1 April 2017 Merrimack Valley Quilting Guild Celebrating 37 years of encouraging the art of quilting in the Merrimack Valley. MVQ was established in PR ES I D ENT S MES S AG E It s time to shed a few layers and enjoy the spring weather. This time of year, usually inspires me to make a tulip block or applique something with flowers, but this year is different. I m thinking about water and soft cool water colors. Water reflections, the theme of our quilt show, is on my mind. I hope you re working on something for the show in September. I think many of you are and I can t wait to see what you are creating! EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE President: Ann Hockmeyer Vice President Liz Swan Secretary: Bev Valle Treasurer AP: Elaine Rando Treasurer AR: Marianne Karp Plans for the quilt show are progressing very nicely and we ve added a new category this year, it s modern! The definition for the category is on the registration form. We re also working on some improvements and changes for the penny raffle baskets. Kim Blanchard, who s chairing this committee, has some terrific new ideas. See her for the basket information. A new basket in the making is American Girl! (Thank you, Carrie!) Please make an outfit or accessory if you can and give it to me or Kim. We also need fat quarters and lottery tickets. We are looking for places to display our beautiful raffle quilt and sell tickets this summer. If you know of an event where we can bring it please let Judy Naylor or Betty Hastings know. We will be displaying the raffle quilt at the Amesbury Days Art Show on June 23 & 24. I m looking for small quilts, such as those from last year s basket challenge and small landscape quilts, to display in Amesbury city hall along with the raffle quilt. Please contact me if you would like to be a part of the exhibit. We also need two volunteers to help hang the quilts on Friday (23) morning. The charity quilts are due in May and I hope we have lots of them for the children of Kulea. Our guild is growing! We have so many new members this year. Be sure to say Hi! and sit with someone new, you ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to make a new quilty friend! Our speaker this month is Marious Carter of Marious Designs. She will be showing us some great examples of her take on color and design along with visual piecing. There s also some openings in her workshop on Saturday. 4 Our May 18th program is Becky Goldsmith. We will be We will be in a different space at NECCO due to their Ronni is asking for help: sharing costs with Cocheco Guild in Dover, NH. graduation activities. I will need helpers to drive around and entertain Becky during her stay with us. Gail Wozniak has volunteered to help out as much as she can (thank you Gail) but I'm sure more will be needed as some of us need to work around our work schedules.. Cocheco Quilt Guild will take care of the first part of her journey and we will pick it up from there. Heres' what I will need: Thursday, 5/18/17 - pick Becky up at her hotel in Dover and bring her to her hotel near us (TBD) Take her out to lunch and maybe a quilt shop or two in the afternoon - whatever Becky would like to do Have dinner with her and bring her and her trunk show to NECC for the meeting Return her and her trunk show to her hotel after the meeting A volunteer or two is needed to help out with Becky Goldsmith on Thursday, May 18th. It would be nice if someone could entertain her for the afternoon - maybe go the Quilt museum - take her out to dinner - and then bring her to the Guild meeting. All other times have been covered. A big thank you to our wonderful members for stepping up to help out. Please let Ronni know if you can help! DID YOU MAKE A TOTE WITH MARIANNE AND LAYNE? Bring it to Show and Tell! Backyard Birds May 20th The 12" x 12 finished size block pattern is provided in class. Fabric I recommend that you pre-wash all fabric before class. Block background fabric: 1 square 14'' x 14'' Applique fabrics: A variety of large scraps in colors suitable for the block. Additional Supplies Small paper scissors Small fabric scissors One 12" x 12 square of medium weight clear upholstery vinyl. Keep any tissue paper that came with the vinyl. An ultra fine point Sharpie marker in black 2 sheets of Essential Laminate at pieceocake.com OR look for clear, heavy weight, single-sided, self-adhesive laminate at an office supply store. I will supply you with a needle and a toothpick. Applique pins. I recommend short pins. I will have Superior Masterpiece 100% cotton thread for you to sew with in class. General s charcoal pencil in white. A Sewline or similar gray 9mm mechanical pencil for light fabrics A sandpaper board or a sheet of fine grain sandpaper. A baggie for your templates A light and an extension cord in case the room is dark. Note that you may not be able to use this in some classrooms. Many people find that applique is easier if they have a Lap App or pillow in their lap to rest their

5 A Slice of Freedom Workshop April 22 Have some serious fun as you embark on the intriguing tour of cutting free hand curves and 'visual piecing'. You will be amazed at how easy it is and how fluid your designing becomes! This is a two part workshop. Morning - technique/design time as you create a unique wall hanging while learning the visual piecing technique and becoming comfortable with cutting curves free hand. *You will spend playing with the visual piecing technique and implementing the free hand cutting of curves and making something that is unique to YOU. *Bring fabric from your stash that all work well together - think value, texture, and color and some that POP. 2 1/2 wide strips, 10 squares, 6-8 fat quarters or more 2-3 fat quarters (or larger) of fabrics that pop /contrast with your stash. 3/4 yard fabric that can be used as a background if that is the way your design develops. Remember THE MORE FABRIC YOU BRING THE MORE FUN YOU WILL HAVE!!! The Afternoon - work on the pattern Glimmerglass as we dial up our free hand cutting of curves. *Fabric as stated for the size quilt you want to make. *You will not finish your quilt top during this workshop, but you should have numerous blocks completed and the enthusiasm and skill to finish the project at home. Supply List *Sewing Machine in good working order. * Sewing machine manual * 80/12 machine needles * 1/4 foot or a way that works for you to sew an accurate 1/4 seam. *Rotary cutter with new blade * 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 square ruler *Cutting Mat *Fabric as stated for the morning * Fabric as stated for the pattern MARLOUS CARTER * Stiletto, scissors, seam ripper, pins, scissors *Thread for piecing Workshop- June 17th Workshop Openings still available The New Big Leaf This large graphic leaf, made using freezer paper to form the design templates, can be made as the final 24 x 24 piece, or combined with additional blocks to make a stunning quilt. Materials Basic sewing supplies, rotary cutter, pins, scissors, sewing machine with regular foot (not a ¼ foot).seam ripper, ruler, etc. This is a great quilt for using your accumulated scraps. Use small amounts (1/4 yards are great) of fabrics in a range of colors that go from light to dark. Please don t bring whole yards or large amounts! Batiks, solids, or textures work well, smaller scale commercial prints are fine, too. Hand-dyes are wonderful to use, as well as wild graphics. Add small amounts (1/8 yard or so) of neon or bright fabric like lime green or fuchsia if you have it on hand. 7 Merrimack Valley Quilt Guild General Meeting Minutes, March 16, 2017 Sew and Know presentation by Liz Swan, Fabric placement and the disappearing 9 patch. Thanks, Liz, for a great demonstration! President, Ann Hockmeyer called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. The UFO Auction, held in February, made over $2150. Congratulations to the team who put this together: Minda Fowler as chair, Bev Valle as the auctioneer, and the many helpers who sorted all the items donated. Thanks, everyone! Announcements It is difficult getting meeting places on the dates we need them. The Quilt show meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, 6 8 PM at the Georgetown Library. The Board meeting is usually the 1 st Wednesday of the month, changed to Tuesday, April 4, 7-9 PM at the Plaistow Library. See Liz if you have a place where we can meet. The travel Raffle Quilt is going to MQX in Manchester, NH at the Radisson Hotel, April 6-8. Please sign up to sit with the quilt. Liz Swan The new travel raffle quilt blocks are due today. The quilt is being sewn together on 3/17. At the Seabreeze quilt guild, Beth Helfer is lecturing April 11, 7 PM. The workshop is the next day, from 1 to 4 PM. See Liz if you are interested. $30 to Liz for the workshop. Ronni Longwell There will be no open sew this weekend. April workshop is at West Church in Haverhill on Route 97. May workshop is at the Plaistow Library. June workshop is at the West Church in Haverhill. Information will be on the blog. Next year s program is booked.
