5 DEH Rev. 2 SECTION 1. GENERAL INFORMATION OVERVIEW The Arc Vault Prtectin System is a breakthrugh arc fault prtectin technlgy that can stp an arcing fault in less than eight millisecnds (ms) t prvide increased arc flash hazard mitigatin with equipment drs pen r clsed. This fast arcing fault cntainment technlgy can help reduce the severity f wrk-related injuries and lst prductivity. The Arc Vault Prtectin System features an activatin switch (ACT) that can be used during rutine maintenance t put the lw-vltage equipment int a high-prtectin mde. When an arc flash event ccurs, the system will send a signal t the arc cntainment device. The arc is then diverted t the cntainment system in less than ne-half cycle r eight millisecnds depending n fault cnditins. At the same time the decisin t divert the arc is made, the system will als send a signal t pen an upstream circuit breaker. This will turn ff the system in apprximately 3 cycles t 5 cycles depending n the type and speed f the circuit breaker used, at which pint the arc in the cntainment system will terminate The Arc Vault Prtectin System can be retrfitted nt bth GE and nn-ge lw vltage switchbards, switchgear and mtr cntrl centers t expand its applicatin fr mst existing facilities. Depending n site cnditins, the design enables a retrfit installatin t be cmpleted within as little as a day f utage. The GE Arc Vault Prtectin System can be retrfit withut having t replace the existing lw vltage equipment lineup. The GE Arc Vault Prtectin System will cntain an arc fault in less than 8ms, resulting in incident energy in accrdance with IEEE 1584 at 18 frm the arc event at less than 1.2 Cal/cm 2, with the circuit breaker cmpartment drs pen, in a 480V 65kAIC system. The GE Arc Vault Prtectin System reduces building cnstructin csts because it des nt require exhaust chimneys r plenums t direct the arc flash energy utside f the building, when cmpared t traditinal arc resistant switchgear. Additinally, if an arc flash incident ccurs during maintenance, the lw-vltage switchgear can be peratinal again within a wrking day assuming apprpriate replacement parts are available, which Arc Vault General Infrmatin imprves yur verall system uptime when cmpared t traditinal arc-resistant switchgear. The GE Arc Vault prtectin system reduces the energy flwing thrugh the system by abut 60% r mre cmpared t a blted fault that wuld ccur with a crwbar system. The energy reductin will lwer the stress n ther system cmpnents such as transfrmers, circuit breakers, and bus bar cnstructin and imprve yur verall system uptime when cmpared t traditinal arc resistant switchgear. The GE Arc Vault Prtectin System will prtect the transfrmer transitin sectin and the lw-vltage lineup in a system that cntains an upstream cntrllable device n the transfrmer primary circuit. In a system where a primary cntrllable device des nt exist, the GE Arc Vault Prtectin System can prvide prtectin t the lw vltage equipment dwnstream by cntrlling the secndary main in the substatin (refer t Figure 6-3 and Figure 6-4). PRODUCT CONFIGURATION The Arc Vault Prtectin System detects the presence f a high magnitude arcing fault via a set f current and ptential transfrmers. Cntrl electrnics and pwer circuits create a lw impedance three phase arc inside a cntainment vessel (Arc Vault Device) within a predefined respnse curve (See Figure 6-2 arcing fault transfer. The cntained, lw impedance arc diverts fault current energy int the vessel until an upstream breaker, signaled by the Arc Vault Prtectin System, pens the circuit. The Arc Vault Prtectin System mnitrs the status f its cmpnents and prvides visual and cntact clsure infrmatin f its status. The Arc Vault Prtectin System includes the fllwing majr subsystems (shwn in Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-3): Lw Vltage AKD-20 Arc Vault Stack Arc Vault Device Arc Vault Relay 2012 General Electric All Rights Reserved 1

28 DEH Rev. 2 SECTION 6. APPLICATION DATA OVERVIEW The Arc Vault Prtectin System is used t sense and arcing fault and transfer energy away frm the fault int its wn arc cntainment chamber within a few millisecnds t minimize the incident thermal arc flash energy available t the riginal arcing fault. Simultaneusly the system will trip a line side circuit breaker t interrupt current int the system. It is recmmended that the GE Arc Vault Prtectin System nly be installed in cnsultatin with a qualified pwer system engineer familiar with Arc Flash Incident energy calculatins and a qualified electrical safety prfessinal familiar with the system, the Arc Vault Prtectin System and the intended use f the system. The Incident Energy available during arcing fault cnditins n a system prtected by a GE Arc Vault Prtectin System may be calculated by qualified persnnel in accrdance with the IEEE 1584 guide and the Time Current Curve fr the Arc Vault Prtectin System (AV TCC), when applied as fllws. Arc Vault Applicatin Data When a remte Arc Vault Stack is used t prtect an existing switchgear lineup, the cnnecting primary cable r bus length may nt exceed 50 linear feet when using 2000A cpper cables assuming a minimum f (6) 500MCM cables per phase. Cnduit must be nnmagnetic. The Arc Vault Prtectin System limits the maximum incident energy by transferring the system s energy int its arc cntainment chamber. When implemented within its applicatin rating (22-65kA & 480VAC nminal) the Arc Vault Prtectin System shuld limit arcing time within 8 ms resulting in incident energy, calculated per IEEE 1584, f less than 1.2 calries, at 18 and fr arcing gaps f 25 mm r larger General Electric All Rights Reserved 24

30 DEH Rev. 2 Arc Vault Applicatin Data The AV-TCC is derived frm the curve shwn in Figure 6-2. This figure represents the arcing time fr tests dne at 480V with a 25mm arcing gap at the fault initiatin pint. Tests were dne at varius available fault currents (Ibf) ranging frm 10kA t 65kA. The arc was initiated in an pen bx sized at 20x20x20 r smaller. The AV-TCC applies nly t systems able t deliver 22kA r higher Ibf. The tw diagnal lines are the cnstant energy lines fr 1.2 calries at 18 with a 25mm electrde gap: the blue upper line is fr a 480/277V grunded system, the red lwer line is fr a 480V flating r high resistance grunded system. The hrizntal dtted upper lines represent the typical clearing range fr a lw vltage pwer circuit breaker, cycles at 60Hz. System cnditins Full pst arc initiatin time frm 22kA t 65kA Ibf, based n a 25mm gap is 7 millisecnds. Nminal 480V. Larger arcing gaps shuld result in equal r faster times. Timing applies t systems with a nminal 480V. Lwer r higher vltage may result in slightly different timing with n significant effect n incident energy. Timing applies t slidly grunded, resistance grunded r flating systems at 480V. Timing is based n transfer frm an pen bx. Times frm a fully enclsed bx may vary. Available fault current at the prtected bus may be as lw as 14kA, but minimum 22kA at the bus where the Arc Vault is cnnected. Pickup settings Operatin f the Arc Vault is based n its wn arcing gap and the gap at the riginal fault arc pint. Tests were dne with a 25mm gap at the riginal arcing fault initiatin pint. Times fr fault gaps with larger gaps will be equal r faster than indicated in Arc Vault TCC. The system requires three 5000/5A CTs f relaying class C50 r better. Settings may be adjusted frm 80% t 300% f CT rating in 20% increments. The setting has a +10% reading tlerance (i.e., 9%, +11% f nminal pickup setting shwn n TCC). 85% expected arcing current MUST be higher than the maximum tlerance fr the selected pickup setting f the Arc Vault sensing system. The arcing gap at the riginal arcing fault pint determines the fault arcing current which drives the Arc Vault s sensing system. It is imprtant t set the arc vault sensing threshld belw the minimum expected 2012 General Electric All Rights Reserved 26

31 Arc Vault DEH Rev. 2 Applicatin Data arcing fault current, accunting fr all device and system tlerances, t be prtected against. It is suggested the pickup setting be as lw as practical fr expected inrush current. Arc Flash incident energy The Arc Vault TCC may be used in Arc Flash calculatins n all 480V, slidly grunded, impedance grunded, r flating, systems expected t deliver 22kA t 65kA blted fault current at the pint where the arc vault is cnnected. If available fault current is lwer than 22kA, but higher than 10kA the Arc Vault will still functin but a few additinal millisecnds may be required fr full transfer. The TCC is nt accurate in that range, but less than 1.2 calries per square cm is still expected at 18. Cnnectin and requirements The Arc Vault Prtectin System must be cnnected with (6)-500MCM cpper cable using nn-magnetic duct. Cable length may be up t 50 feet (15 meters). The Arc Vault Prtectin System uses 24VDC prvided by an internal pwer supply. The pwer supply requires cntrl pwer in the V AC r DC range. Fr reliability pwer may be prvided frm multiple separately derived systems as lng as the thrw-ver is rated t perate in 300ms r less The 5000A CTs may be cnnected up t 150 cable feet away (300 lp) frm the Arc Vault Relay using 12 AWG r lwer wire. Arc Vault Primary cnnectin: The Arc Vault retrfit stack is equipped with cable tap-ffs and lugs at the rear f the gear, sized t accmmdate the required (6) 500 MCM cables (per phase). Switchgear Main Bus Tap-ff pint: The Arc Vault retrfit stack must be cnnected t the intended equipment lineup directly belw the upstream cntrllable device (MV/LV breaker) that it is intended t trip. The Arc Vault Prtectin System will prvide a prtectin zne nly belw the main bus tap-ff pint. (Main bus cable tap-ffs nt prvided.) Line side discnnect device selectin and cntrl In active mde, Arc Vault Prtectin System will sense current and immediately perate a designated line side circuit breaker t initiate fault current interruptin. If the sensed vltage exceeds the factry set threshld then it will als initiate an energy transfer. A vltage belw the threshld indicates a cllapsed system r a blted fault cnditin and the Arc Vault Relay will nt be signaled t transfer energy. The line side device (upstream) may be a lw vltage main r a medium vltage primary main fr a transfrmer. Cntrl pwer t perate the shunt trip, capacitr trip r ther trip mechanism must be supplied by the installer. Back up. The installer may, at his ptin, install additinal vercurrent cntrl r transfer tripping with current sensing, delay r circuit breaker peratin lgic t perate anther circuit breaker further upstream. The cntrlled circuit breaker used t interrupt current t the GE Arc Vault Prtectin System must be maintained per the manufacturer s recmmendatins and ensured t be in prper wrking rder at all times. Prtectin Methdlgy The Arc Vault Prtectin System wrks by sensing current and vltage. Current abve the user set threshld causes the Arc Vault Prtectin system t pen the cntrlled circuit breaker. If the system simultaneusly senses sufficient vltage t indicate that the high current is caused by an arcing fault then the Arc Vault absrptin is triggered t transfer the energy away frm the arcing fault. Mdern trip systems such as the EntelliGuard TU electrnic trip may als be prvided with a temprary instantaneus setting called RELT (Reduced Energy Let- Thrugh) fr GE, Maintenance Switch by ther manufacturers. This trip capability may be used as redundant back up prtectin fr cntrl f the circuit breaker. Figure 6-3 is a simplified ne line f the cntrl system cntrlling a lw vltage substatin main circuit breaker. A similar system can be used t cntrl a medium vltage circuit breaker n the transfrmer s primary. When cntrlling a Medium vltage main the Arc Vault must be cnnected t the bus at the transfrmer secndary n the line side f the secndary main. The Arc Vault shuld nt be cnnected in such a manner that it cannt be discnnected frm the surce while the faulted bus remains cnnected t any surce. Any circuit breaker that separates the Arc Vault frm the surce prviding fault current must als discnnect the surce frm the fault. In In Figure 6-3 the Arc Vault cntrls the secndary main. Figure 6-4 shws an implementatin cntrlling the primary main. Figure 6-5 implementatin is incrrect because the cntrlled circuit breaker can discnnect the faulted bus but the arc vault remains cnnected. 40 DEH Rev. 2 SECTION 9. QUICK SPECIFICATION GUIDE AND INSTALLATION SPECIFICATION CLAIMS The GE Arc Vault Prtectin System will transfer energy in 8 millisecnds r less when applied within recmmended guidelines. Incident Arc Flash energy at the arcing fault pint will be reduced belw 1.2 calries at 18 wrking distance based n IEEE calculatins, resulting in incident energy in accrdance with IEEE 1584 at 18 frm the arc event at less than 1.2 Cal/cm 2, with the circuit breaker cmpartment drs pen, in a 480V 65kAIC system. The GE Arc Vault Prtectin System fr lw vltage equipment reduces building cnstructin csts because it des nt require exhaust chimneys r plenums t direct the arc flash energy utside f the building, when cmpared t traditinal arc resistant switchgear. If an arc flash incident ccurs during maintenance at the prtected switchgear, the lw-vltage switchgear can be peratinal again within a wrking day assuming apprpriate replacement parts are available, which imprves yur verall system uptime when cmpared t traditinal arc resistant switchgear.
