4 January Birthdays Jan 21 - Brenda Wall Jan 27 Barbara Ziobro Jan 28 Ilse Perea Jan 31 Lois Brown Happy Birthday Friends! If you have a January birthday and it is not listed here, I apologize for the omission. Hospitality Refreshments for January Evelyn Kellogg Debbie Fenton Jean Andersen Book Review Jelly Roll Dreams 12 New Designs for Jelly Roll Quilts Compiled by Pam & Nicky Lintott 127 pages D&C (David&Charles) 2012 $ new From the title of the book you already know that there are twelve different projects using jelly roll fabric strips. Moda sent out a challenge to create a quilt using one jelly roll (40 strips) and the quilt designer could add up to three yards of additional fabrics (think about backgrounds, appliqués, sashing strips, borders, etc.) The addition of this additional fabric means there is a greater variety of designs than what you usually see if you are only using jelly roll strips. The quilt designs in this book are the winners from the challenge. Each quilt design is not labeled as easy, intermediate, or challenge but the quilts are arranged from easy to more difficult from the beginning to the end of the book. So, the beginner friendly quilt designs are in the front of the book and the most difficult are toward the end of the book with intermediate in-between. There are diamonds, pinwheels, an Irish Chain variation, a plus sign design called The Penny Quilt, a Log Cabin variation called The Black Hole, framed four patch and nine patch blocks, chevrons, a Lone Star variation, as well as a giant cupcake/muffin design. Each design is shown in two different color ways. Information about the number of strips needed, any color/fabric sorting that needs to be done, and the additional fabric(s) needed is clearly explained. I especially liked the diagrams that explained how to piece 4 the blocks because there were arrows to show the pressing information so that when blocks are put together you will be able to nest the seams easily. Anything that helps me piece blocks accurately is appreciated. I have not attempted any of these quilt designs yet, but there are three quilts that I really like and will consider taking the time to make them. By Yvonne Stiefel Habitat for Humanity Philanthropy There were many smiling faces at the Habitat home dedication on December 16, We all shivered together in the cold (thankfully no rain, wind, or snow) as the new home owner was welcomed to the neighborhood, the home was blessed, and various speakers shared information about Habitat, the volunteer workers, and the organizations that work together to make affordable housing possible for families. Three quilts were presented to family members. The children wrapped up to keep warm and held on tightly to his/her quilt. Guests at the dedication were then invited into the home to look around and to visit with each other. Channel 7 and Fox 21 News attended the dedication and interviewed the home owner. There will be another Habitat home dedication in January. Details will be shared as soon as the date, time, and location are available. Quilt guild members and friends are invited to attend any and all dedications. Becky Schwartz Yvonne Stiefel Block of the Month for January Bring any 6-12 (finished) block. Each block you bring entitles you to enter your name in the drawing for a chance to win all the blocks brought.
