1 OUR MONTHLY QUILT TALK Volume 35, No. 06 Saline County Quilters Guild Newsletter June 2018 Eddie Landreth, Editor Website: Dear Quilting Friends: President's Message Mercy it is hard to believe how fast this year is speeding by. So much to do and so little time it seems. I am trying to be more productive though, got a tee shirt quilt quilted and bound today and started back to working on UFO's. I know this sounds like a broke record but we did have another good meeting Monday night and as always we missed all of you who were not there. Shellie Blake did the program on using panels in quilts which was very good. Quilt show is getting closer so be sure to get your registration forms in soon along with making things for the Market Place and gathering door prizes. Please print off sponsorship forms and help with that and also the program booklet ad form. Please ask the businesses you patronize to place an ad or at least do a donation of $1.00 to $24.00 for a listing in the booklet as a friend of the quilt show. Remember to do random acts of kindness. Happy Quilting, Sondra OFFICERS President: Sondra Curtis 1 st VP: Terri Dobbs 2 nd VP: Fay Poe Secretary: Becky McGuire Treasurer: Pat Wade June Birthdays Happy Birthday! 2 ~ Programs ~ Do you have an idea for a program you'd like to see in our guild? Maybe it's one we've done in the past and you'd like to see it again. Are you longing to show us some of your quilts? Let Gwen or Myrna know about your ideas. Here's what we have lined up so far. Month June July August September October November December Program Judy Huggins--trunk show How to prep for the quilt show Shannon Young--How to be successful at quilting without really trying TBD Charlotte Williams program and vend TBD Christmas Party ~ Sunshine Report ~ Sunshine cards sent this month: Diane Craig - husband had surgery Jean Corley had surgery Thank you card sent to Janet Webster for donating cards to the guild. Do you know of someone who needs a sympathy or get well card? Please contact Shirley Miller and she will send a little sunshine their way. sfmiller37@aol.com or call Linda Adkins Joyce Breitenberg Janet Leffel ~ New Members ~ ~ 2018 UFO challenge ~ The dice was rolled and the number of your UFO due in July is #5. Pat Wade ~ Saturday Workshop ~ June 9th, A charity quilt workshop is scheduled for members to help make quilts for several organizations we donate to throughout the year. The time is at 9:30 a.m. at our meeting room at the church. Materials will be supplied so please be prepared to bring your machine and all needed items to work. If unable to finish during that time you may take project home and complete, then return quilt at our next meeting if possible. Thank you, Cely Slover ~ Library Report ~ Library Report: All-Time Favorite Scrap Quilts from That Patchwork Place is a collection of 18 scrap quilts, made by some of the leading quilters in the U.S. Scrap quilts are my favorite, probably because that's the kind of quilts my grandmothers made when I was young. What intrigues me is that the blocks within the quilt can all be the same yet look so different because of the use of varied fabrics. I like quilts that encourage my eyes to roam over the whole quilt and then to go back and roam over it again. A couple of the quilts in this book are made up of as many as identical blocks; the colors are pretty, pleasing to the eye, and the uniformity gives the quilt a neat, crisp appearance. But, I think I would get tired of making that many identical blocks. There are patterns that encourage the reader to improve their skills in making/using half-square triangles, or diamonds, or using a fabric foundation technique to make a four-pointed star. "Apple Crisp" and "Luck of the Irish" help us to use different shades of the same color, while other patterns help us with our use of color as we choose from a large number of prints to achieve the look we desire in our project. If you need some ideas for your next scrap quilt, or if you just like daydreaming over gorgeous scrap quilts made by others, this could be the book for you. I'll be glad to help you CHECK IT OUT. Myrna Yandell Librarian 2
3 ~ First Wednesday ~ First Wednesday potluck will be hosted by Shirley Miller at her home on June 6. Parking at her home is at a premium so please meet to carpool in the Wal-Mart parking lot at the side under the hill closest to the Riviera Maya restaurant and where Maurice's used to be. We'll meet at 9:20 a.m. and leave by 9:30 a.m. Month June 6 July 4 Aug 1 Sep 5 Oct 3 Nov 7 Dec 5 Hostess Shirley Miller None (holiday) Windy Wilt Judy Huggins Dorothy Richards Shellie the Bed-Warmer Quilt & Sew Phyllis Kirtley ~ Charity Quilts ~ The Guild voted to work on Charity quilts Saturday, June 9, at Calvary Church from 9:30 a.m. until whenever.
