The New Year means that there are a lot of guild happenings to prepare for. It s time to buckle down and finish our quilts for the quilt show. The quilt show committee is meeting on the 12 th to finalize the plans for our biggest event of the year, which is only a few months away, and volunteers are needed. There s also still time to sign up for a workshop. This month s workshop on the 17 th with Amy Friend has openings and you probably have enough fabric in your stash to make the table runner offered. Her style leans toward modern but the technique is paper piecing and it s a great opportunity to expand or perfect your technique. Another great guild happening is the UFO auction held at the February meeting. Please remember to bring items to this month s meeting to donate to this fun and entertaining auction. Wait! There s more! We have a charity quilt sew in on the 31 st. Come help sew the toilet paper fabric rolls together! Go to the blog for all the details about these events. Before Amy heads off to teach at A Quilter s Gathering she ll be here utilizing fabric die cutting with Sizzix and teaching us to show our Modern side. Project: Melon Ice - a table topper or small quilt. $30

Signe Kaleel and I are accepting donations for the UFO Auction that will be happening at the February meeting. So clean out your everything and bring it all to the January meeting with one exception: only 100% cotton quilting fabric, crazy quilting fabric and wool please. (All other types of fabric could be donated to the White Elephant Table at our quilt show.) If you can t make the meeting, contact Signe or I and we can arrange for drop off. P.S. Speak to Betty Hastings or Mary Jo Ray Raffle Quilt The fall colored batik Raffle Quilt Blocks are due by the January meeting. Please finish them up and return them when you come to the January 15th meeting. There are several blocks out there that need to be returned. If you can not bring them to the meeting, please send them with a friend, or mail them to Bev Valle by that date. Some may not have the right amount of fabric. That's not a problem...send them back for our committee to finish! Thank you all so much for helping us complete this gorgeous quilt! UFO Challenge entries and payment are due by the Jan meeting. The finished UFO items must be seen by the May meeting and the prize will be raffled off at the June meeting. 4 Held every year at the end of NH school vacation- Friday and Saturday- May 1st and 2nd at Timberlane Jr High in Plaistow Quilt judging is usually done at Merrimac Library on a Wed, Carrie Zizza is coordinating. Quilt drop-off and show set-up is Thursday,May 1st at the School. Come early as the show is also hung that day. Members are required to give 2 hours of volunteer time either before or during show. Many opportunities abound! Sign sheets are on the back table. Quilt entry forms [found on blog] are to be sent in before March 31st. You can choose to have your quilt judged by a certified judge- $3:00 per quilt. Great chance to learn from a professional! Challenge Quilts: Janice Jones is chair- make a quilt related to the Theme- Red, White and Blue- A hatchet block must be included somewhere. separately judged according to specific criteria- info on blog Quilt Show ads: Members can gather an ad from a business for our booklet - can be any type of business, not just quilt related. Letter is on blog with info you will need. Publicity: Take a few bookmarks or posters- give to friends or hang in public places in your tow.- Available on back table during meetings. Penny Raffle Table: members donate a basket, bucket, tray etc filled with new items- either quilt related or not [tea, chocolate, gardening, teddy bear etc.] Kathy Pearse is coordinating. Silent Auction: Members donate a handmade article to be auctioned off during the show. 50% of proceeds goes to maker and 50% goes to Guild fund for a new loud speaker system. White Elephant: members bring in fabric [no upholstery], patterns, buttons, lace, unwanted tools or unfinished quilts- 100% of proceeds to the guild. Kitchen: Volunteers are needed to man bake cookies to sell- donate bottled water and Diet Soda to sell. Deb Zukas is chair. Boutique: An opportunity for members to sell homemade articles,pins, bags, knit items, [quilts do not really sell], tools, books, patterns that are in excellent condition. 20% goes to guild- maker gets 80%. 5 Red, White and Blue and Celebrating 35 Years of MVQ! May 1st and 2nd The quilt show registration forms are now updated and on line under quilt show/forms. Fill them out and send along any time to Layne Rando. We are still seeking a co-chair for the Penny Raffle now that Gail D Arrigo has moved away and cannot help with this. Please step forward great way to meet new people. We are looking for more ads to help pay for our quilt show booklet know any vendor who might place an ad your hairdresser, insurance man, corner variety etc please see the form on the blog or see Gail or Helen Gail Wozniak or Helen Weymouth with any questions. We Are looking for a dress form to borrow. Our Special Exhibit this year is based on our Patriotic Theme- So, if you have a red, white and blue quilt or another that fits the theme, please fill out a form for that as well. Toilet paper roll sew in. Saturday January 31 9am plaistow library. Come for a little - come for a lot. If you come to January meeting sign up for what aspect you could do - bring machine and sew, be a cutter or presser. Be sure and check you stash for fabric we could use - bring to jan meeting - border fabrics, sashing fabrics, backing etc. think what would go with scrap quilts. At least one yard pieces or more.

6 January 17th JANUARY WORKSHOP: The material list for the January workshop with Amy Friend has been posted on the blog under the workshop tab. Please note there are only three pages as Amy will supply the foundation pattern page and copies in class. NOTE: you will need to ROTARY cut your fabric in preparation for the class project. Amy will bring her Sizzix machine and dies to the workshop for anyone who would like to try this system. She will supply details at our meeting on the dies and how your material should best be prepared for efficiency of time and use of the machine. Spend the day with award winning appliqué quilters who will share their secrets for winning the ribbons. Techniques will include: reverse, several freezer paper variations, machine, baste or not & working with wool. Try them all, find your favorite. Project: Fruit blocks $ Lecture: Journeys Time travel with several MVQ quilters & their quilts. Workshop: Scrap Queen Unleashed! Our own Signe Kaleel will be making us use our scraps & tame them all into submission, atleast in theory. Join Signe as she teaches us how to make beautiful scrap quilts utilizing several techniques including just going at it. Fuggly, crummie, fractured, stringy or playful.plan to use your scraps & maybe even your friends scraps. Totally addicting!! $ Joe Cunningham, San Francisco CA. Gladi is an appliqué & traditional quilter who is using her free time to create lovely, intricate & award winning quilts. Her wonderful use of color, design sense & her detailed workmanship bring traditional to a new & contemporary timelessness. BOOK SWAP: Literary type or GUILTY Summer reading. 9 Merrimack Valley Quilters Holiday Meeting December 4, P.M. 60 members and 1 guest were present Ann Hockmeyer, President called the meeting to order after we shared a wonderful potluck dinner. She especially thanked Jane Hamel and her helpers for setting up such a cheerful holiday party. Raffle Quilt Creation: Bev Valle asked that all blocks and unused fabrics be returned by the end of the Jan. meeting. Mystery Bus Trip: Gail Wozniak announced that the Mystery Bus Trip will be Sat. Mar. 14 th, Quilt Show 2015: The next Q.S. meeting will be Mon. Jan. 12 th, at 7 P.M., at the Plaistow Library. U.F.O. Auction: Carrie Zizza and Signe Kaleel are seeking donations of incomplete quilts, orphan blocks, notions, books, yarn, machines, and gift certificates for services, or store credit, at the January meeting, for the February Auction. Programs: Lyn Grenier and Maddie Burke spoke about next year s workshops. A table -runner based in the Modern Quilt Movement is planned for the Jan. 17 th workshop with Amy Friend. Photos and Materials Lists are available on our website. Lyn stressed that more people need to sign-up for workshops or some of them may have to be cancelled. Raffle Quilt Travel: Completed raffle ticket stubs should be put in the box at the front table. Charity T. P. Rolls: Gail Wozniak announced a charity sew-in, to make quilts out of those rolls of fabric strips, on Sat. Jan. 31, starting at 9 A.M. at the Plaistow Library. Door Prizes: Liz Swan asks that each of us donate Fat Quarters at every meeting, to be used for door prizes. This month s prizes were won by Susan Sisson, Helen Weymouth, Jeanne Elliot, and Jan Taylor. Monthly Raffle: won by Krista Rose Show and Tell: Many impressive workshops projects, holiday gifts, and holiday quilts were displayed. Presents, did we get presents! We shared two different gift swaps; one of handmade gifts, and one of favorite sewing notions. There were also numerous gifts -- including the festive table decorations -- from Jane Hamel s Party Committee. Jane also collected donations for the St. Luke s Food Pantry. Next General Meeting: Thurs. Jan. 15, 2015 at 7 P.M., doors open at 6 P.M. for set-up and socializing. Next Board Meeting: Wed. Jan. 7, 2015, at 7 P.M., at the Plaistow Library

10 Many of our members have small businesses some are quilt related and some are not. The newsletter will print your add for FREE. Just send a copy to pat.lucey@verizon.net and I will put it in. This is an excellent way to promote your own business to members of our Guild. Other ways to use this Newsletter: Recommend a business to other members. Sell an item you no longer use. Recommend a product that you love! Send a suggestion that might help to make this guild even better than it is.
