June 2018 Merrimack Valley Quilting Guild Celebrating 38 years of encouraging the art of quilting in the Merrimack Valley. MVQ was established in PR ES I D ENT S MES S AG E Happy June, everyone! EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE President: Liz Swan Vice President Mary Wilkes Secretary: Kim Blanchard Treasurer AP: Gail Forthoffer Treasurer AR: Heather Sheilds It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. It feels like yesterday that I stood before the guild as a newly elected President to speak for the first time. I was so nervous! All of you made me feel good about what I had to say as the year went on. Now I still get nervous, but no so much. During the summer the Quilt Show Committee will be hard at work getting the show in shape. Many volunteers are needed to make it a success. Every member is required to volunteer at least two hours of their time, in some capacity, to the show. Please see Linda Lydecker at the June Guild meeting to sign up. The deadlines to enter a quilt in the show and advertise in the booklet are quickly approaching. Make sure you submit your forms and fees. Mary Wilkes will have more information at the meeting. Also, June 30 th is the deadline to renew your membership. Bev Valle and Mary Kendall will be collecting your signed applications and dues at the meeting. If you are paying by cash, please bring the exact amount. The Programs Committee is planning a field trip to the New England Quilt Museum this summer. Sue Spinelli will have more information for us at the meeting. The Travel Raffle Quilt Committee is looking for volunteers to sit with the current raffle quilt. Please see Betty Hastings and Judy Naylor to fill a spot. Finally, we are still looking for that special someone to head the Programs Committee for fiscal year Ronnie Longwell has been the committee chair for several years and has earned a rest. And, we still need someone to chair next years UFO auction. This is one of our biggest fund raisers, so please consider volunteering. Anyone interested in either position can talk to any member of the Executive Board. I wish you all a very pleasant summer with time to enjoy nature and make quilts! Elizabeth Swan, President To reach any committee, please address correspondence to MVQ Guild PO Box 566 Haverhill. MA Newsletter items must be in to me by the 1st of each month: Pat.lucey@verizon.net June 21st RaNae Merrill, who should be fascinating. She visits us from Manhattan and is an artist in every sense of the word, including concert pianist. She is renowned for her spiral quilts and her lecture will be on Magnificent Spiral Mandala Quilts. Her latest book and passion is free motion mastery and the book is available to look at on the programs table.

We need donations of printed cotton fabric that is red and white for the next raffle quilt. We can use yardage or scraps but nothing smaller than 4 square. The fabric pattern cannot include any other colors. We re making a Grandmother s Flower Garden quilt and our selective and fussy choice of fabrics will make it spectacular! Please don t wash the fabric, I will wash and treat all of the fabric to insure that the red dye is set. Please bring your fabric to the meeting on the 21st! Thank you, Ann Hockmeyer Hi, I am an art quilter from Dover, NH and a Cocheco Quilt Guild Member. We have two quilting sessions on Star Island in September for a 4 day or 5 day getaway on the Isle of Shoals off the coast near Portsmouth. More information is available at starisland.org or by contacting me. Dates are 9/4-9/7 or 9/10-9/14. Thank you. Jaci Lawson artquiltblog.wordpress.com

At the June meeting there will be two raffle baskets for viewing. We encourage small groups of people to work together to make a basket and reduce the cost, it does not have to be sewing related. Please give it a title make it a movie night theme, or a mens sport theme, spa/feel good theme, anything you think would be enjoyable. They can be small, medium, or large. Wrap the basket in tulle or cellophane to keep the contents in tact during its transportation to the show, and make a label that is secured to the basket. I have available seven battings from small to large that a group could put into their basket, please see me at our meeting. Beverly Knapp Red and White Quilts Now not to be confused with Ann Hockmeyer We are talking about the 40th Anniversary raffle quilt - keep in mind making a red and white quilt of your own for our red/white display at 2020 quilt show. So a little over two years to get your ideas flowing, start your quilt and let s see a HUGE display. Remember only red and white fabrics, no other colors, and any size from mini to bed size Stumped for ideas - just google red and white quilts on Pinterest and you ll get lots of inspiration. Holiday Party Update Stay tuned at the June meeting for info on making something for a swap at our December holiday party. Get it done over the summer and you can check that off your to-do list!

Yankee Homecoming Craft day in Newburyport is July 31st. Liz Swan and hubby, John, have volunteered to set up (and take down) our quilt/tent/table/display. We need volunteers to sit with the quilt during the day. Please contact Betty or Judy. Reminder! All dues for renewing members are due by June 30th as part of the By-Laws to have a quilt in the show. If you have not mailed in your dues yet, please do so as any application postmarked by June 15th will go into the raffle for a free membership! There will aslo be an opportunity to hand in your application at the June 19th meeting as well. If you are paying at the meeting, you will not be eligible for the free membership raffle. If paying with cash, please have the exact money owed as it hard to make change. $30 for senior membership (65 and over), $35 for regular membership. Thanks to all of those who have already paid their dues for !!! Quilt Show Adverstising Attention all members! If you have or know of someone with a business (it doesn't have to be quilt related) that you think might want to place an ad, please contact them. The ad form is available on our mvquilters.org website under the 2018 Quilt Show tab, quilt show forms. All ad copy and payments are due by August 1, 2018!!! Here are some reminders: Your membership application along with dues needs to be paid by June 30th. If you are entering a quilt in the show your form needs to be submitted by July 15th. You must be a member in good standing to enter a quilt in the show. This means your membership is current and you have done 2 hours of volunteer time. If you haven't already done so sign up for 2 or more hours of volunteer time. Please get with Linda Lydecker. A sign up sheet will be available at our meeting. All information for the show booklet should be completed and sent to Layne Rando by August 1st. There is always a need for Silent Auction items and Raffle Baskets. Are you working on your challenge quilt? You need to fill out a form to enter your quilt. How about a workshop? Sign up sheets will be available at our meeting. Demonstration participants are always needed as well. See Jane Hamel. A sign up sheet for scissor sharpening will be available at this months meeting. I'd like to give Shaun an idea of how much work he has to look forward to. There is a lot of work ahead for the committee and a fantastic show to look forward to! 2018 Quilt Show Challenge This year s quilt show theme is STELLAR and our current raffle quilt is a storm at sea, done in an appropriate water themed colorway. I ve decided to tie the two ideas together to form the challenge. The challenge is to make a quilt 18 x 18 (size matters for display purposes) that reflects the emotion of the poem SEA FEVER. It can be an overall interpretation or one that represents just a single line from the poem. This beautiful poem has much symbolism and I think you will find it an interesting and fun one to work on. I will provide the poem analysis which explains it more clearly at the January meeting. The quilts are due on Thursday, September 27 th. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Minutes from the May 10, 2018 MVQ Meeting Call to Order Time 7:00 pm Presidents Announcements: President Swan asked if there were any corrections that needed to be made to the secretary report from the April 2018 meeting. One correction was noted that dues should be paid by June 30 th not June 31 st. Minutes were accepted with the correction. President Swan asked if there were any questions about the treasurer's report. There were no questions concerning the treasurers report it was accepted as circulated. There was no fabric raffle this month. The next board meeting is June 6 th at 7 pm at WCC The next quilt show meeting will be on June 13 th at 6:30 pm at WCC. Thank you to Stacy Caruso for volunteering to be our guild photographer. Still needed are: 2019/2020 programs chair (without a chair there is no programs). It takes a year to set up the following years program. Year 2018/2019 is set but someone is needed to start planning for 2019/2020. Our guild is known for it's programming making this a key position in the guild. In September the New England Quilt Museum will host a meet the teachers. This would be a good place to get speakers and teachers for our programs. UFO Auction (one month of collecting items & one day of sorting prior to the auction). This position will be moved to programs. Historian Please consider volunteering for one of these positions. Committee Announcements: Nominating: President Swan presented the nominating committee and the 2018/2019 board to the membership. A motion was made by Deb Kelso and seconded by Lynn Pisani to accept the slate of officers as posted in the newsletter. Motion passed. Programs: RaNae Merrill is our June presenter. On Friday her Spiral Mandala class will be held at the Georgetown Library from 10 to 4 on June 22. The Free Motion Quilting class will be held at NECC from 9:30 to 3:30 on June 23. Sue Spinelli is planning a summer outing to the New England Quilt Museum. More details will be given at the June meeting. Ronnie is looking for someone to do the guilds Christmas party. Raffle Quilt: Next years quilt will be red and white in keeping with our upcoming Ruby celebration. The pattern will be Grandmothers Garden which will include some English Paper Piecing. Following are the guidelines: No batiks or solids. Red and white fabric only. The smallest piece of fabric that will be accepted is a 4 inch square. Donations will be accepted at the June meeting. Please pre-wash your fabrics. Quilt Show: Ann answered questions about the Challenge Quilt. It is based on the poem Sea Fever. To assist the judge on how it relates to the poem please make note of it on your label or somewhere on your quilt. The design can be based on the feel of the poem, paragraph or a specific line(s). Check out the MVQ website for forms. Scissor sharpening will take place on Saturday, 9/29 from 10 till 2. A sign-up sheet will be placed in the lobby at our June meeting. I would like to give him an idea of how many he will be doing. Be thinking about which workshop you would like to do. Comfort Quilts: Please wash your baby quilts that young ones will be receiving. Membership: There were 75 members in attendance, 2 new members and 10 guests. Meeting adjourned at 9:09 pm. Respectfully submitted by Mary Wilkes, Vice President. 8 Program News June 2018 Thank you to Bonnie McCaffery for a wonderful trunk show and workshop. Her quilts are just beautiful and we had a great time painting faces in her workshop. That was her last painting faces workshop so I feel privileged that she chose to visit us! What a talented lady! And the photo shots I ve seen are beautiful. She is moving into photography as her newest passion so check out her website if you are interested! Our June speaker is RaNae Merrill, who should be fascinating. She visits us from Manhattan and is an artist in every sense o f the word, including concert pianist. She is renowned for her spiral quilts and her lecture will be on Magnificent Spiral Mandala Quilts. Her latest book and passion is free motion mastery and the book is available to look at on the programs table. Friday s workshop on the Magic Miirror Mandala Quilt will be from 10 to 4 at the Georgetown-Peabody Library. Betty Hastings is your host. Saturday s workshop on Free Motion Mastery will be from 9:30 to 3:30 in our usual NECCO location. Bev Vallee will be your host! Thank you Ladies! A big thank you to Gail Wozniak who has once again stepped up to host our Christmas party. I am so grateful for Gail s willingness to put in the time and effort so all of us can enjoy the evening and get into the holiday spirit. Can t wait to see what she has planned for us this year! Sign-ups are ongoing for the workshops at our Quilt Show. Beth Helfter of Eva Paige Quilt Designs will be teaching 3 workshops. On Friday, the Suite Life and Give it a Scrap Slap. On Saturday, Syncopated Ribbons. The cost is $30 for members and $40 for non-members and the fee includes admission to the Quilt Show. Stop by and sign up at the meeting. A summer trip is being planned to the New England Quilt Museum on Sunday, July 8 th, beginning at 10 with a private one hour tour with Curator Pam Weeks and then time to tour on our own hopefully Betty Hastings will be there to continue guiding us through. Sue Spinelli is coordinating this outing and there is more information from her in this newsletter. Hope you can join us! Thank you Sue! Sign-ups will begin this month for our October speaker, Sue Pelland of Sue Pelland Designs. Sue specializes in Rotary Cut Applique and her lecture is entitled Fast and Fabulous Rotary Cutter Applique With Leaves Galore Templates and her workshop is Hope s Diamond. It s a very fun class for all levels of quilters. Visit her website at suepellanddesigns.com to see her work. Two colorways are shown below and the supply list will be available at the meeting. Purchase of templates and other materials is optional as she is allowing us to share hers, but she will have them for sale at the meeting and the c lass. No sewing machine required. The cost online for rulers is about $55. There is no kit fee. Taming your Scraps Maggie will show one way to manage your scraps. Several quilts made from fabric leftover from other quilts will be shown. As a bonus, she'll show you how to use the Pythagorean Theorem to figure out setting triangles!

Member Carrie Zizza s class will be $10 for members and still $35 for non-members. Supplies and any kits required by the instructor are separate. Supply lists will be available at time of sign-up so please review them carefully to be sure it works for you. Some of our larger speakers require more extensive and expensive supplies so it is important that you plan ahead. Sign-up fees for the class are not refundable. It is encouraged that you visit the instructor s website to get a first-hand look at their work and classes. The kit fee will be listed on the sign-up sheet if one is requested. It is important for me to note (and this is the tough part) that I often have to give instructors class numbers

ahead of time they prepare the appropriate number of kits and bring the amount of other materials they need for the class. When members do not show up or cancel last minute, this affects not only the instructor, but also anyone who might have been on the waiting list. Please try to plan accordingly and it is totally understood that emergencies come up at times. But we do need to be considerate of what the instructor has planned for and all the work they have put in to teach the class, not to mention their fees to the Guild. Thank you all for that. Have a wonderful summer and hope to see you at the Museum outing! Looking forward to a big show and tell in the Fall. And don t forget those quilts of love you are making for our two special organizations! Can t wait to see what you amazing ladies do! Thank you, Ronni Longwell, Program Chair and Nancy Dempsey, Program Vice Ch All workshops are $25 for members and $35 for non-members.
