1 Hot Springs Village Quilt Guild August 2016 Newsletter A Message from Glenda I hope you all are keeping cool in your sewing studios. Summer is such a great time for quilting because it is just too wretchedly hot to venture outside for more than the few minutes it takes to run from the car into the quilt shop and back again. (I have a very similar argument for why winter is such a great time for quilting. I am working on a theme for Spring, although I find I like to be outside during that time, so I guess Spring is a great time for making hexies). Thanks to Martha Spark for a fascinating and educational glimpse into the world of textile conservation and for sharing her expertise in examining and dating member s quilts. I brought in an estate rescue quilt that I only bought because it was the last day of the sale and I could not bear the thought it might be tossed away or sent to a thrift store. (Some people rescue puppies; some rescue quilts!) I was thrilled to learn that this beauty is from the 1920s, probably made around the time my granny was a young bride. I can just imagine her creating such lovely works. None of them survived the daily use and harsh laundry of that time, but I am blessed to have a few of the quilts she created in her later years. I cherish them and now know how to protect them for future generations. Hint: I won t be washing them in the washing machine! I am looking forward to our August program on wool applique. I have never done any wool work, so it promises to be a learning experience for me. I hope you all signed up for the class after the lecture and trunk show. Holly says it is a quick and easy project. All the supplies are included in the kit, and the project can be completed in the allotted time. No sewing machine required. My husband and I are headed away from our little slice of paradise for a couple of weeks of vacation. I hope to have lots to tell at the next meeting about quilt shops in Hawaii. We are visiting with a friend who already has scoped out the local shops for me. As my husband likes to say everything always comes back to quilts! Happy quilting and safe travels to any of you who are venturing out on the highways and byways. I look forward to seeing you next month. 2 Many thanks to those who brought their quilts and to those who shared the baskets they made last month. AUGUST - we will welcome Kay Harmon with Sew Graceful shop. Kay is a wonderful quilter who has not only made many primitive quilts, she also has designed and published patterns in Primitive Magazine. Be sure to bring a check book, she will also offer for sale some wonderful items from Sew Graceful. Kay will have a trunk showing as the program, the quilts ae sure to inspire you! Then on Friday, the day after guild she will teach a class in which you will learn the basics of wool applique. And many tips for working with wool. I always say, You learn something in every class I guarantee you will with this one. I know many are traveling during the summer and may not be able to attend next month. I only have a few signed up for the class. We have plenty of openings Please contact me if you would like to sign up. We have a variety of gently used and donated quilting books available for purchase. Prices are $1 and $2 per book. Thank you for continuing to be return books to your library. 3 The July Blocks of the Month were donated to our Betsy Ross Bee which is a member chapter of the Quilts of Valor program, a nationwide organization that awards quilts to our Veterans. 27 blocks enough for two quilts were donated. Leanne Cunningham, who chairs that bee, was asked to give us information about the bee. Also, if you are interested in this good work, contact her. Thank you, guild members For the in future quilts. Every block no matter what pattern was appreciated. The names of the veterans have been given to us by Jeff Meek from the Village Voice, Rick Martin from the VFW, and the activities directors at Mt. Carmel and Good Sam, friends, neighbors, and VQG members. Since there are so many veterans in the Village, the list seems to be endless, but please contact Leanne Cunningham (leanne630@mac.com ) if you have a friend or neighbor who you think would be a good candidate. If they have not already received a Quilt of Valor from our group, we ll do our best to award them in the way we know how to say thank ;you for your service, sacrifice, and Valor in serving our nation. We presented our first Quilt of Valor in August of 2013 and as of July 25, 2016, we will have distributed 122 Quilts of Valor to military veterans in Hot Springs Village area, and 5 to friends or relatives of the BRQB members in other states for the total of 133. Unfortunately, our records are not complete, but the best estimation of statistics would be that 92 of these veterans served in WWII, 13 in the Korean War, 24 in the Vietnam war, and 4 in the Iraq/Afghanistan War Leanne Cunningham Question: As of the August meeting, what is only 4 months away? Answer: The Auction! Which is a major revenue source for the guild. This is what pays our speakers, our rent, and everything else. Robin Hudson is the chair for the 2017 auction. She is collecting items now for both the silent and live auction. Your donated items return to you in the form of the excellence of our guild. Donated items do not have to be just quilting things suggestions: Basket filled with items relating to a theme, like spa items, bird feeding, golf, wine, chocolate A coupon for your time and talent, like for a homemade cake, embroidery work, quilting, a trip with you to a quilt shop. Jewelry, Gift cards Remember, groups of members are encouraged to go together in the donating of an item(s).

TRIM EVEN WITH THE CENTER SQUARE. PRESS AWAY FROM IT. 2. ADD ANOTHER STRIP FROM THE SAME COLOR #1 TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SQUARE AND REPEAT THE PROCESS OF STEP #1. AGAIN PRESS AWAY FROM THE CENTER SQUARE.NOW MOVE TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SQUARE AND REPEAT THE SA PROCESS WITH THE LIGHTEST COLOR #2 STRIPS ON EACH SIDE.

6 3. NOW MOVE TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SQUARE AND REPEAT THE SAME PROCESS WITH THE LIGHTEST COLOR #2 STRIPS ON EACH SIDE. 4.CONTINUE ADDING IN THE SAME MANNER, FIRST ONE SIDE AND THEN THE OTHER BEFORE CHANGING THE COLOR AGAIN.

8 Retreat News The 2017 Retreat has a working date of March 20 22, 2017 at the Ferndale 4-H retreat center. In September signups and deposits will begin. In order to make the contract and confirm the dates, 25 members need to commit to the retreat. Like everything else, there has been a slight increase in price. Type of Room: 2016 price 2017 price Single $234 $244 Double Triple Begin making your plans to attend. It is always so much fun, and a wonderful way to get to know your fellow guild members. If you answered yes to any of these questions joining a bee just might be your answer. A bee is a small group of quilt members, about 12, who meet on a regular schedule, usually monthly.
