4 Galileo is taking off The first four operational satellites were launched on 21/10/2011 and 12/10/12 All industrial contracts necessary to ensure early Galileo services in 2014 have been signed. To accelerate Galileo s deployment and to further contain costs, the following contracts were signed on 2 February 2012: Additional order for 8 satellites (total of 26) Adaptation of Ariane-5 for Galileo Booking of one Ariane-5 17 October, 2012 The European GNSS Programmes 4

5 17 October, 2012 The European GNSS Programmes 5 EGNOS is fully operational EGNOS open service is operational since October 2009 Its Safety of Life service has been declared operational in March 2011 Around 100 approach procedures making use of EGNOS for aircraft landings approved in Europe The EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) was declared in July 2012

8 17 October, 2012 The European GNSS Programmes 8 Europe needs Galileo Galileo enhances Europe s technological independence The first global satellite positioning, navigation, and timing system, designed and operated under civil control As of 2008, financed entirely by the European Union and managed by the European Commission Provides Europe independence from other similar systems and greater robustness Targeted to be interoperable with other GNSS to facilitate their combined use and to offer better performances for all kinds of user communities worldwide GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite System

17 17 October, 2012 The European GNSS Programmes 17 EGNOS Open Service (OS) EGNOS Open Service greatly improves GPS over Europe Characteristics: Provides signals for timing and positioning to be used for non-safety critical applications Provided through two geostationary (GEO) satellites (plus one backup) Users: Intended for general purpose applications accessible freely using a SBAS compatible receiver within the EGNOS OS area without any direct charge Open Service (OS) Accuracy ~1m, free Available since October 2009
