if you are willing to lead a committee or activity so we can schedule you to say a few words at the February meeting. Member Trunk Show Please bring a quilt or project that you want to brag about or is special to you in some way. We have so much talent in our guild, please take this opportunity to share your talent with us. Information forms will be available at the meeting. Make & Take Goodwill Flags-We will make 9 x 12 inspirational flags. March 12 - Jill McCloy-from Colorado Springs; she is taking a side trip from the Sewing Expo in Atlanta March 8-10 to be our speaker. April 9 - Paige Alexander- What Makes It Modern? Also, remember that the funds raised by the dollar door prize help to offset the rental of our meeting space. Thank you for your contributions last year. We rotate the meeting in the homes of our members. This is a group that is open to all Nimble Thimble members old and new. Generally, it is a BYOP, hand work or machines may be brought. It is bring your own project. Several group members have been working on Deb Heatherly s mystery quilt. We re looking forward to seeing the reveal of this mystery. If you want to knit, crochet, or work on embroidery or cross stitch you are welcome to join us. You can stay for a little while or stay all day. We just need to know if you are planning to attend. If you plan to stay all day bring your lunch, beverages, and/or snacks. There is a small kitchen area with a refrigerator and a microwave for our use. This group is open to family, friends, and guild members. If you have questions please contact Becki Kauffman or Yvonne Stiefel. 3 QUILTS OF VALOR Thank you for all you do. --Helen Hinkle For more information about Quilts of Valor check out There are free patterns available as well as information how to nominate a veteran for a quilt. ROUND ROBIN - PICK A THEME UPDATE We met at Pam Nugent's house on Jan. 20 to exchange the boxes that we had been working on since last year. There were 9 of us in the Round Robin: Shelia Chandler, Susan Perham, Ruth Rembis, Gloria Taliafero, Donna Zellmer, Joyce Bohan, Mona Turner, Pam Nugent and Ruth Bartholomew. Each person chose a theme. Then, each month, each person in the group made a block to match the theme. Themes included Christmas, Halloween, travel, Texas, sewing, birds, colors yellow and gray. It definitely stretched our abilities and imagination! I loved seeing all the blocks that were made. We decided to bring them to the February meeting to share with the rest of the guild. Hope to see you there! - Mona Turner HABITAT FOR HUMANITY QUILTS Philanthropy The home dedication held in January was rainy, but we were inside the home warm and dry. It was a little crowded, but it was good to have such a large group of people there for the dedication. Photos were posted on the FaceBook page for Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild. Four quilts were given to the family (one for dad and three for the children.) Thank you again to all who make it possible for us to give quilts to the family members. The quilts are a big part of making their house a home. Remember that you do not have to do all the work from start to finish unless that is your preference. You can make blocks, take a stack of blocks and sew them into a top, take a finished top and do the quilting, and/or sew the binding on a finished top. If you need fabric check with Becky because some donated fabric is available for Habitat quilts. There are also kits prepared if you d like to take a kit and complete the quilt top. There are home builds in progress but no dedications scheduled for February at this time. Thank you for your support of quilts for Habitat for Humanity. We couldn t do this without your support. Our guild has an excellent library of quilt books for check out. Take time to see what is available. 3
