Easy Basic Skills #1 Hand Embroidery Length -- 6 hours (includes a break for lunch and shopping) Lessons Covered: -- Pattern Transfer -- Backstitch -- Threaded Backstitch -- Running Stitch -- Beaded Running Stitch -- Threaded Running Stitch -- Buttonhole Stitch -- Beaded Buttonhole Stitch -- Filler Stitches -- Rice Stitch -- Seed Stitch -- Problem Solving / Book Signing
-- Class Information -- Times: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. -- Six Hours with a break for lunch and shopping Lunch: We will take a break for lunch and shopping around noon. You are welcome to step out for lunch, or bring it back to the classroom to eat. You may also pack a lunch from home if you want to stay work during this time. Shopping: A 10% discount will be given on all class supplies purchased. Darcy will have her books and patterns available during the class period. All shopping items, including Darcy s books and patterns will ring up at the register. Oklahoma Quiltworks is happy to run a tab to be settled at the end of the day. Cameras: I will have lots of embroidery examples to examine, you are welcome and encouraged to bring a camera to take as many close-up pictures as you want. We will pass them around to be examined during class. There are lots of subtle details in the stitches that may get lost to memory over time. Other Classes: #1: The first in a three part series by Darcy Ashton is Hand Embroidery. In this first class you will learn the basics of hand embroidery plus Darcy s original, signature stitches, while creating a beautiful hand stitched tea towel. #2: The second in the series is Basic Needleturn Applique. In the second class you will learn all Darcy s original tips and tricks for basic applique and then we will reinforce the embroidery lessons learned in class #1 while embellishing our one piece bunny block. We will also focus on eyes and how to make them extra cute. #3: The third class is Advanced Applique. For this class we will assume that the student already knows how to embroider and applique. The new lessons taught this time will be how to take a pattern that includes many small pieces, prepare them separately, then nestle them back together at the iron into one piece with freezer paper that fits like a glove. Once again, we will reinforce the lessons learned in classes #1 and #2 but the main focus will be on the new technique. If a student does not already know how to applique or embroider, they should consider taking the basic classes first. The earlier classes are not required if the student already knows these techniques.
Hand Embroidery -- Class Supply List -- Books: Butterfly Dance and/or Aquatic Creatures Supplies: You get to choose between butterflies or fish, or put a combination of both on your tea towels. Each student will be required to have their own book. If you already have this book, great! Just bring it on the day of class. Name Tag: -- Bring your name tag from Guild if you belong to one. I will have temporary name tags if you need them. Cotton Tea Towel -- OKQW has a nice selection of quality cotton towels. Standard #2 Pencil -- I find that regular pencils work better than mechanical pencils, they leave darker, thicker lines and don t get caught in the fabric. We need to see our lines without straining our eyes. Optional: pencil sharpener. Embroidery Scissors -- Should be good quality -- small and sharp. Embroidery Needles -- Bring a variety of sizes if you have them. OKQW has variety packs available. Fine stitches are easier to create with fine needles. We are looking for a fairly thin embroidery needle, but make sure you can thread it. Embroidery Floss -- Bring a wide variety of colors. We want both very dark colors and very pale colors for the filler stitches plus black and white. We don t know yet what we are going to do, so bring lots. OKQW has a nice selection available for purchase. Glass Seed Beads -- These are not required but can be fun. Several stitches have a beaded option. If you are interested in learning about beading, bring some pretty glass seed beads. You will need a needle that is thin enough to accept the bead yet have a large enough eye to thread two strands of embroidery floss. Camera -- You are welcome and encouraged to bring a camera for close-up photos of the many embroidery samples for future reference. Optional Extra Items -- Not required but might be helpful -- Small Tabletop Light Small Embroidery Hoop -- I don t use one but some people find it handy. Circle Template -- Helpful for drawing perfectly round eyes Pencil Sharpener Needle Threader
Hand Embroidery -- Class Outline -- Class Description: This is a hand embroidery/embellishment class. You will learn many different stitches and embellishment tricks that can be used later in your quilts. Some of these stitches are unique modifications of traditional stitches that you won t find anywhere else. 1. Select and Transfer Patterns 2. The Basics of Hand Embroidery A. How to Separate Embroidery Threads B. Needle Selection C. Avoiding Knots D. Tying Off 3. Outline Stitches -- A. Running Stitch -- Threaded Running Stitch -- Beaded Running Stitch B. Knotted Buttonhole Stitch -- Beaded Buttonhole Stitch -- Threaded Buttonhole Stitch C. Backstitch -- Threaded Backstitch 4. Lunch and Shopping Filler Stitches -- A. Rice Stitch B. Seed Stitch C. French Knots D. Satin Stitch E. Lazy Daisy F. Fly Stitch G. Cross Stitch H. Weave Stitch
Contact Information and Resources If you already own the book or pattern required for this class, great! Just bring it with you. If you need a book or pattern, OKQW has plenty on hand for purchase on the day of the class. If you are unsure of your fabric/thread/needle choices, bring extras and we will figure it out as we go. The purpose of this class is to teach you a basic skill to use throughout the rest of your quilting career and to have fun! Oklahoma Quiltworks If you would like to know more about future classes, events, or just fun get togethers, check out the calendar at OKQW or on-line at Location: 9323 N.
