Speaker Ilene Bartos Ilene Bartos has been working with fabric arts and quilting for almost 20 years, and has won various awards and ribbons. She has written several books and patterns and has kits available. She lives in Urbandale, Iowa and has been married almost 40 years. Her lecture on April 18 will be titled. Borders, Sashing, and More. "Borders, Sashings and More" trunk show with discussion on how to add interest to your blocks by your choice of borders and sashings. Come prepared to take home some ideas for your next quilt or bring finished blocks to discuss alternate sashing/border ideas. President s Message Hope everyone had a great happy Easter. I ve noticed that spring is trying to come because my mini crocuses are up and blooming. The purple flowers sure seem very festive. I hope everyone is working on their challenge so we have a good showing for June. I guess that means I should probably start on mine since it is my idea. Also just so you know, we still have a few slots left for the Creston Retreat, just call and let me know if you need a spot. Better get everything ready, the time sure flies when you re busy. 2 President s Challenge - due in June This year we are putting a new twist on the challenge. The size of the quilts must be 36 to 40 square. Color is not important - anything you want. However the quilt must include at least one block that starts with the first letter of your first name, for example: Jerry - Jacob s Ladder. Many blocks are known by more than one name, but as long as the block name begins with the first letter of your first name, it is allowed. Please do not put labels on your quilts and present your quilts in a brown paper bag, so they can be judged anonymously. After judging, if you don t have a use for your quilt, you might want to donate it to a nursing home to be used as a dignity quilt. Because they may be going to a nursing home, it might be nice to back the quilt with flannel. As of now we have not decided which nursing home to send them to, but many times President s Challenge entries just get put aside. By donating them to a nursing home, the quilts will be doing some good and not just sitting in your closet. If you have questions, contact Linda Northwick. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is right outside the back door. It is important that each us remains committed to these responsibilities. Thanks!! Page 2

3 Members at Large We now have 14 quilts from your donations for We know you can do better than that! Let s get those scraps pressed and sewn together. There are long-arm quilters willing to help with quilting and others who will bind your quilts, also. I dropped off a large number of quilts to Mercy Pediatrics department this morning. Lisa Fox is the contact person there, and she was so thrilled to get them. I haven't delivered any to them for a few months, so had quite the pile. She said they would be put to good use, and was sure the kids would love them. Remember to wear your name tags to the meetings. If you don't have one, get those creative juices flowing and make one! Any design or technique as long as it has your name on it. Remember open sew Saturdays are the first Saturday of each month. You can work on your current project, donation quilts or just stop in to chat. We usually have snacks to share and hot coffee. We'd love to see you there! See you at the meeting! The workshop will be held Saturday April 23rd at Cross Creek from 1-4 for a cost of $ Please see Paulette Roche for details and supply list. 5 IOWA QUILT MUSEUM OPENING MAY 21, 2016 WITH THREE CENTURIES OF RED + WHITE QUILTS CALL FOR QUILTS! The Iowa Quilt Museum, on the town square in Winterset, Iowa, is opening in May! We need your help! Our opening exhibit, "Three Centuries of Red + White Quilts," will feature 20 to 30 red and white quilts from the 1800s, 1900s, and 2000s, and we are looking for quilts to display to the new museum s first visitors. If you have a red and white quilt from any of these time periods, in any size, and using any technique(s) we'd like to hear from you! Fabrics do not have to be solids, but need to read as red and white. Red and cream quilts will be definitely be considered. Quilts will be insured and displayed in a climate controlled, light controlled environment. We will need your quilts from early in May until late in September. Please a picture to our guest curator, Virginia Berger at vbergerquilts@gmail.com by March 31st for consideration. You must include the quilt s dimensions.
