1 Meeting: Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Christ the King Church Community Hall, 1951 McKinleyville Road, McKinleyville March Meeting POUCH QUILT Reversible Quilt-As-You-Go In 1998 Margaret Gutowsky was featured in Quilters Newsletter Magazine showing how to assemble a quilt that was reversible and made from four-patch units sewn as separate pouches. The pouches were then quilted by hand and assembled into a quilt. These pouches were easy for the maker to take along anywhere while she completes the handwork. This Reversible Quilt-As-You-Go idea was perfect for me. I like to have something that I can do with my hands while watching television, traveling as a passenger in a car, or just sitting around talking with friends. I selected fabrics, machine sewed a variety of four-patch blocks, and completed each block by hand. I was glad to have easy, portable work to do. I hoped it kept me busy so I didn t snack so much!! I will share this not so new idea at the March meeting. I will lead you through the steps to making the pouch blocks. You will be provided with your own sample and written instructions. Just bring a needle and neutral thread, plus a thimble if you normally use one. We will discuss ways to assemble the blocks and construct the quilt. The quilt can be made any size dependent on how many pouch blocks are constructed. It can have a color theme or just use random colors. So come to the March meeting and get started on quilt blocks that can be carried with you and completed at your leisure. February Community Sew Meeting Our February meeting was a work meeting creating quilts for the community. After all reports were given, we settled down to cutting new patterns, cutting batting for existing quilt tops, sewing binding, and creating new quilt tops. There was a great deal of laughter, talking, and sharing going on, as everyone was a having a good time together and enjoying what they were doing. We followed up this work party on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at our usual meeting place, and did we ever create! We finished four new quilt tops with another two almost finished, three quilts had their bindings sewn on, and four quilts are all ready for the "long arm machines." At the beginning of the morning, we had four people working, but we soon had twelve people working hard at creating quilts. We now have fourteen quilts ready for the community! 2 Community Quilts After our very successful workshops (2) in February, we now have fourteen quilts ready to be shared with our community! I am sooooooo very proud of each of you who gave up your personal time so that we might accomplish this wonderful goal. Many thanks to Chris Ross, Carol Weaver, Jeannie Buerer, Debbie Davis, Debbie Jensen, Rae Pillor, Ann Van Zant, mother and daughter, Malia and Kirstin, and Jan Scheffler. Many special thanks to Margaret for not only sewing for hours, but heading straight to the kitchen to help me set up the food and drinks and again to pack it up to head home for the day. Stop by the Community Quilts table at our March meeting and view all the lovely quilts we have created to give away. Shar Evans On The Raffle Table Spring has sprung, the grass has risen, and the birds are in my yard. Even the neighbor s hens have come to visit. How about some floral fabric for the raffle table this month? Of course, there is going to be a bear hanging out, and they are so tired of being boxed in. If you don t have a floral fabric you want to part with, how about a spare ruler you don t use or a book or two? We made $42 last month. 4 Fat Quarters We had such a great turn out for fat quarters in February - just perfect spring blooms and so many wonderful butterflies. Two winners had their names chosen by our new member, Kiki. They were Barbara Branco and Jeannie Buerer. I've been seeing many rainbows of late. Seems as though that would be a good theme for this month of March. Theme: Rainbows. Colors: Lt. Blue, Lt. Red, Lt. Yellow. Animal: Small Birds. I hope that we have the same great turnout as last month. Don"t forget to visit the raffle table. I found some very nice fabric last month.
