1 Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild Volume 26 Issue 23 July 13, 2015 The Guild With Heart The next meeting will be on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. at Messiah Lutheran Church (in the gym) in Mauldin, South Carolina. From the President: Dear Friends, Here it is July already. This year is whizzing by! I really enjoyed the thread sketching class/program. I have used that new skill in a quilt top already! I can t wait to see the pillowcases that you all will be making. You are a talented bunch! But best of all, from your work the smiles that it will put on the faces of the kids that receive them! I enjoy hearing how much it means for the people who receive the things we make for them! Keep stitching and putting smiles on the faces of those who receive your gifts! God Bless You, Evelyn P.S. I have started my Christmas projects. Christmas in July! Happy Stitching! July/August Programs The five of us who attended the Monday class on Thread Sketching given by Darlene Roberts really enjoyed the class and were able to learn four techniques in one class! I can t wait to get my machine out of the shop so I can do more of it. And I didn t think I d enjoy it at all! In July we will have our Ice Cream and Salads Social. We are inviting everyone to bring a pillowcase (home sewn not store bought) for a child or a teenager, which will be donated to the Children s Hospital. We are going to give out prizes for different categories (which we are still working on). So everyone please come with a pillowcase and a dish to share (salad ingredients and/or ice cream and toppings) and we will all have a great time. At the August meeting we will have Donna Royson who is a certified instructor of the Eleanor Burns method of a quilt in a day program. I have received the information that she will not be speaking at the Foothills Guild after all, so this will be a great chance to hear her speak. Also, she is going to come back on Saturday, August 22, 2015 to teach a class on Cozy Scallop Quilt. This quilt can be made with or without the scalloped top and bottom and I think it will be a good addition to everyone s list of quilts that are quick to

2 July/August Programs Continued Make for both Habitat for Humanity and Quilts of Valor as it is quilt as you go method. I will be starting a class list so send me an or give me a call. The class will be from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. in our usual meeting place and the class fee will be $25. She will accept a maximum of 25 students. I m looking forward to seeing you all at both our July and August meetings and hope that you will find time to take the class also. Minutes from the May meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter: motion-sheila Chandler, second-pat Hubbard. There are no changes to the financial report since the printing of the newsletter. Quilt Show Chairman Shelia Chandler requested a chairman for the Demonstrations at the Quilt show. RoseMary Brytus volunteered. Habitat for Humanity: Susan Perham and Sue Davis told about a dedication on June 7, Members should look for notifications of upcoming dedications through phone calls, s, or on the website. Please continue making quilts! Education Minute was given by Debbie Clarke, who gave us the tip of weighting newly pressed seams to set the press by using a magazine or dressmaker clapper. Quilts of Valor: Suzanne DiCarlo is still awarding quilts, most recently at the Harley Davidson Honor Flight. See Suzanne if you can donate sewing time. Block of the Month: Pam Loburk won the 34 Carrie Nation blocks. Next month s block is Ohio Star. Each block sewn equals a chance to win all the blocks. Quilters of South Carolina: Susan Perham said that registration for the Fall Retreat will open online on July 12, QSC s Spring Meeting will be in Spartanburg. Vice President Sharon Larson asked that we all make a pillowcase for our next month s meeting for children with cancer. Next month is our social. Bring a salad and/or ice cream/ice cream topping. There was a discussion about having Donna Royson from Quilt in a Day for the August meeting. Donna Royson will offer a class for Hole in the Wall Quilt. The dollar door prize was won by Debbie Doyal. The name tag drawing was won by Pam Nugent. Eight members showed projects in Show and Share. The program was given by Darlene Roberts on Machine/Thread Sketching/Painting with her class participants showing their work from the workshop earlier that day. Quilts of Valor in the Upstate There are currently two groups meeting in our local area. The first is Silver Threads QOV group which meets on the first and third Wednesdays at Christ Community Church in Simpsonville. The second one meets at Marietta s Quilt and Sew on the first Saturday of the month. These groups are open to anyone who wants to help us make quilts for our service members and veterans. The QOV website is Please check out what this organization is doing. Also, check out the Facebook page for our Region, Quilts of Valor Region 8. I try to post pictures of presentations. You never know when you will see a quilt you recognize. This past week I presented to a daughter, a West Point graduate with three tours in Afghanistan, and her mother, a 29 year Veteran Army Nurse. Suzanne DiCarlo QOV South Carolina Block Drive Directions for the 12 ½ inch (unfinished size) Friendship Star block are included in the newsletter. Completed blocks may be turned in to Suzanne DiCarlo at any guild meeting. These blocks will be used with additional donated blocks to make quilts of valor. Fabric Strip Swap It s July and we are to bring strips from a Red, White, and Blue fabric. Bring 13 strips from the SAME fabric to swap. Please make sure that your strips are from the same fabric so that each member gets one of each fabric. Betty Adams Fat Quarter Basket Remember to bring fat quarters of fabric to be included in the basket for quilt show. In the past the basket has contained fat quarters! It will be very helpful to have the fabrics turned in well in advance of the quilt show in October. Fabrics should be turned in to Betty Adams. Thank you. 4

5 Book Review Christmas Sparkle Written by Mary Jane Carely Published by Leisure Arts 60 pages $12.99 This is a soft cover book that I bought at my local JoAnn s fabric shop because I am a sucker for quilted Christmas things. The color pictures are clear and help me visualize what the project will look like finished. There are a large variety of projects to make, ranging from a Christmas tree pillow, to wall hangings in a variety of sizes, as well as a cute stocking to hang for Santa to fill. One of the features I like is that with each pattern is a detailed shopping list of supplies to purchase. This appealed to me as I am always forgetting what I need until I get home. (sound familiar?) The cutting and sewing directions are also easy to read. I feel a beginner would be able to understand and follow these directions. There is a general instruction section in the back of the book that I like because it covers many things a new quilter will find helpful, and the more advanced quilter may find a new method to try. (I speak from experience here.) Some of the general instructions the book covers are: template construction, rotary cutting, fusible appliqué, needle turn appliqué, as well as how to bind a quilt. You should check this book out as it has turned out to be a hidden treasure for me. Paper Piecing Block Exchange Finished blocks will be returned to Debbie Miller this month and Tanya Guyder will be handing out the pattern packets to members who are participating in this exchange. The Longarm Network The Longarm Network is open! 201 Pelham Davis Circle, Greenville. They are the sales and training center for Innova brand longarms for the southeast but they have much more to offer. They have some wonderful classes. They sell supplies i.e..thread, quilt carriers, tools, batting by the roll, and lots of extra wide backings. If you don t have a longarm yet, you can also rent time on their machines. You must take a three hour class before renting but part of that class includes practicing (maybe quilt a charity quilt). 6 U.F.O. Busters Bee UFO Busters meet eight days after the Nimble Thimbles meeting (i.e. the second Tuesday after Nimble Thimbles) from 7:00 PM 9:00 PM. We meet in the homes of the members. It is a BYOP (Bring Your Own Project) group. We do have a Christmas pot luck. Other than that there are no planned projects. This group is open to all members of Nimble Thimbles. You must be able to drop the feed dog and have a darning foot or free motion foot for your sewing machine. Aurifil thread in light gray or natural/cream is recommended, although you can use other threads. This is an open group if you would like to attend. If you have questions contact Becki Kauffman or Yvonne Stiefel. Please contact Yvonne at if you plan to attend so enough doll size quilts are prepared. Second Saturday Stitchers The next meeting for the Second Saturday Stitchers will be July 11, 2015 from 9:00 AM 3:00 PM at Standing Springs Baptist Church in Simpsonville. You may drop in and stay for just a little while or stay the whole time. Bring your own beverage and/or lunch as well as your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. Or plan to sew by hand (or you can crochet, knit, cross stitch, work on embroidery, etc.) In July we will be thinking Christmas with ideas for ornaments being shared. We also plan to work on free motion quilting some doll size quilts (18 inches or 24 inches) to be donated to Pediatric Services with a soft toy for their Christmas party. The doll size quilt will be provided with batting and Bonnie Hunter Workshops Bonnie Hunter will be the featured speaker at the guild meeting on January 11, There are two workshops scheduled: Saturday, January 9, 2016 will be Cathedral Stars and Sunday, January 10, 2016 will be Scrappy Trips. There are still a few openings in each workshop. If you want to sign up for a workshop please contact Sharon Larson. You will need to pay in advance to hold your place in the class. After the July guild meeting registration for the workshop(s) will be open to members of guilds other than Nimble Thimbles. 6

8 Internet Connections Continued Pillowcase Pattern For information about our annual Aunt Het Quilt Show, go to: Reminders: There is a pillowcase pattern included with the newsletter. You can use this pattern or another pattern to create your pillowcase to bring to the July guild meeting. This is not mandatory, but we are hoping for a large number of pillowcases to be turned in. Another good source for a pattern and a video tutorial for how to make a pillowcase using the hot dog or roll up method is available at: Wear your nametag at the meeting. Members and guests sign in and get your tickets for the drawings. Return any library books that are due and/or take time to check out a book. Quilt magazines are available for a 25 cent donation (per magazine) to God s Pantry. Take time to look at the fabric available for Habitat for Humanity quilts.
