6 AUGMENTATION: PURPOSES An augmentatin system has the general bjective f imprving the use f GNSS, thrugh the prvisin f additinal infrmatin (differential crrectins r measurements). Systems that keep the fcus n accuracy. They are intended fr: LBS in general including leisure Mapping Cadastral Surveying SBASs are standardized at ICAO level t ensure interperability Systems fr Safety f Life applicatins with fcus n integrity: Air navigatin Water navigatin Transprts in general Systems fr ther services with legal r liability implicatins: Rad Tlling Exclusive Ecnmic Zne cntrl 6

7 SAFETY AND ACCURACY Safety is guaranteed thrugh the satisfactin f requirements prvided by internatinals bdies as Internatinal Civil Aviatin Organizatin (ICAO) and Internatinal Maritime Organizatin (IMO). Such requirements take als int accunt accuracy but the human life prtectin is the main driver. Integrity: Timely alarms in case f GNSS signal failure Infrmatin t users t cmpute the level f trust (cnfidence bunds) f the received GNSS signals In nn-sl systems accuracy is the fcus. Different levels f perfrmance can be achieved t satisfy different needs including ecnmic aspects. 7

9 ERRORS Errrs affecting GNSS perfrmance depend n several factrs: At system (space-cntrl) level: Clck errrs Ephemeris errrs [ Selective Availability (S/A) ] During the path frm satellite t receiver (prpagatin): Insphere effects Trpsphere effects At receiver level: Receiver nise Multipaths, interfering signals, etc. Errr surces can be divided in tw main grups: errrs with strng spatial crrelatin errrs with weak spatial crrelatin Spatial crrelatin refers t the variatin f the errr magnitude with respect t the change f the receiver psitin. Different GNSS receivers will experience the effect f the same errr surce depending n: the errr spatial crrelatin the distance amng the receivers Tw receivers with a certain degree f prximity will be affected by cmmn errrs and by errrs with a strng spatial crrelatin that can be mitigated. 9

12 EGNOS EGNOS - Eurpean Gestatinary Navigatin Overlay Service - is Eurpe reginal SBAS EGNOS was prmted by the Eurpean Tripartite Grup frmed by Eurcntrl, the Eurpean Cmmissin and the Eurpean Space Agency. It was initially designed fr aviatin t enable aircrafts t use GPS fr all phases f flight, frm en rute dwn t precisin appraches t any airprt within its cverage area. EGNOS prvides safety f life navigatin services als t maritime and land-based users Its main features are the prvisin f: Wide Area Differential crrectins Integrity infrmatin Currently it augments GPS L1 C/A signal Galile augmentatin planned in future system versins 12

13 EGNOS EGNOS is peratinal since 2009 EGNOS meets stringent Internatinal Civil Aviatin Organisatin (ICAO) requirements fr all phases f flight It is cmpliant with relevant ICAO Standards And Recmmended Practices fr SBAS (SARPS) and Minimum Operatinal Perfrmance Standard (MOPS) EGNOS is fully interperable with all ther SBAS wrldwide EGNOS is managed by: Eurpean GNSS Agency (GSA): explitatin phase, verall peratinal prgramme management Eurpean Satellite Service Prvider (ESSP): is the EGNOS Services Prvider within Eurpe, certified accrding t the Single Eurpean Sky (SES) regulatin as an Air Navigatin Service Prvider (ANSP) (under GSA cntract). Eurpean Cmmissin (EC): wner f the EGNOS system. Eurpean Space Agency (ESA): led EGNOS technical develpment; mandated by EC as agent fr design and prcurement fr system evlutins. 13

14 EGNOS SERVICES EGNOS prvides 3 services Open Service (OS) Safety f Life (SL) Service EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) 14

15 EGNOS OS EGNOS Open Service: available since 1 st Octber 2009 OS is freely accessible with a GPS/SBAS cmpatible receiver within the EGNOS OS area withut any specific authrisatin requirements. EGNOS OS can nly be used fr nn-safety critical purpses. The EGNOS OS service imprves psitining accuracy by crrecting errr surces affecting GNSS signals. The crrectins transmitted by EGNOS help mitigate ranging errr surces related t satellite clcks, satellite psitin and inspheric effects. EGNOS can als detect distrtins affecting the signals transmitted by GNSS, preventing users frm tracking unhealthy r misleading signals that culd lead t inaccurate psitining. OS minimum accuracy 15

16 EGNOS SOL SERVICE EGNOS SL Service is available since 2 nd March 2011 It prvides the mst stringent level f signal-in-space (SIS) perfrmance fr all SL users It supprts civil aviatin peratins dwn t LPV (Lcaliser Perfrmance with Vertical Guidance) minima (perfrmance characterisatin cnducted). SL may be used in maritime, railways and rad dmains whenever citizens life can be endangered by perfrmance f the navigatin system belw specified accuracy r by n alert ntice given within a specified time interval. SL SIS was designed t cmply with ICAO SARPS. Sl SIS prvides integrity infrmatin, it is pen and freely accessible. Sl SIS: augmentatin signal t GPS SPS fr psitining additinal timing signal 16

17 EGNOS EDAS The EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) ffers grund-based access t EGNOS data thrugh the Internet n a cntrlled access basis. EDAS is the access pint t data cllected and generated by the EGNOS grund infrastructure distributed ver Eurpe and Nrth Africa. EDAS prvides the same data that is bradcast by the EGNOS satellites (EGNOS Message) in near real-time. EDAS delivers EGNOS data t users wh cannt always view the EGNOS satellites (such as thse in urban canyns). EDAS primarily prvides the fllwing types f data: raw GPS, GLONASS and EGNOS gestatinary satellite bservatins navigatin data cllected by the entire netwrk f EGNOS statins; EGNOS augmentatin messages, as nrmally received by users via the EGNOS gestatinary satellites. 17

20 SPACE SEGMENT EGNOS data transmissin primarily relies n three telecmmunicatin gestatinary satellites centred ver Eurpe: PRN 120 Test Mde Inmarsat-3F2 AOR-E (Atlantic Ocean Regin East) statined at 15.5 W. PRN 123 Safety f Life Mde Astra 5B statined at 31.5 E. PRN 136 Safety f Life Mde Astra SES-5 statined at 5.0 E. High level f redundancy ver the whle service area in the event f a failure in the gestatinary satellite link. Any time, EGNOS peratins ensure at least tw GEOs bradcast an peratinal signal. Real time infrmatin abut status: egns_ ps/egns_ system_ realtime 20

21 EGNOS GROUND SEGMENT The EGNOS Grund Segment cnsists f: 40 Ranging Integrity Mnitring Statins (RIMS) (extensins freseen) 2 Missin Cntrl Centres (MCC): these receive the infrmatin frm the RIMS and generate crrectin messages t imprve satellite signal accuracy and infrmatin messages n the status f the satellites (integrity). The MCC act as the EGNOS system s 'brain'. 6 Navigatin Land Earth Statins (NLES) (2 fr each GEO) The EGNOS Wide Area Netwrk (EWAN) which prvides the cmmunicatin netwrk fr all the cmpnents f the grund segment. 2 additinal facilities are als deplyed as part f the grund segment t supprt system peratins and service prvisin: the Perfrmance Assessment and Checkut Facility (PACF) - perfrmance analysis, trubleshting, and peratinal prcedures as well upgrading specificatins and validatins and prviding maintenance supprt. the Applicatin Specific Qualificatin Facility (ASQF) - prvides civil aviatin and aernautical certificatin authrities with the tls t qualify, validate and certify the different EGNOS applicatins. 21

22 RIMS The main functin f the 40 RIMS is t cllect measurements frm GNSS satellites and t transmit these raw data (GPS L1 and L2 + GEO/GLO L1) every secnd t the Central Prcessing Facilities (CPF) f each MCC. Additinal RIMS in La Palma, (Spain), Athens (Greece) and Alexandria (Egypt) have been deplyed. A further extensin is als planned in rder t imprve the EGNOS perfrmance in the suthern parts f the service area. 22
