1 OUR MONTHLY QUILT TALK Volume 34, No. 7 Saline County Quilters Guild Newsletter July 2017 Eddie Landreth, Editor Website: Dear Quilting Friends: President's Message Today is the first day of summer so I am doing summer stuff like canning tomatoes, salsa, & bread & butter jalapeno peppers and I had rather be quilting for sure but oh well such is life. Quilt guild meeting was wonderful Monday night. Thank you so much Sheila Bird for the great program it was outstanding. It was obvious that a lot of time was put into it. I am excited about doing a swap for a signature quilt. I just want to thank all of you who are doing so much to make the guild fun and exciting, however I am a little saddened that no one has stepped up and offered to take the secretary position since our sweet Rhonda had to step down and take care of her health. If no one does I guess we just won't have any minutes. Remember the Hot Springs guild will be having their quilt show at the Convention Center the 14th & 15th of July. We are entering our donation quilt and will be able to sell tickets for it at the show, so we thank them for this opportunity. Please remember our members who have health issues or a family member who does in your prayers and don't forget to practice random acts of kindness where ever we are. 2 ~ Programs ~ In September, we will follow Lori Holt s Bee Happy Sew Along on the Bee in my Bonnet blog. She will post a block each Monday. If the Library is available we will met the Saturday following the meeting and at QA at the Bed Warmer quilt shop to work on the blocks (10:00 till closing). The pattern is free but a set of Sew Simple Shapes is needed. The guild will purchase a set for our use at these meetings. I will post a picture of the quilt in the newsletter closer to September. You must be a member to use the set of Simple Shapes. Please contact Shirley Miller and she will send a little sunshine their way. sfmiller37@aol.com or call Hot Springs Area Quilt Guild 2017 Quilt Show The Hot Springs Area Quilt Guild will be holding their biennial quilt show this summer on July 14-15, 2017, at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Information can be found on their website at the following link: ~ Saturday Workshop ~ On July 22nd, 2017, Sondra Curtis will be instructing a new project called Harvest Time table topper. Patterns were handed out and we will meet at Calvary Church at 9:30 a.m. Please bring your materials, machine and all sewing items needed. Also bring a sack lunch or you may go out for lunch. A reminder that the workshop class cost is $5.00 and may be paid at the workshop, please bring small change. Irons, extension cords, cutting mats and rotary cutters, thread, needles, and pins. Thank you, Cely Slover ~ Library Report ~ Quilting Makes The Quilt by Lee Cleland clearly shows the impact that the quilting design can have on the finished quilt. Several identical, pieced tops were quilted in different designs, and the results are awesome. For the traditional quilts shown, the author provides the quilt pattern, the quilting pattern with a detailed description, and an explanation of the design principles that work. Realizing that most of us now rely on machine quilters (who offer an array of patterns) to complete our projects, I believe this book could prove helpful to you (the maker) and the quilter as you choose the quilting pattern for your next project. 3 ~ First Wednesday ~ Month Host July 5 none due to holiday August 2 Bedwarmer Quilt and Sew September 6 Dorothy Richards October 4 Linda Bennett November 1 December 6 Phyllis Kirtley ~ Kansas Troubles Lecture and Workshop ~ Lynne Hagmeier from Kansas Troubles will be here to do a lecture called Moda and Beyond at the August Guild meeting. Come prepared to see some fabulous quilts. She will also teach two classes for us: Tuesday August 22 she will do Barn Raising The pattern will be free to those taking the class. She also has a kit available for $ It will make a 72 inch square quilt. This is a 5 hour class Class fee is $35 Wednesday August 23 she will do Goose Tracks table runner. Pattern will be half price in class. She has a kit available for $ Class fee is $25 Both classes will be at Calvary Baptist Church and START at 10 am. If you take both classes, the fee will be $50. I still have room in both classes if you want to sign up. I NEED TO KNOW IF YOU WANT A KIT THE DAY YOU GET THIS NEWSLETTER. LYNNE NEEDS TIME TO GET THEM CUT!!! Pat has found a teacher close to home that would be easy for you to start with. ~ UFO Challenge ~ Done is Good UFO challenge Hope everyone is enjoying the challenge as much as I am. We had 12 members complete their number one UFO and the next number rolled was number 5. Your number FIVE UFO can be turned in early at the July meeting but is due by the August meeting. Pat Wade ~ Meeting Minutes ~ Meeting Minutes for June 19 th, 2017 Guild Meeting The Saline County Quilters Guild met on Monday, June 19 th, 2017 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 612 Valley View Road, Benton, Arkansas. Sondra called the meeting to order. No changes were made to the May minutes, but Pat Wade came forward and gave the Treasury report. There was no Old Business. Treasurer s Report Pat Wade gave a rundown of last month s treasurer s report since it didn t make it in the newsletter. The June report will be included in the next newsletter. May s final balance was $6, New Business Our dear Secretary, Rhonda Honeycutt, is having health issues and isn t currently able to perform the Secretarial duties. Sondra asked for a volunteer to fill the position until Rhonda is able to return. Please keep Rhonda in your prayers. The position had not yet been filled at the end of the meeting updates to follow. 4 Professional Workshop Fay talked about the Lynne Hagmeier class coming up in August and that there were only 8 people signed up for each of the two classes she will be teaching. A full class is considered to be 20. If there are more people interested please contact Fay, Fay discussed having to cancel the classes if they could not fill the classes. The classes are August 22 nd and August 23 rd. Please see details of class descriptions and costs in this newsletter. First Wednesday There will be no First Wednesday in July due to the Holiday. The next First Wednesday will be August 2 nd at The Bedwarmer Quilt and Sew. Saturday Workshop Sondra Curtis will be teaching a class featuring a Harvest Table Topper on July 22 nd at the Church. There was a sign-up sheet going around at guild meeting on Monday if you want to take the class and didn t get your name on the list, contact Sondra. 5:30 Workshop Jean Corley continued her tutorial on how to make a scrappy throw quilt. She reviewed the rows that have been demonstrated and answered questions for new members and visitors. Several members brought their works in progress and showed them for us all to admire. Several said it is one of the most enjoyable projects they have ever done. Thank you, Jean. Charity Quilts Workshop Sidney thanked everyone for their participation in the Saturday workshop to sew Charity Quilts. She showed the Guild the completed quilts and volunteers took unfinished quilts to bind and return. Library Report Myrna Yandell talked about the books she is reviewing in our library. Books are available to members to check out for 2 months at a time. She talked about the Big Book of Table Toppers and The Quilter s Album of Blocks & Borders by Judy Beyer which is the June book of the month. Everyone should take advantage of these books. Programs Gwen Rogers talked about July s program being a Salad Supper and Silent Auction with Patriotic theme. The blocks for the Silent Auction should be 12 ½ to finish at 12 and feature the Red, White and Blue theme. The meeting will start at 5:30 there will be no 5:30 workshop. Also bring your Red, White and Blue quilts there will be a lot of Show and Tell. Quiltaholics Anonymous Fay Poe announced QA will meet July 2 nd at the Bed Warmer at 10:00 for anyone who wants to work on their own projects or seek expert advice from our seasoned quilt members. Daytime Stitchers Jean Corley talked about the Daytime Stitcher s meeting at 9:30 the 4 th Monday of every month at the Saline County Library. Bring projects you are working on and/or anything for Show and Tell. There will be a tutorial. UFO Challenge Carolyn Morris rolled the Dice and #5 is the lucky number for your UFO projects. Deadline for this roll of the dice is August 17 th. 4
