1 MADISON AREA CHAPTER EMBROIDERS GUILD OF AMERICA In 2018, we will be celebrating our Chapter s 40 th Anniversary as well as hosting the GLR Seminar in April. We hope you enjoy learning about our beginnings, activities, and celebrating together our 40 years as a chapter. January 12 AM How It All Began Join us for an informal discussion of how the Madison Area Chapter came to be. Meet some of the founding members, share your memories, and bring your first and latest EGA project. Come enjoy reminiscing, sharing, and learning about the early years of our chapter. January 18 PM How It All Began This is a repeat of the morning meeting BUT since it s an informal discussion, it s sure to be different! Join us for a second round of reminiscing! February 9 AM and February 15 PM Chapter Interest Groups Our February meetings will be focused on learning more about our Interest Groups. A member of each interest group Hardanger, Canvas, Painted Canvas, Get The Darn Thing Done, Road Trips and Community Outreach will share with us the facts of each group to encourage all members to be involved in one or more of these small groups to expand our skills, eliminate works in progress (WIPs), and expand our friendships! February 10 and 24 - Workshop TEMARI Workshop Mary Jo Kopecky Ever wanted to figure out how those round stitched temari balls are made? Want to have some fun stuffing stockings and wrapping with cones of thread? Want to have a beautiful stitched temari ball when class is done? If so, this is the class for you! There are two different designs being taught you must choose only one of the two designs. See next page for details and pictures. December 4,

2 February 10 and 24, Workshop Temari, Mary Jo Kopecky (continued) Beginner KiKu Herringbone This design is for those individuals who have never completed a temari ball before, or those individuals who would like a refresher. Instructions will be provided as a PDF file. There will be videos to watch in class as well as demonstration of techniques. Students will provide the base color serger thread as well as the perle cotton and marking thread of their choice for the design (detailed information regarding the serger thread/perle cotton to purchase will be provided). The kit will include rice hulls, yarn, needles, special pins and tape measure, and power wrapping thread. Butterfly Temari - Intermediate Prerequisite for this design is to have previously completed a temari ball. The butterfly is a layered kiku herringbone design stitched in a large triangle of the combination 6 division. Learning combination divisions opens up ever more beautiful designs for stitching. Instructions will be provided as a PDF file. There will be videos to watch in class as well as demonstration of techniques. March 9 AM BIBLIOCRAFT AT MACEGA Dena Dramm Come to the unveiling of our new on-line cataloguing system for the chapter s library! To start off, there will be a computer tour of our chapter account at Library Thing highlighting the main search features. Then we ll move on to how to use library searches to spark your project creativity with hints on how to make those searches more satisfying at any library. We ll top off the session with a chance to check out a real book from our chapter s collection. December 4,

3 March 15 PM 2018 EGA PROGRAM: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF STITCHING WE ARE $EW WORTH IT Trish Franklin If you ever wondered how much your embroidery or quilting is worth, then this is the lecture for you! Based on a Sam Hunter lecture, Trish will talk about how to figure out just how much time and money your work is worth. Even if you aren t planning to sell your work, this is an educational tool (and enjoyable presentation) to give us all a better appreciation of the value of our artwork. This is a 2016 encore lecture. April 13 AM INDIGO Jennifer Falkowski Jennifer is an avid Indigo researcher, dyer and teacher. Join us for an interesting lecture of the history and how-to s of Indigo as well as examples of Jennifer s work. April 20 - Friday (special event) 2018 GLR SEMINAR Since our regular meeting night occurs during seminar, we want to welcome all members to attend a piece of seminar. Come to the Marriott West on Friday afternoon to participate and view the Needlework Exhibit. Join fellow members in the Hospitality Suite for a light supper, then enjoy shopping at seminar s Merchandise Night. May 11 AM and May 17 PM 40 th ANNIVERSARY ORNAMENT Debra Steaffens Keeping with tradition, this ornament is designed with red or ruby as its main color adding either lime green or purple as an accent. The design incorporates a couple of newer threads into the design as well as two Jean Hilton stitches and some fun with beads. Kit includes: red 18 count canvas, all threads for one color way, beads, needles and instructions with color photograph. Students will need 2 pairs stretcher bars, thumbtacks, frame weight or holder, and usual stitching supplies. December 4,

4 June 8 AM and June 21 PM SHADES OF BLACKWORK Dena Dramm Take your blackwork to the next dimension. Shading creates different values in an embroidered piece, thereby giving it more dimension. This is especially effective in blackwork due to the typical use of only one color of thread. Using your own fabric and threads plus the Blackwork Butterfly petite project from EGA, these meetings will demonstrate three shading techniques relative density of patterns, weight of threads, and number of strands of thread. Members should bring a copy of the petite project, fabric, threads and usual stitiching supplies to give these techniques a try. July 19 PM 40 th ANNIVERSARY CELBRATION DINNER Nakoma Golf Club Join us at Nakoma Golf Club for dinner and a special presentation of Hats of Many Colors by Peg Schuett, better known as the Hat Lady to celebrate our 40 th Anniversary. August 10 AM and August 16 PM Show Boutique Enjoy fellowship while stitching to stock the boutique for our Annual Show in October. Either stitch on something provided by the Boutique Committee or bring a piece that you are planning on donating. December 4,

5 September 14 AM GLITZ n GLAM MEASURING TAPE Shannon Jambord, Meant to Bead You will love showing off this useful stitching accessory when you have finished adding the Glitz n Glam beading to this measuring tape. Shannon will be teaching beginning and intermediate beading skills while you are embellishing our ruby red anniversary measuring tape creating a net with crystal rondels and seed beads. Plus you will learn some tricks on working with two-hole beads. September 20 PM A DESIGN JOURNEY Cathy Habermann Cathy Habermann will share with us a behind the scenes look at her business, Hands on Design, and the design process, including a trunk show of her designs. September Workshop A PLACE FOR PINS - RUBY EDITION Cathy Habermann During this two-day workshop with Cathy Habermann, we will be completing our block style pin cushion and constructing a special hand-made box to store your treasure. Pre-stitching kits will be distributed to complete the required stitching prior to the first class. October 12 AM and October 18 STUMPWORK BEADED DRAGONFLY PIN Judy Caruso The Dragonfly pin features a beaded body and stumpwork wings made from sparkling transparent ribbon. Available in either turquoise or green, the dragonfly will look lovely on your lapel or purse. The body of the dragonfly includes five different kinds of beads. Students will need to bring scissors for cutting wire, a bead tray/mat if you have one and usual stitching supplies. December 4,
