1 Eastern Polk Quilters Guild May 2018 Issue 209 Web Site: The next guild meeting is on May 21, 2018 Speaker: Peg Spradlin Quilt Tester and Designer Journey Peg Spradlin has been a home sewer/pattern tester for quilt magazines and fabric companies, including Quiltmaker and Craftsy, for over 30 years. In her trunk show she ll share how the job came about and what it entails, and will show many of those quilts plus her own original published and personal quilts. Peg has developed a fast and easy quilt block making technique (Fold and Sew) using precuts and she ll show the quilts made from those blocks and share a bit about how the method works. Peg has been quilting out of her home in rural Cozad, Nebraska on her domestic Bernina sewing machine for over 30 years. She has been a home sewer and pattern tester for Quiltmaker, Quilter s Newsletter, Connecting Threads, Marcus Fabrics, and Sympoz company during her quilting career. Peg specializes in precision piecing but her true love is quilting the top with lots of trapunto and dense background stitching. She teaches these techniques, and others, in classes all over the country. Peg has had quilts and articles published in Quilt It, McCalls, and Machine Quilting Unlimited, and is a regular contributor to Quiltmaker s 100 Blocks, and Quilts from Quiltmaker s 100 Blocks. 2 President s Challenge Due June meeting The president s challenge is stash busting. Use up those pieces of fabric you don t know what to do with. Any pattern is fine, that is your choice. I would like them to be throw or twin size for donation. I know you all have stashes big enough to make a twin out there. You will get entered into a drawing for gift cards. Twin size gets you two entries. We would like all donation quilts to have a label stating "Donated by Eastern Polk Quilters Guild, Altoona, Ia, 2018". We will have some labels made up and available to pick up at the guild meetings to be added to your donation quilts. If you wish to make your own labels that would be fine also. This is a picture of one of the quilt labels that are available. They are done in black, blue, and brown thread, so you can choose the color that suits your quilts the best. Take one, two, or all three colors! For each twin quilt donated, your name will be entered twice into the year end drawing. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the coordinator for the refreshments that month. The refreshments can be as simple or as complicated as the volunteers decide. Please remember the responsibilities of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is right outside the back door. It is important that each us remains committed to these responsibilities. Thanks!! Page 3

4 Ease into Hand Piecing Scrap Zig Zag Block Workshop Description Mickey Dupre July 15, pm Cost: $30 I do believe this is the perfect block to learn hand piecing. It breaks down into 4 simple units that eases students into learning my roundabout technique which results in sharp points and tight fabric intersections. Students will have access to the acrylic templates for this block, marking pens, a sample of needles & pins, a bobbin of thread and even a thimble pad all included in the kit fee (see supply list). Students only needed to bring some scraps of fabric and scissors. That has got to be the easiest supply list EVER! Let s sit and sew this block together. I bet you won t stop at one! Blue (NOTE I WILL HAVE PENS TO USE) I recommend Sakura pens that can be found in the scrapbooking area of your local craft store. FABRIC: Scrap fabrics: Lights & Mediums/Darks at least 5 square in size. Variety in color and pattern will make the best block! IN CLASSROOM: We will need an ironing station for every 6 students very little pressing. Page 5

We need a volunteer to take on this responsibility. That person will see that our members and their families in need hear from us and know that they have our loving thoughts and prayers. June 2nd is the next Saturday Sew Saturday Sews are scheduled the first Saturday of the month. Starting at 9 am, it is a day to get together and work on a project of your choice. Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a member of the guild to attend. Bring your lunch and join us for a great time.
