2 BEFORE YOU BEGIN: **You will need to choose your applique method before beginning this project.** Fusible Applique Method: We recommend Heat n Bond for fusible applique projects. Here is a basic overview of how all fusible applique products work: Shapes are traced on the paper side of the fusible applique webbing. Then, roughly cut around the shape with scissors. On a medium heat setting, iron the webbing bumpy side down to the wrong side of the fabric. Once cool, cut out the shape precisely on the drawn line. Remove the paper. This should result in a shiny coating where the paper had been. Position the shape over the background fabric with the shiny side down. Again with the iron on medium heat, iron the shape to the background. Secure the edge with a blanket stitch or satin stitch. Freezer Paper/Spray Starch Applique: This is our preferred method of applique. To learn this method, head to www. youtube.com/shabbyfabricsuniv to view our free video tutorials. The tools necessary for this method are available on our website for purchase. Just remember if using this technique, you will need to add 1/4 around the perimeter of each shape for turning under. Please note, wool felt pieces are never turned under! General Instructions All seam allowances are 1/4. Each unfinised block measures 10 1/2 x 10 1/2. We strongly suggest cutting your background pieces larger and then trimming after the embroidery is completed, as the edges may fray significantly with handling. WOF = Width of Fabric LOF = Length of Fabric Fabric Requirements: A wide variety of scraps of fabric and wool felt for the applique 1 yard of cream for the backgrounds 1/2 yard for the sashing 1/3 yard for the inner border 1 yard for the outer border 3 yards for the backing Other Required Materials: Various seed beads, bugle beads, and other small sparkly beads for embellishments 1 skein each of embroidery floss in variety of colors. You will need a skein of dark gray embroidery floss for the entire quilt. For Block 1, you will also need two shades of blue. Colors for future blocks will be revealed as they are determined. Recommended Supplies: Small, sharp scissors Embroidery needles Fine point permanent marker (we prefer Micron 005 acid-free fine line pens) Light box

3 General Instructions (continued) For spray starch applique: *Hobbico sealing iron *Applique stiletto *Freezer paper (we use C. Jenkins) *Stipple brush (we use Loew Cornell Fabric Dye brush) *Silk thread in coordinating colors (we use Kimono) *Straw needles (we use size 10 or 11) Pressing mat (we use June Tailor) Heavy spray starch Fusible webbing (we prefer Heat n Bond Light) - you will need this for the wool felt pieces, despite using spray starch applique on the cotton fabric pieces. 4 Frequently Asked Questions What size are the blocks and the finished quilt? The blocks finish to 10 square. The final quilt will finish to approximately 44 x 55 1/2. How do I know how much fabric to buy? As this is a mystery quilt, you won t see the whole quilt until it is nearly completed. However, we understand that you need to know the yardage for the full quilt at the beginning of the program. Yardage requirements are listed in the General Instructions available to download at any point during the program. What do I do with these patterns? You are only limited by your imagination! You can use the blocks to create a quilt, or use the block designs individually for wallhangings, pillows, tote bags, and more. Please note that you cannot sell products using these patterns nor can you print and sell the patterns. Can I purchase the fabrics you used? Yes! We have a Block of the Month program available. Sign up for just $10, and then each month you will be charged $27 (U.S.) or $33 (International) - shipping is included! - and sent the fabrics, embellishments, and embroidery floss necessary for that month s block. We d love for you to encourage your friends to download the pattern directly from us. Celebrate the Year Block 1 Piece the Heart From a variety of blue fabrics, cut a total of 25-2 x 2 squares. Sew into patchwork as shown in Diagram 1, five rows by five columns.

As mentioned in the General Instructions, this pattern can be done using fusible applique or freezer paper applique. Turn the Patchwork Unit on-point or 45 degrees so the unit forms a diamond.

5 Celebrate the Year Block 1 Piece the Heart From a variety of blue fabrics, cut a total of 25-2 x 2 squares. Sew into patchwork as shown in Diagram 1, five rows by five columns. Press each row toward the dots. Press rows toward Diagram 1 Applique Cut an 11 x 11 background piece out of cream fabric. As mentioned in the General Instructions, this pattern can be done using fusible applique or freezer paper applique. Turn the Patchwork Unit on-point or 45 degrees so the unit forms a diamond. Using the Heart Diagram and either fusible webbing or freezer paper, prepare the heart for applique. Be sure to add 1/4 all the way around the shape if you plan on turning the edge under. As a reminder, wool felt is never turned under. Using Heat n Bond Light (or another fusible applique product), trace the Doily Diagram and the Banner Diagram onto the paper side of the fusible webbing. Follow the manufacturer s instructions to apply the Heat n Bond to the wool felt. Using sharp scissors, cut out the shapes - except for the holes in the doily. Before removing the paper, use a standard-size hole punch to create the holes in the doily. Remove paper, center doily on the background square, and press. Applique the patchwork heart to the center of the wool felt doily using the applique technique of your choice. Do not attach the banner at this time. Finish the Block Remove the paper from the banner. Transfer the month name and snowflakes to the banner using a light box and fine pen. Position the banner on the pieced heart as shown in the photo above. Iron in place. Using three strands of metallic gold embroidery floss, add the stitching around the doily and banner by coming up from underneath with your needle along the edge of the wool felt, and going back down about 1/8 inch into the wool felt. (See close up above.) Using three strands of DMC 844 (dark gray) embroidery floss, stitch the text using a back stitch. Using three strands of blue embroidery floss, add the larger snowflakes using a back stitch. Then add the French knots to the end of each line using two wraps. Repeat for the two smaller snowflakes using a lighter blue floss. Then add a variety of small beads around the snowflakes. Once all applique and embroidery is complete, trim block to 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 by trimming 1/4 off equally on all sides Jennifer Bosworth
