Display The External Display fr FLARM Versin V3+M is a step-by-step display unit and peratr cntrl mdule fr FLARM TM ; functins and peratins are generally identical with the riginal. Due t the frame size f the step-by-step display, the V3+ can be installed in small and/r full instrument panels by narrwer panels the main device, the FLARM TM can be installed hidden in the fuselage. The external display has n wn FLARM TM functins and cannt replace the main device. Fr further infrmatin regarding the principles f functin, range and nrms f main device, please cnsult the riginal FLARM TM dcumentatin. Operatr cntrl and indicatin units [Mde] buttn 4 vertically situated status-led s (green) 12 circular situated status-led s (red/yellw) 4 LED s fr relative height indicatin (red/yellw) 2-digit distance display (red) brightness sensr (centered in airplane symbl) buzzer fr acustic alarms (underside) Audi utput [Mde] buttn The perating f all functins ccurs simply with the mde -buttn. During cnstructin significant imprtance was given t tactile feedback and the pssibility t perate the display while als wearing glves withut restrictins. Status-LED s 4 status-led s (green) situated vertically indicate perating status f FLARM TM. Directin and height indicatrs 12 circular-placed LED s fr the directin and 4 LED s fr the traffic height indicatin. The indicatin appears as relative directin indicatin which means frm the pint f pilt/flight directin and detects an appraching threat rapidly. Using the 2-clur display the bjects can als be recrded autmatically: safe bjects are shwn as yellw (Nearest-Mde). If there is a nearby threat n the basis f calculatin there will be an indicatin in.red. in additin t an acustic alarm. Distance indicatr In rder t lcate the indicated bjects quicker the distance indicatr can be very helpful. The indicating range extends frm 0.1 t 99 and the values > 9.9 may ccur nly in cnnectin with ADSB transpnder receivers. The display can be cnfigured with the indicatr in KM (kilmeters) r NM (naval miles); the adjusted measurement mdule is nt indicated cnstantly but nly shwn as a symbl fr a shrt time when switching unit n. Brightness sensr The indicatr is designed t be effective even in difficult cnditins, e.g. direct sunlight n the display, adequate readability f the indicatr is guaranteed. T ensure that blindness by diffuse light des nt ccur, the brightness f the display can be mdified. Alng with the fixed level f brightness, adjustments are autmatically made fr different degrees f light the specific brightness sensr is centered in the airplane symbl. Page 4
Acustic signal (buzzer) There is a sund surce n the lwer edge f the display fr an acustic warning. In the case f an appraching threat the acustic alarm sunds in additin t the red indicatr. The vlume can be adjusted int 4 levels. The signal can be muted fr a 5-minute perid in rder t cnsciusly eliminate acustic nise while thermal-circling with ther glider aircraft. Fr mre detailed instructins refer t the chapter Operatin. Page 5
Installatin General The display shuld be installed in the airplane in a manner that the pilt can read the indicatrs and perate the Mde buttn. The illuminated LED s enable ptimal readings f the indicatrs when direct sunlight falls nt the display. There is a small pening n the lwer edge fr the sund surce it is frbidden t clse the pening with glue r ther freign bjects. In rder t ensure a full vlume signal, a distance f minimum 10mm is required frm ther bjects/instruments. In rder t avid pssible influences n the magnetic cmpass the display shuld be installed at least 25cm away. Plug pening In rder t fit the external display nt the instrument panel an apprpriate pening fr the plug is necessary. (frnt view dimensinal drawings f the display) with square pening 16 x 16 mm with rund pening Ø 20 mm Adhesive attachment Fr installatin f the display an adhesive attachment prves t be the mst practical methd. Fr this purpse tw pre-cut duble-sided munting adhesives are included. Fr clean smth surfaces the thinner adhesive shuld be used; fr rugher surfaces the fam adhesive is the preferred chice. Attentin: in rder t guarantee ptimal adhesin, the surface must be abslutely clean and free frm il when applying the adhesive. The adhesin strengthens further within 24h after applicatin. Tip: t remve the sticker frm display, manual frce shuld be avided. Als nt recmmended is raising the sticker frm ne side with a metal bject (e.g. screwdriver) these actins can result in mechanical pressure being applied directly t the electrnic display panel which can lead t cracks and damage f the unit. It is recmmended instead t use a knife, cut all arund under the display until it can be lifted away frm adhesive sticker with minimal frce. Afterwards the adhesive sticker can be easily remved by hand d nt use any slvents n the display t avid penetratin and pssible damage t display. Adhesive sticker sets fr new installatins are available frm the distributr. Page 6
Screw Attachment When the adhesive methd prves unsuitable, attaching the unit with screws is pssible; fr this purpse there are tw M2 screw hles present in unit. Attentin: The M2 screws must nt enter further than 3 mm int the display shrten screws if necessary! screw fastening (frnt view) Imprtant: when the screws penetrate t far int the casing, damage t the electrnics f the display can ccur. It is mandatry t measure the length f the screws befrehand! Tip: influences n the cmpass, ther magnetic-influenced instruments and sensrs can be reduced by using (nn-magnetic) brass screws. Pwer supply There are pwer sckets n the display that cnnect t the mainframe. In additin t data cmmunicatin the FLARM TM instruments have a nn-stabilized battery supply available n their interface. This enables the peripheral device s pwer supply thrugh simple wiring. Nn-stabilized means the FLARM-device supply is cnnected withut vltage cntrl and withut internal fuse prtectin t the interface. Strictly adhere t the manufacturer s references regarding the cnnectin and fuse prtectin f the mainframe. The display V3+M has its wn vltage stabilizer fr its electrnics with an allwed input vltage range frm 8 t 35V DC and was develped fr the nminal (battery) supply f 8 35V. Pin allcatin display Display rear view 1: 8-35 VDC (battery supply frm FLARM) 2: nt cnnected (3.3V frm FLARM) 3: RS232-GND, internally cnnected t pin 6 4: RS232-RX: display receives data frm FLARM 5: RS232-TX: display sends data t FLARM 6: GND, internally cnnected t pin 3 The 6-cre cnnecting cable prvided and ptinal Y-adapter are wired 1:1. (Pin 1 f plug 1 ges t pin 1 f plug 2 etc.) Any warranty legal claim thrugh imprper installatin/wiring will be explicitly declined. Page 7
Wiring t FLARM TM Fr electrical cnnectin the prvided cable is cnnected t the jack f the external display and RJ12-jack f FLARM. T cnnect FLARM with the Hardware versin 1 (2004), nly ne jack (RJ45) is n the rear side. In rder t cnnect the pwer supply cable alng with the cnnectin t the external display, a Y-adapter (RJ45, 8-ple) is required. 6-cre cable frm hardware versin 2 (*) FLARM hardware versin 1 des nt have any extensin interface Wiring t PwerFLARM TM PORTABLE The V3+ display has a 6-ple RJ12-jack, PwerFLARM TM has a 8-ple RJ45-jack. Signal allcatin f bth jacks is cmpatible with the 6-cre cable frm the display and can be attached in the RJ45 plug; this means that the RJ45 plug pins 1 and 8 are rendered free. 6-cre cable Wiring t PwerFLARM TM CORE The PwerFLARM TM CORE is cnnected in similar fashin as the prtable PwerFLARM TM. The CORE has anther independent data interface at the DSUB-9 jack; this allws a pssible cnnectin t the display. Tw-seater versin Using the Y-adapter (RJ12. 6-ple) tw external displays can be perated n FLARM TM r PwerFLARM TM. In rder t avid data cllisins while perating bth displays, ne f the displays must be cnfigured as PAX (refer t peratin manual). All FLARM and display versins functin in cmbinatin with each ther. 6-cre cable 6-cre cable Other variatins The cnnectin ptins are versified, apart frm the displays t FLARM TM which can be cnnected t PDA r navigatin cmputers. If uncertain with cnnectins, cnsult the manuals f the FLARM TM -devices r cntact their distributr. Tip: The Y-adapter RJ12 (3 jacks) and RJ45 (2 jacks / 1 plug) are nrmally fund as cmmercial phne accessries; please nte with RJ12 that all 6 ples have their cntacts. In cmmercial use the 4-ple RJ11 versins are ften nly fund. Page 8
Cnfiguratin The display V3+M allws adjustments f diverse parameters as basic settings; these adjusted parameters then act as standard settings. T reach the setup mde the display must be discnnected frm pwer (remve cnnectr) and then recnnected with Mde buttn pressed mmentarily and this will then allw yu t cnfigure the display as in the table belw. A shrt cnfirmatin beep as well as flashing decimal pints n the distance indicatr will appear until leaving this mde. -> The status-led s indicate the selected parameters alng with the LED s f the cmpass rse shwing crrespnding values. -> On the distance indicatr the direct numerical values are indicated: 10 th = parameter number, 1 st = value Operating in cnfiguratin mde: A shrt press f the Mde buttn changes (increases) the value f the chsen parameter. All changes are saved and immediately valid. In rder t change the next parameter the buttn must be pressed fr a perid f 1-2 s. T leave the setup mde and/r an activatin f new adjustments the buttn must be pressed lnger than 3 s r FLARM, including the display, must be restarted (cut pwer supply and pwer up again). Parameter N Parameter brightness indicatr parallel peratin FLARM TM mainframe interface unit f measurement cmpatibility mde Status LED RX TX GPS Pwer RX + TX TX + GPS Value 1 15 strngly dimmed display PIC Value 2 45 dimmed display PAX LED: n signal: n LED: ff signal: ff 4800 Baud KM indicatin 9600 Baud NM indicatin OFF directin 1 LED ON directin 1..3 LED Value 3 75 nrmal LED: ff signal: n Baud Value bright LED: n signal: ff Baud Value very bright (max) Baud Value Value sensr adjustment - dimmed - sensr adjustment - nrmal Baud Value sensr adjustment - bright - bld print/underlined = standard settings Tip: A parallel peratin with devices/displays frm ther cmpanies n the same interface requires the transfer speed t be set t 4,800 Baud as a standard setting.we strngly recmmend nt using the display V3+M in cmbinatin with ther brands f devices n the same interface a parallel peratin with tw V3+/V3+/V3+M displays (e.g. tw-seater) was specifically designed during develpment and perate ptimally tgether at 4,800 Baud, with the cnfiguratin PIC/PAX (parameter 2). Operating with a parallel cnnectin t the display with ther prducts cannt be guaranteed and related service supprt will be denied. Page 9
Tips fr different cnfiguratin settings: Parameter 1 Indicatr Brightness: Values 1-5 adjust a fixed LED-brightness, there is n autmatic alignment Values 6-8 readjust autmatically the brightness f LED s by means f a sensr. 6 = rather dim / 7 = nrmal / 8 = rather bright Parameter 2 Parallel Operatin f Several Displays: If tw displays are needed e.g. in a tw-seater, they can be cnnected parallel; an apprpriate crrect cnfiguratin prevents blckage f the interfaces. Value 1: main indicatr (PIC/Master) in case f parallel peratin resp. with nly ne cnnected display. Value 2: additinal indicatr (COPI/Slave) in case f parallel peratin with a secnd display. Parameter 3 Indicatr FLARM TM Mainframe: Values 1-4 define hw the FLARM TM mainframe perates. If it is built in, fr example hidden in fuselage, it can create disturbances, when the acustic alarms (buzzers) sund ff frm behind the display has its wn built-in signal, hence the signal f the FLARM TM can then be switched ff. Parameter 4 Interface Transmissin Rate: Values 1-6 accrding t the table. The extensin interface f FLARM TM perates nrmally with 4800 Baud. If the display is perated n data interface, alignment f the baud rate f the display is pssible. As n high-quality cables with prtective shielding are used, we recmmend always using the smallest pssible baud rate. (see tips fr parallel peratins n page 9) Parameter 5 Distance Indicatr Measurement Unit: Value 1: the distance indicated in KM. Value 2: the distance in KM frm FLARM TM is recalculated and indicated in NM. Parameter 6 cmpatibility mdus: Value 1: Off = directin indicatin is given using ne LED. Value 2: On = directin indicatin is given like FLARM TM accrding t danger level with 1, 2 r 3 LED s. NOTE: All cnfiguratin settings apply t the specific indicatrs being adjusted. By parallel peratin using 2 displays the adjustment settings must be undertaken n bth displays. An exceptin is with Parameter 2 (parallel peratin) and Parameter 4 (interface transmissin rate) where bth displays can be adjusted differently, using different settings. Page 10
Start-up The display is nrmally prvided with pwer directly frm the mainframe and perates with this surce. The V3+ display carries ut a shrt self-test after receiving pwer and fr a shrt time illustrates the sftware versin f the display; a LED-test fllws and then the display is ready fr use. 1. Switch n 2. Shrt internal functinal test (nt shwn) 3. Display sftware versin indicatin: Stand V 3.7 (the third psitin, the number 1 represents an internal prgressive numerical system and is nt shwn) 4. LED-test ne by ne and in grups all LED s are switched n fr a shrt time; this allws a visual test t check if all indicatrs functin crrectly. (due t pwer cnsumptin nt all LED s are illuminated simultaneusly, fr this reasn testing ccurs in grups) 5. On the distance indicatr a cntrl symbl appears briefly fr the adjusted measuring unit. The distance depends n the adjusted cnfiguratin and is indicated in KM r NM afterwards the measuring unit is n lnger visible. Please ensure: The distance indicatr is given in KM: -> There is n cnversin f the given value (symbl refers t Eurpean metric system) The distance indicatr is given in NM: -> There is a cnversin f the received metric value in NM (symbl refers t nn f nautical miles) 6. In sme mainframes the versin number f the installed FLARM TM sftware versin is briefly shwn in sequence three times (see Start-up 3.). 7. The display resp. the cmplete FLARM TM system is nw ready fr use. Nrmally nly the Pwer LED flashes and the GPS-LED blinks until the system rientates itself and defines its actual psitin. NOTE: After installatin an inspectin must be made t ensure that the displayv3+ and FLARM TM main device d nt interfere with any mechanical, electrical, electrnic (radi) r magnetic (cmpass) system. This check shuld be recrded in aircraft dcuments. Page 11
Status indicatrs 4 vertical situated status-led s (green) indicate infrmatin regarding the cnditin f the system: LED Operatin Cnfiguratin (setup) RX Only flashes by receptin f ther devices in defined distance In cnfiguratin mdus the range, therwise RX-LED is nt illuminate. status-led s indicate which parameter is TX Only flashes during peratin, when wn signals/psitins are being sent (requires crrect GPS-receptin). actually indicated and its (adjusted) value. GPS Pwer Flashes cnstantly during peratin (interruptin nce /sec). When the LED is nt illuminated and flashes nly nce/sec, then n GPS-receptin exists; during start-up this cnditin can last several minutes until FLARM TM can define its exact psitin. illuminated cnstantly during peratin. The Pwer-LED blinks when vltage is belw 8 VDC as FLARM will nt functin with lw vltage. (refer t separate chapter in this manual) Cmmunicatin failure: If data cmmunicatin is interrupted with the mainframe (n data received fr mre than 3 secnds) the status-led s will shw as fllws: Pwer-LED is cnstantly n, RX, TX and GPS LED s all flash tgether. -> Check wiring t mainframe. -> Is FLARM-mainframe in peratin? Mde Buttn With the push buttn the pilt can activate diverse functins: Shrt press (<0.8 s) changes the vlume frm <lud> t <medium> t <silent> t <mute> (and again t <lud>). A shrt acustic cnfirmatin ccurs with each adjusted vlume. Default value after start-up is always <lud> (fr safety reasns). Press (> 2 s) changes between <Nearest> and <Warning> mdus. Default value after start-up is always < Nearest >. (See als extended descriptin in chapter Operatin mdes ) Duble click mutes visual and acustic warnings fr 5 minutes. This suppressin is cnfirmed with a decreasing sund sequence, when returned t nrmal setting an increasing sund sequence will ccur. A new duble click cancels the mute mde immediately. Page 12
Operatin mdes FLARM can be perated in tw peratin mdes Nearest and Warning. The Warning-Mde appears identically in bth and indicates in mst cases an immediate threat that requires prmpt and apprpriate reactin. When starting-up the device the Nearest-Mde is always active. Nearest-Mde In Nearest-Mde ther aircraft in nearby surrundings are indicated, if they represent n threat after evaluatin. Such traffic infrmatin is limited t a diameter f 3 km and a vertical separatin f 500 m. The nearest airplane is always indicated. The visual indicatin appears in yellw and static (withut flashing) and there is n sund; if n airplane has been indicated. When an airplane is received, a clicking sund will begin as a reference. As sn as FLARM cnfirms the airplane as a threat it will autmatically change t Warning -Mde. When the threat has disappeared it returns back t Nearest -Mde. The selectin f this mde is shwn after a buttn press (> 2 s) with a dwnwards symbl indicated n the display. Warning-Mde In Warning-Mde the signal ccurs nly after an evaluatin cnfirms an appraching threat. Warnings are always shwn with.red flashing. and are accmpanied by an acustic signal. Depending n the threat (3 threat levels) the flashing and buzzing frequencies will change. The selectin f this mde is shwn after a buttn press (> 2 s) with an upwards symbl indicated n the display. Traffic Functins Aircraft Warning The LED which is illuminated crrespnds best t the directin f the actual psitin f the mst dangerus airplane relative t wn mvement directin cmpared with the earth bund crdinate system (Grund Track). This signal can be distrted under strng winds, pushing the airplane relative t side winds in flight (side flight) r air speed is t lw with respect t the crdinate system (Grund Speed) (e.g. hvering f the helicpter). The indicatr updates every secnd. Bth the.red flashing. visual warning and the acustic warning (buzzing) appear at the same time. The early-warning perid is brief, it is given nly fr a few secnds and is even shrter by fixed-bstacle warnings. Page 13
Hrizntal Bearings Twelve 2-clur LED illustrate the rse f the cmpass Abve cnfrms t the actual flight directin. Each LED entails an identically large hrizntal sectin f 30. During warnings with FLARM TM either 1, 2 r 3 LED s flash depending n the threat level, the external display V3+ always shws nly ne LED. Recently it is pssible t shw the warnings n the V3+ analg t the FLARM TM indicatrs. Infrmatin t enable this functin Cmpatibility Mde is fund in the chart Cnfiguratin. Relevant directin is shwn as the center f the illuminated LED s. Threat levels: Mderate threat (less than apprximately s until pssible cllisin) -> red LED & buzzer interval slw (~ 2 Hz) Severe threat (less than apprximately s until pssible cllisin) -> red LED & buzzer interval middle (~ 4 Hz) Immediate threat (less than apprximately 6 8 s until pssible cllisin) -> red LED & buzzer interval rapid (~ 6 Hz) Indicatr examples V3+ Display Mde FLARM Cmpatibility Mde Mderate threat frm apprximately 3 clck flashing & buzzing slw 2 Hz Severe threat frm apprximately 1 clck flashing & buzzing middle 4 Hz Immediate threat frm 1 t 2 clck flashing & buzzing rapid 6 Hz Vertical Bearings The vertical bearing t anther airplane perates relative t wn flight altitude independent f wn psitin and is indicated n the vertical LED s. The indicatin is nt determined by the abslute altitude difference but cnsiders the distance as fllws: (1) n LED illuminated, by a vertical bearing angle less than 7 (2) inner LED s illuminated by a vertical bearing angle f 7 t 14 (3) uter LED s illuminated by a vertical bearing angle mre than 14 The flashing frequency is the same and synchrnus t hrizntal indicatrs. Page 14
Relative altitude difference Distance t indicated bject Frecasting Traffic In Nearest-Mde the nearest received aircraft is shwn as lng as n warning is required. Objects withut predictable threat which are recgnized by FLARM are indicated n the V3+M display in yellw and withut any sund. The indicatr des nt flash, but updates itself every secnd; therefre by several received bjects a flashinglike indicatin effect is pssible. Traffic at apprx. 2 clck n flashing, n buzzing Traffic at apprx. 7 clck n flashing, n buzzing Transpnder Object Indicatin The new FLARM TM devices r cmpatible external receivers (e.g. TRX 1090 frm GARRECHT) are additinally capable f receiving and evaluating signals frm transpnders. -> Signals frm a transpnder featuring ADS-B-OUT include the GPS-crdinates f the sending aircraft; therefre FLARM TM can evaluate the received signals, calculate and recgnize a pssible cllisin threat. The indicatin n the external display V3+ is the same as the indicatin f Airplane Warning, the indicatr cannt differ between a FLARM TM warning r a transpnder signal (with ADS-B-OUT). -> Signals frm a transpnder withut an ADS-B-OUT feature (airplanes with mde-c/s transpnders) d nt send any GPS-crdinates. FLARM TM is nt able t calculate the distance and directin f the received signals, but can determine n behalf f the signal strength, if the aircraft is in nearby surrundings -> distance indicatin. Page 15
ADS-B-OUT traffic at apprx. 3 clck with mderate threat identical indicatin as Aircraft Warning Receiving a strng transpnder Mde-C/S signal directin is nt defined -> 4 LED s in crss (4-crner psitin) threat level respnds t signal strength - > flashing frequency flashing & buzzing slw 2 Hz lashing & buzzing rapid 6 Hz Fixed-Obstacle Warning Many FLARM TM systems and cmpatible devices als include a fixed-bstacles database. Since February 2011 systems include apprx crdinates f ver 11,000 gegraphical bstacles in the Alpine regins. Check if mainframe t which the display is linked has such (actual) a database nly then can the external display V3+ illustrate the apprpriate traffic infrmatin and warnings. When FLARM TM calculates the cllisin threat with the fixed-bstacle, the system will warn as fllws: simultaneus flashing f tw LED s, flashing and buzzing rate depends n threat. (same as Aircraft Warning ) Cmment: -> A fixed-bstacle is always in the mving directin; there is n specific directin indicatin. -> There is n vertical psitin indicatin. -> There is a warning given when the aircraft flies underneath pwer transmissin lines and cable car wiring. -> The indicatr updates every secnd. Indicatr Mute-mde Independent frm the actual peratin mde a temprary indicatr and buzzer mute-mde can be chsen: After a duble click FLARM suppresses fr a 5-minute perid all visual and acustic traffic, fixed-bstacle and threat infrmatin. The suppressin is cnfirmed with a decreasing sund sequence. With an additinal duble click this suppressin- functin is immediately terminated and recnfirmed by an increasing sund sequence. The Mute-mde can interrupt frequent alarming by thermal circling with several aircraft but can n lnger give a warning in the case f the actual threat! Fr safety reasns the Mute-mde is autmatically canceled after the 5-minute perid this is cnfirmed by the increasing sund sequence. Page 16
Maintenance The V3+ display itself is maintenance-free, hwever it is recmmended t perfrm the fllwing checks, if prblems are suspected and/r general maintenance check-ups are planned: D all LED s illuminate during the start-up test? Des the Mde buttn functin crrectly; dirt/dust particles can bstruct its functin? Is the buzzer pening (display lwer edge) free frm dirt r adhesive residues? Are all 4 levels by vlume adjustment (shrt push, < 0.8 s) audible? D nt frget the FLARM TM mainframe during the same check-up: Is the sftware & fixed-bstacle database up-t-date? Are the antennas undamaged and prperly installed? Are the cables/plugs undamaged and prperly installed? Sftware Update The V3+M display is equipped with a bt-lader this allws updating f integrated display sftware. Shuld FLARM TM make changes/additins n current data cmmunicatin r adjustments t the perating/indicatin f different warning levels, the display sftware can be updated. Only in exceptinal cases is the update f the display cnsequent t a FLARM TM update mandatry. As a rule FLARM TM updates are cmpatible with current peripheral devices but can include new functins and peratins. Further infrmatin regarding updates is lcated n: Updated display sftware is fund n ur web-site: Included n website are steps fr sftware updates fr the display.
